Video Game Database Discussion / Re: Category/Platform Requests
« on: September 23, 2016, 07:12:55 am »
Regarding splitting the PC category as is still under evaluation. Wouldn't it make more sense to just have one category for the floppy disks and one for the optical discs? I mean, there was a time when PC games game delivered both on 3.5 and 5.25 inch disks in the same box (this might also be true for CD/DVD). Would it perhaps be easier/better to structure it something like this:

Split PC [NA] into:
- PC 3.5"/5.25" Floppy Disk [NA]
- PC CD/DVD-ROM [NA]

Split PC [EU] into:
- PC 3.5"/5.25" Floppy Disk [EU]
- PC CD/DVD-ROM [EU]
- PC - Digital Download [EU]

Since the majority of the existing games within the PC [NA] and PC [EU] categories are CD/DVD releases, just rename these categories to PC CD/DVD-ROM [NA] and PC CD/DVD-ROM [EU] and let the users move the floppy versions of games over to the new PC 3.5"/5.25" Floppy Disk categories over time.

Good job!

But my Items badge is still 1000 and my collection is over 5000 items now.

I think the only badges fixed so far are the "Anniversary Badges" and the "Edit Badges". Hopefully the rest will come later :)

Request:
- Playstation Portable [UK]

UK games go into EU category at the moment:
http://vgcollect.com/browse/pspeu
If it is a UK only game (has BFFC rating or other distinction from English EU release) then you use [UK] as title suffix.

Here is example, Activision Hits Remixed:
http://vgcollect.com/item/65326
and
http://vgcollect.com/item/108338

I bought a game in UK and when trying to update your version EU realized that there are differences, even in the back image of the box, even if the item number UCES is the same.

Sometimes there are indeed UK specific version of a European Release. In this case, put an [UK] in the end of the name, i.e. "Sim City [UK]" and put it into the [EU] category of the platform it belongs to

This is really clever and when I think about, I mean, we have all the data in place already. It's "just" to create a field and migrate data using the information we already have. I.e. all entries residing in i.e. PS3 [NA] category should have field = Region set to "North America". So while it is indeed a lot of work, it's not like we have to re-add every game to the database again :)

BTW, this region mess would be a LOT simpler if it were simply a field in the game's entry instead of a category. In other words, when you enter a game you should just choose the region for that game just like you choose dev, publisher, genre, etc. This would solve 2 problems: it would list all games by a platform together (am I the only one that hates that, for example, my PS3 collection is split between NA, JP, UK, etc?) and it would make adding new/missing regions a lot easier than having to create an entire new category.

I know this will never happen, it's too major of an upheaval of the system. It's become enough of an annoyance to me tho that I'm currently looking for other options to catalog my collection.  :-\

This is my dream. It would indeed be a crapton of work, but it would be easier to manage afterwards. I don't wanna leave Jason to tackle this alone, however. That would suck for him.  :-\ And I'm pursuing a promotion, so you might have noticed my regular absences recently  :'(

Let's just say that as an avid Complete-in-Box collector myself, me and my wallet are very happy that I'm not into collecting NES/SNES/N64 titles :D

Regarding the Saturn, be happy that you are in the US with the plastic cases. It's a nightmare here in Europe with the carton-boxes coming apart because of the bad glue used in production

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to rate each entry with between 1-10 stars and to show an average on all votes on each entry? It works pretty well over at Discogs

Just as with music where vinyl is currently selling more and more each year I think there will always be a collectors market for games. There will always be a market for people who want more than just the game, who wants something to put in the shelf to look at. So yes, while the majority of the market will be going in the digital direction I believe there is no reason to worry about there not being any physical releases anymore

I tried to lower my expectations as much as possible before the release because of all the hype that was going on. With that said, I must say that now after 6-8 hours played, I'm very satisifed with what I have seen. I guess what is interesting is what I will be thinking in 10-20 hours, will I be totally done with it then? Not so sure yet

I do not mind the singleplayer part of it, in fact I always thought "hey, this game is so big they could essentially say that it's multiplayer and then simply not develop that functionality and people wouldn't have noticed", of course I was wrong but again, I don't mind
