Video Game Database Discussion / Re: Duplicate List 2019

Famicom Mukashibanashi: Yūyūki (Disk 1)
https://www.vgcollect.com/item/144972

Famicom Mukashibanashi: Yūyūki (Disk 2)
https://www.vgcollect.com/item/164517

^ These two are duplicates of (respectively):

Famicom Mukashi Banashi: Yuuyuuki - Zenpen
https://www.vgcollect.com/item/130357

Famicom Mukashi Banashi: Yuuyuuki - Kouhen
https://www.vgcollect.com/item/130356

This is partly my fault re: Disk 2 (Kouhen) as I wasn't aware it was on the database as Yuuyuuki. However, complicating things the yuuyuuki ones don't have images and the Yūyūki ones do.

Video Game Database Discussion / Re: Error Listings 2018

This was originally rejected due to the fact we do not correct romanization differences.

Based on our common names policy, this game can either be named:

Game de Hakken!! Tamagotchi Osucchi to Mesucchi

or

Tamagotchi: Osutchi & Mesutchi

Since the name put onto the edit was neither of these, the edit was rejected. It is recommended that the first be put onto the entry as the title, and the alternate romanizations put into alt-name field after the already existing Japanese text.

Thanks. Have now sent a request to change name to "Game de Hakken!! Tamagotchi Osucchi to Mesucchi", with "Tamagotchi: Osutchi & Mesutchi" as alt-name after the Japanese text as you said.

Hello, I submitted a fix to an error but it got rejected. Not sure why, and wondering if it can be accepted.

(ゲームで発見!! たまごっち オスっち と メスっち)

Here the correct title should be Game de Hakken!! Tamagotchi: Osutchi to Mesutchi, not "Game de Hakken!! Tamagotchi: Ouchi to Mesutchi"

オスっち (osutchi)
メスっち (mesutchi)

Osutchi and Mesutchi are a type of Tamagotchi

Thanks.

This is mine from most of the core games, favourite to least favourite. Thanks Cartagia for making the original list (slightly different). :)

I haven't included Super Mario Odyssey as I don't own it yet.

It's interesting how our preferences can differ a lot. I know an associate whose favourite game is Yoshi's Island, while I personally don't like it as much.

Super Mario 64
Super Mario 3D World
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario World
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Land
Super Mario Bros. 2
New Super Mario Bros. U
New Super Mario Bros Wii

General / Re: Built some inexpensive shelves
« on: November 07, 2017, 11:21:02 am »
Took an hour to build and another hour to sort alphabetically.  My lovely wife helped which was fun.  I suck at making things.  Ok so I'm concerned about weight. 77 games per shelf on average is a bunch of weight. BUT I like the results so far. Only need to add my PS4 and XBOX 360 and I'll be mostly done with this shelf leaving room for future purchases. I'll be displaying my Final Fantasy XII another way. Hard to believe how small my PS2 collection looks until you realize it's over 200 games up there. Haha.

Materials:
2qty 2x4's
10qty 1x2's (one split)
2" Drywall screws
2 deluxe wall anchors

Thoughts?  Go easy on me!!

These look amazing! :) I'm happy you came up with a means of storing your games extra tidy.

My stepfather recently built some shelves for games at my flat too.

Once again have RollerCoaster Tycoon, also with Added Attractions and Loopy Landscapes now, after rediscovering my love for the series since finding RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 at a charity shop. :)

8
I'd make sure to keep my Pokémon and Starfy games as those series are my top favourites, and the other games I'd keep would probably mainly be those I haven't completed yet.

Censorship:

Yeah. I feel the issue of censorship is tricky. Developers may remove controversial themes out of respect and to avoid potential conflict. It not only can be seen from a social justice perspective but also from a business perspective because if a company include something controversial in the game it could hurt their business' image.

But yes, I remember a discussion with a friend about this subject. I can't remember what he said but he argued against it and there is an idea that by introducing censorship it reinforces the idea that the subject is bad and could enforce a covert form of control/action against freedom of expression not only in the legal world but also in recreation like video games.

I personally support censorship in games targeted towards younger audiences but feel if a developer wants to include more mature themes (which would end up being rated for older people) so be it. This said what is taboo varies from culture to culture with I think more tolerance towards themes like nudity in Japan.

