General / Re: DK Oldies? A scandal, or just another smear campaign?
« on: April 09, 2023, 03:52:18 pm »
They're getting exactly what they deserve for selling used stuff and calling it refurbished . The people doing unboxing videos and saying they're sketchy are not one gang of evildoers . It's people from all corners of the retro gaming scene confirming it .
Bottom line is that , regardless of price , DKOldies is advertising that they refurbish all consoles , claiming they open them and clean and repair them all as needed and they're not . Nearly all of the consoles that people have bought for unboxing videos have been dirty inside , some were filthy , a lot of the consoles were broken in some way . They don't replace thermal paste on consoles that it's a potential problem . I'm not sure why people are defending them at this point , this has actually been going on for like 3 months now .

Edit - I'm not saying that anybody deserves a death threat . I'm also taking everything that DKOldies claims with a grain of salt .

From what I've heard they cherry pick customers. old regulars that buy allot get the proper service like shown in the vids those orders are given to higherups, for everyone else it's a wild card.

Those people might defend them since they get a good service

That's pretty much what I've heard . I know that they offer customers freebies to post unboxings and then they use those in their own videos . They only use and reward the positive ones .

But I've also seem them film themselves owning up to mistakes, and replacing orders and even chipping in extras as an apology. Are you contending that they'd typically just stiff any customer who's not satisfied?

They had one video that I saw where they admitted sending a guy a SNES cart with a bad save battery , but he didn't initially do an unboxing video . They just used him for an advertisement and he was sent a game in better condition for his trouble . Were there more ?

General / Re: Yellowing screens of moderns handhelds?
« on: March 30, 2023, 10:09:59 am »
Is the brightness turned up on them all ? The DSi looks pretty yellow , but the others look in the range of normal to me . Not all LCD screens start out perfectly stark white , you might never even notice a yellowish tint unless you compare one screen with another side by side like that .

Realistically , I'd really like to pick up:
1 Super Hydlide
2 Phantasy Star II
3 Phantasy Star IV
4 Might and Magic II: Gates to Another World
5 Steel Empire
6 Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
7 Rings of Power
8 Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday
9 Beyond Oasis
10 Landstalker

At this point most will probably have cart only as prices are getting up there .

I recently paid $100 and change (tax and shipping included) to get a nice complete in box Gunpey Ex for the WonderSwan Color . I have just always regretted not buying it when WS prices were low and knew that If I didn't buy it soon it'd be totally out of the question . Very happy to own it , no regrets .

I ended up softmodding Xbox #2 and installing a 2TB HDD into it and an 80 wire IDE cable upgrade . I'm just filling it up with my games now . So far I'm liking it a lot .

I’d keep it if I liked it. It might be a gift that had some thought put into it, but it’s not a personalized symbol of your undying love like customized jewelry or a bottle of her favorite cologne ;D. As for a plushie or other trinket that I’m not really into, it’d go right into the bin or I’d give it away.

Xbox #3 tested fine . It was another early model from 2001 . Inside the clock capacitor was leaking just like the first one . Cleaned the heck out of it , no damage again to the motherboard , installed a new Eaton Supercapacitor for the clock cap and put new thermal paste on the CPU and GPU . It should be good for another decade or two . I think this one I bought about ten years ago cheap because it wouldn't read discs . I ended up replacing the DVD drive and sticking it in the closet as a spare .

I've been lucky. I keep hearing about leaks in them. My original Xbox is still going strong. As well as my modded one.
I went three for three . All three of mine had leaky caps . The two with leaky clock caps would've eventually killed the consoles . Definitely worth checking once in a while .

Have you ever considered using protective sleeves ? I bought some DVD sized and Blu-Ray sized . Haven’t started putting my games in them yet. I also got some assorted sizes for the different manuals as well . It’s crazy how much money some of the manuals are worth on their own just to have them clipped inside unprotected bugs me. Especially Genesis and SMS manuals, they’re always in rough shape and fall out when you open the case half the time.

I actually do have protective bags for my games, but haven't started bagging them up yet. I will probably bag up all my sealed games to keep the seal from becoming torn, and possibly my CIB expensive games as well, just to keep my friends grubby paws off :). I really don't care for the look of bagged games on my shelf, but will make the exception for sealed games.

As for the manuals issue, trust me I'm right there with you on that. I've started bagging up my manuals for my CIB N64/SNES games. The N64 manuals are especially prone to damage every time you try and take the game out, just because of the way the inner trays are designed inside some N64 boxes. I should probably make a video on that one day to show how I store the books once all bagged up.
Nice, I thought maybe I was the only one . I started getting into the habit when I started buying steelbooks. Those get scuffed up so easily. You’re right , it looks kind of sloppy on the shelf.

Yeah I never keep my games too tightly packed on a shelf. If you do, over time you will scuff the outer plastic on the case, causing it lose that shiny fresh out the shrink wrap feeling, you know what I mean. I always allow for just enough wiggle room between each so to say, but never too lose where there not standing up nicely. I also never stack games vertically if I can avoid it, as this is the easiest way to put dents into your case artwork.

Certainly the number of cases per shelf is very important to the equation . The more cases you have on a shelf , the easier is to get them in too tight so keep that in mind too .

#2 Xbox

This purple one has a problem . I tested it and it wouldn't even power on so I was fearing the worst . It's the later model and doesn't have the clock cap problem , but it has 5 bulged out leaky larger capacitors (3300uF 6.3v) . Apparently this is also very common . All of these are bulged at the top and 4 are leaking orange crap also out of the top . Ordered a set .

Update on #2 : I replaced the 5 bad caps and she fired right up , good as new . I also replaced the thermal paste and let it run for a few hours .

I don’t know if PS2 is any different than any other cases, but my rule is to keep my games snug at the worst , never tight . If you can pull a single game out without pulling out others with it, it’s probably okay. I know some DVD cases were made out of flimsy brittle plastic and even those do fine snug on a shelf.
