Classic Video Games / Re: Sega Genesis' SHMUPs
« on: May 28, 2015, 09:30:43 am »
Hellfire is an awesome horizontal SHMUP, also one that doesn't seemed to get mentioned all that much. Probably because of it difficulty it's one of the harder SHMUPS on the Genesis.

I don't understand the idea behind buying a flash cart, at all. If you're gonna go the emulation route, why not just download them for free?
A flash cart isn't emulation at all it just lets you load the games ROM file off of a SD card and has a interface to select between multiple ROMS. Whether the ROM is loaded onto the system from a SD card or from an original cartridges EPROM there's really is no difference.

What's there to disapprove of? I've seen others post pics of reproduction games. It's not like I'm divulging where I got em. ;)

Well other than the fact that you paid $120 for bootleg carts when you could've bought a flash cart for about the same price... those carts never, ever, ever get permission from the original game hackers.

Yes, we care. We care a whole lot.

I shouldn't be crapping on your finds and I'm sorry but they're a really sore point for me.
Who's to say that I don't already own a flash cart. By that same logic why would I spend money on any cartridge based game when I could just use a flash cart. I like having a dedicated cartridge copy. Spending $200 bucks on ebay for a game like Earthbound knowing that probably around 10-15 percent of them being sold on there are fakes anyway is not particularly appealing to me.

I didn't see any problem with the guy who posted his Secret of Mana 2 and his Chrono Triger repros last month. Or the myriad of others who have posted them before on this site. I don't see why this focus is on poor little thecrypticodor  :'(

Picked up some reproduction carts from the good people over in Shenzhen China.

Picked up some reproduction carts from the good people over in Shenzhen China. They were only $25-30 each shipping included which is a lot better than the $160-200 something original copies of Mega Man 7 and Earthbound are going for.

Tales of Phantasia and Seiken Densetsu 3 weren't released outside of Japan. So picking up English translated copies of these in a physical form is awesome.

General / Re: Worst Game(s) You've Ever Played?
« on: May 26, 2015, 01:13:52 pm »
Revolution X (SNES PC Saturn PS1 Genesis)
Acclaim really pumped out a ton of shit. Their library is so disproportionate it has got to be something like every 4 games they published only one of them was good or decent. However this is definitely among their worst.

Trigger Man (PS2)
This is one of the very few games I actually just threw in the garbage.

Strawberry Shortcake Musical Match-ups (Atari 2600)
You just match the character head torso and legs to match one of four Strawberry Shortcake characters and a melody plays that's it. I always find it funny when people say that E.T. is the worst game for the system when there's crap like this that doesn't even have anything resembling actual game play.

Spawn The Eternal (PS1)
Everything about this game is just incredibly abysmal. I bought it back when it was brandy new and even till this day just looking at it pisses me off.

Spec Ops Stealth Patrol (PS1)
One of those $10 dollar budget games that Take Two Interactive shat out alongside Martian Gothic, Darkstone and Grudge Warrior. It's been a long time since I played it what I remember most about it was being shot by enemies clear across the map through solid physical objects such as walls trucks and even through the actual terrain itself.

Classic Video Games / Re: All-In-One Cartridge Console Coming!!!

Meh looks like just another android based emulation box. Kind of hard for me to get excited about  a machine that just dumps my cartridge's ROM and runs it on an emulator.

Picked up 120 brand new CD-i controllers for free

Why? Can't imagine a huge market out there for CD-I controllers.
Wait a minute what? How?

Okay really.... who just find a sealed DKC at goodwill. really?!? Not only that, it looks to be in practically perfect shape.
I think the real question is who donates a sealed copy of Donkey Kong Country. I just put it up on ebay if any of you are interested. http://www.ebay.com/itm/251895629742?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

How much did you end up taking for it?

The auction says it sold for the full price.  :o
Nah I accepted the first offer of $175. Maybe I could have gotten more if I waited longer but I only paid $3 for it so I wasn't trying to be too greedy.

That sealed Donkey Kong Country is amazing!

A sealed Donkey Kong Country for 2.99.. Wow is all I can really say!
Yeah I couldn't believe it when I saw it. Usually most Goodwills screen stuff like this out for auction on that godforsaken shopgoodwill.com site. I think they must have thought it was a VHS tape since it was mixed in amongst them. However I have zero interest in collecting sealed games so I'm gonna flip it and maybe get one of the more expensive items on my wish list.

Finding Tomba! was awesome too. It's been on my wish list for a while now and not having to spend $70 for it was a huge plus.

Visited my local Goodwill today and found some awesome stuff. I found a Tomba and also a sealed copy of Donkey Kong Country mixed in with the VHS tapes all $2.99.  :D

Hardware and Tech / Re: Sega game gear
« on: February 17, 2015, 11:04:53 pm »
You first have to look at the model number to see which board revision you have. 2110 is by far the most common and uses the VA1 motherboard. If it a 2110K than it's a VA4 but I wouldn't bother with those as they quite often have unrepairable screen issues where sections of the screen permanently die out. The 2110G and Majesco Game Gears have the VA5 motherboard.

Here's a good place to buy cap kits

Here's also some information about cap values, location and board revisions.

If you've gotten it resurfaced than that's all you really can do. If there is a scratch on the label side that penetrated through to the data layer that's underneath than that can cause permanent data loss. You can check for that and also disc rot by holding the disc up to a light source and checking if you can see light penetrating through the disc's foil data layer.
It could also just be defective. I had a a copy of Xenogears that would play into a certain point of the game than freeze there every time despite the disc being completely flawless. I tried copying the disc's image to my computer and sure enough it reported unreadable/bad sectors.
