General / Re: Gaming/Collecting Goals for 2026

Around fall of 2024 I swore that I wouldn't buy another video game for a year, time FLEW buy and I had less struggle with it than I expected. I'm tempted to extend the challenge for another year. However, I still don't have a copy of Halo 4, and I just found out that the H4 Game of The Year edition which I have been weirdly drawn to for years is about 8 bucks on ebay (there isn't any exclusive content for me since it was all in the form of download codes  :( , yet the cover looks cool and I just love feeling like I have the most complete version of the game in a GOTY edition).

With generally not planning to buy games or even have time for playing them next semester (Past more Mario party nights off of Switch Online n64 with my roommates) the only things I can see myself picking up realistically are peripherals and the like.

I still only have one ps3 controller, and while all my games are still singleplayer, it would be forward thinking to have another. Likewise with the xbox 360, I need a few more if I am going to have a Halo reach LAN party like I am planning.

I have a copy of pokemon silver from a family friend with a dead save battery. At some point in time I need to go through the effort of replacing it, but I am intimidated by the task.

I have one that gets use every summer. My game shelf is in my room upstairs, which has a TV, but during the summer when I have time I will usually want to play xbox, xbox360, and ps3 games on the larger basement TV with the surround sound speaker setup (earlier playstations and nintendo consoles almost never have an experience that warrants a larger screen or better audio for me). I load up 3-5 games from those consoles that I know I'll be playing the most and then keep that down with the console, so convenient.

Does anyone here use consolevariations.com? I signed up there last week after it kept coming up in my google search results. Its fun to browse and has a lot of neat features like its achievements, but honestly feels very lacking in terms of content and organization (things like the Original xbox having multiple listings and whatnot). I guess VGcollect has me spoiled with how much effort has been put into this site over the decades to really flesh everything out.

marvelvscapcom2, how has your "no buying items made after 2005" journey been going? Anything you're proud of or particular difficulties?

Cognitively, I am completely content with my current game collection...

Obviously, logic and conscious thought don't determine my dreams.

The main plan is to merge my game collection with my girlfriends. She has a Wii u and a ps4, which perfectly fills in the gaps in my own collection (I have GCN Wii and Switch, and PSX PS2 PS3). Having access to ps4 hardware for the first time may open up new possibilities for me, seeing as ps4 game discs are dirt cheap nowadays ( I pretty much refuse to pay more than $30 for a video game anymore). I could see myself finally trying out all of the classics (God of War, TLOU2, etc). And I definitely need to get the Mass Effect Legendary edition after playing ME1 on it at a friends house.

Other than that. Someday I also want to get an xbox one model. I wanted to ask you guys about that. I'm thinking that I will have an xbone mostly for the sake of owning the whole generation from the big three, and wont be buying xbox live, so no online multiplayer. Would it be worth it to get the one s or one X models over the base phat model Xbone? I'm drawn towards the one X simply because I think its a great looking console, but so is the one S (I hate the glossy black of the original), are the differences in performance between them that noticeable? I won't have a 4k TV and care more about framerate than raw graphical quality if that matters.

I do want to one day have a proper collection, particularly boxed N64 games, that's kinda the big one I want, but most I have for display are my Switch/PS5 games, of which I can't play the Switch games since I don't have a Switch right now and my Zelda collection which I ended up clearing out a lot of it and mostly just have my amiibo's (I own them all other than Smash Bros Link and a couple others I'm forgetting) and a handful of games like my original N64 Zelda games, and boxed Japanese versions of Majora's Mask and Link to the Past.

What happened to your switch?

I am back home for my last ever college break, and have been engaging in my favorite activity, sitting at my gameshelf and reorganizing my games, this almost trumps playing them...

I don't have access to my switch of handheld games right now, so every night I have found myself returning to my PS3 to find something to do instead of reading my history book. So far I have downloaded tons of demos and free games from the Playstation store and had fun trying them out. Minecraft and Terraria ps3 somehow feel much smoother and cleaner than they do on the Switch.

I put all of my ps3 discs in just to check if there was any updates for them (I haven't played most of them after buying them used) and ended up checking out if they had working online. Its shocking that you can still get matches in modern warfare and modern warfare 2 (which is surprisingly really fun, as a diehard Halo fan, I was shocked by how much of a blast I was having getting pwned by all the maxed out rank players). Even Red Dead Redemption still has players online having shootouts at 2AM!

I really love Destiny on ps3, and really want to squeeze all I can out of the game content while the servers are still up and working smoothly, including the non-pvp achievements. I am, however, not sure how I can do any of the raids all on my lonesome.

Hi guys! its been a while, looks like I logged in for the first time since February 2022 just to catch some of you having epiphanies about buying things you don't really want. Good on ya! As for me, I badly miss actually getting to play my collection, but I'm so busy with school that I don't know if I have the time to even update my collection on the site. Next time I catch myself laying around I'll probably get around to organizing all my power cords and video cables for unused systems into plastic bags like I wanted to.

I finally got around to seeing Tropic Thunder. Felt like a fraud without it. So much better and all around funnier than I expected, why do they make Tom Cruise a badass instead of letting him be a weirdo (which he excels at here).

Honestly? I expect WW3 to break out in the next couple years and nukes to be used... so I'm not sure if my kids will survive let alone my collection.

Stock up on batteries to last a decade and leave your kids a single gameboy with tetris.

I have to admit I'm kind of surprised how much more gamers this is leaning. I can't remember exactly why but when I was here last year I had the feel that most people barely had time to play games at all and were just amassing collections for the heck of it.

I feel like you just started this thread to complain about how there are people that arent as wise with their money as you.

Once the summer ended it became 95% Collecting 5% playing. It's not like I have no time. But I really don't want to keep starting all the games that I am buying then abandoning them. So I'm only allowing myself to play Skyrim and Destiny 1 because I put considerable time into them this summer, and so when I don't feel like playing those, I don't play. Contrast that with collecting, where I can do that anytime and anywhere.
