includes a “controller with a display screen” as well

Ok let's just say it's a new "light" version of the Wii U like they did for the Wii Mini...

Depends what you mean by "exclusive", is it exclusive to the Playstation AND only on NTSC-J version or games that exist on several platforms but only in NTSC-J version for the Playstation?

Hardware and Tech / Play NTSC-US games on a JP Dreamcast
« on: August 21, 2015, 12:29:47 pm »
So now I own a superb Dreamcast console and it's a NTSC-J model. Most of the games I want on this machine are JP but I'd like to collect a few US games. And I want to play the original games, not burnt copies..

From my understanding you can't play JP and US games on a EU console unless you modchip the console or use a boot CD like this:

And for US Dreamcast to play PAL and JP games you need either to modchip, either sue that one :

What about the JP console?
  • Does it even block the PAL and US games?
  • Do you also need a loader CD to play other regions's games?
  • If so can the US Gameshark CD do the job?

Extra: I see the GameShark thing has a kind of "dongle" bundled in some versions, is it required to boot games? Only the CD won't be enough?

If you have intel about "importing" on a JP Dreamcast, please share! ;D

-Phantasy Star Online 2 is coming to the PS4 in Japan some time in 2016.

SEGA trolling much?

I played this game on JP servers for like one year, that's a really good game and not releasing it in the West is simply a shame. The way the game works means the publisher would have needed a good team to produce a lot of community events content, which works wonder in Japan with the SEGA team but maybe they never found any competent western team to handle this or wouldn't take the financial risk after the crisis they went through...

Anyway i'm sure this could have been a big success and even with friends on the JP server with a patched game client, the language barrier was frustrating and not being part of the community events was kinda lame, that's why we finally stopped after a year.

You don't need a Japanese region PSN account in order to play physical copies of Japanese games you've purchased. This applies to both the PS3 and PS Vita. There's no issues with trophies either, the trophies will show up on your French account, like it does on my Canadian one.

However, DLC is where things change. You will need to have a Japanese account in order to redeem codes or purchase the DLC to use for Japanese games. In the case of the PS Vita, you will need to have another memory card if you want to make a Japanese region account for the DLC. It requires a couple more steps too, but I haven't set up a Japanese account for myself yet, so I can't properly explain the rest. I plan on creating one soon though, since I want to redeem the DLC codes I got for preordering IA/VT Colorful. There should be plenty of resources on YouTube to help you create your own Japanese account, particularly with the Vita.

Another thing to note is that for some strange reason, North American copies of the original Persona 4 Arena is region locked. There's also a Japanese game PS3 called Joysound Dive which released exclusively to the Japanese PSN. It too is region locked. Other than those two, any game from any region should be playable on your (I'm assuming European) PS3 and Vita consoles. :)

Thank you for taking the time to summarize this! Adding the game to my wishlist ;D

<game review>

If you like Japanese rhythm games and own a PS Vita, I very strongly recommend you import the game immediately. The game's producer has said in an interview that the game will likely never see a release in North America due to the difficult nature of dealing with the rights to use the music in the game. There's some English in the game's menus as well so it's very import friendly.

Thanks for the review abe!

I never imported games on PS3/PS-Vita, how does it work? Do you have to create a different PSN account and use a different memory card for the PSVita? Can you have the trophies on your main account? Can you buy the DLCs?

I see that PS3 and Vita games are "region free" but I wonder what's actually the deal about it.

Looks like you might get your wish. Ebay took down my listing because of "Copyright Violation." -Which is BS.

Amiibo functionality it pretty cool too. My Luigi Amiibo is level 50 now and it usually wins when I fight against it.

LV 50 amiibos are pure evil, they can easily kick your ass!

We like to play 3 humans picking on one amiibo LV50, It's not fair and kinda mean but a lot of fun since the little brat is quite a challenge to fall down even alone vs. 3.. Watching them fight each other and take bets can be pretty fun too :D

Classic Video Games / Re: The top 5 games that defined your childhood
« on: August 13, 2015, 11:27:48 am »
Playing those games now instantly brings strong nostalgia of my childhood. I was a SEGA person as you can guess:

1. Sonic the Hedgehog series - Master System / Mega Drive
2. Ecco series - Master System / Mega Drive
3. Alex Kidd in Miracle World - Master System
4. Story of Thor (aka Beyond Oasis) - Mega Drive
5. Dynamite Headdy - Mega Drive

Honorable mentions go to Secret of Mana, Super Metroid & Zelda III on Super Nintendo that strongly influenced me at this time and bring a lot of memories now, but I borrowed the console to play those so my playtime wasn't comparable with the SEGA titles above.

I remember also having a huge playtime on Landstalker, Soleil (aka Crusader of Centy), Strike series, Streets of Rage series and Shinobi series. I think I played Sonic games more than all the other combined though ! :P