Fair use:

On the subject of fair use I think it ought to be implemented in more countries/states. Here in the UK we don't actually have fair use but rather fair dealing, where it is only permitted to use copyrighted media for purposes like teaching (in official schools) and there is a legal issue which is like this:

What if you were to edit for an American-based wiki but you lived in the UK, would you still be allowed to post artwork and screenshots if it was for fair use? This could also apply to YouTube.

Though we have fair use and I agree with being able to share official artwork/screenshots for illustration I personally don't endorse those who upload high resolutions artwork, public ROMs, public text dumps online. I don't discourage people using ROMs but only if they have the original game (but on the other hand there is a theory those who pirate music are more likely to buy an original officially licensed copy).

Media lies:

When it comes to media lies I often don't get sensitive to it unless people come across insisting in an unsocial way about it.

This said they seem more common than we think and there are rumours like "MissingNo. will break your game. Don't use it!" when in actuality English MissingNo. is only capable of Hall of Fame corruption at worst (although a Level 0 'M (00) can freeze the game when withdrawn from a PC due to its experience group. This can be avoided by releasing it). However the process of getting the 8F and ws m glitch items can erase your save file if you accidentally press A on an unterminated name glitch item while scrolling the inventory to look for 8F or ws m).

I believe that if you think strictly from a player's perspective, physical copies of online-exclusive games are pretty useless.
However, from a collector's point of view, to have the physical copies of such games means that, even after the servers are long dead, the memories and experiences that people had while playing them will last as long as that now useless disc is sitting on someone's shelf.

For me, collecting physical copies, even when the game becomes unplayable due to some sort of damage to the cartridge/disc or to lack of support from its manufacturer, means to preserve a part of the history of video games and, as such, even physical versions of online only games have their value. Specially if you have fond memories of that game.

I agree with this 100%.

If there is a series I like, I may want to collect merchandise for it even if the merchandise has no practical use or relatively less use compared to something like a cartridge or disc containing an offline game. I'm personally very sentimental like that, and many collectors may like to collect for memory/preservation too.

However some people may prefer download and/or just having the ability to play the game.

Recently, it's similar to what happened with the Nintendo 3DS eShop Pokémon Gold and Silver with Nintendo releasing boxed versions with only the download codes inside.

Recently fully completed Pokémon Gold and Silver (251 Pokédex no cheats but a glitch for Celebi) on 3DS Virtual Console. :)

I missed out being able to do this in the past and then the save battery issue became more relevant as time went on.

One type I've noticed is The Elitist. They'll throw around the term "True Gamer" even though such a thing doesn't really exist, will go on about how people who have a preference for casual games or anything else they don't like aren't "real gamers", and will take offense at people who they think don't qualify as gamers labelling themselves as such. Overall they seem to be convinced video games are a very serious lifestyle rather than just a hobby, and treat it like it's some sort of super secret club you have to earn entry to.

Ugh. I dislike that attitude too.

Off Topic / Re: What Was The Last Movie/Anime You Watched?
« on: November 05, 2017, 07:03:30 pm »
The last film I watched was actually the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie, I've always wanted to watch it so I bought a DVD of it online and enjoyed it.

Also bought a promotional Love Live CD and enjoyed a nice performance Snow Halation ╰(▔∀▔)╯. I wouldn't have known about it if it wasn't for SilvaGunner but it seems like a nice franchise. :)

I don't really like the perception some people have of video games being bad for the brain and responsible for lack of attention.

This? I can relate to. and I have to say religious organizations who have the mindset that video games are bad for the youth, just plain annoy me. >:( I teach Godly word on my Facebook page and I can tell you that people who cause riots over, lets say, (video games brainwash the youth) it just makes my blood angry,

I mean if parents don't want their kids into violent video game than they can buy sports games for their kids, but SOME PEOPLE, say ALL video games are bad. in fact their is a Facebook Fan page all about a protest against all video games. and it don't have vary many likes, I mean compared to mine

I often wounder how many fake likes that other page has

Yes. I feel people can be quite closed-minded at times and it makes me feel sad. :( I believe in God too but am personally agnostic-theist, although I relate to Christianity also Buddhism, and I like to look for the spiritual meaning in what the Bible says. I think people can take word out of context or not accept the other side of things (I do believe everything has two sides to it), and that can lead to conflict.

But yeah, its good not all people view video games as bad. :)
