General / What are your tips for spotting fakes?
« on: May 16, 2017, 02:18:24 am »
Hey all,

Just came across a reprint at GameStop. Found a cheap copy of Bomberman Land Touch but didn't take a good look at it until I got home. The first thing that tipped me off was the poorly printed manual (text was blurry and at some points looked like it needed 3-D glasses for full effect). The sticker looked kinda filmy, too, and off.

The more I looked at it, the more I became suspect, so I started looking up the tells for a fake DS cart.  Thought it was pretty interesting, and I'll definitely be looking closer from now on before buying. Some things that definitely were indicators on the fake cart:

- the font for the serial number on the sticker was a generic font. I've come to know the Nintendo DS font well, and it definitely looked off.
- the Nintendo seal on the back of the cart has an actual ® where the legitimate carts have a dot only

There were other telltale things, such as the top of the cart looking too smooth, the general pixelization of all the images, and the lack of serial number stamped on the back. Unfortunately, we'll be returning the game, but just made me wonder: what are the things you immediately check for when looking for a legitimate game? What can you look for in eBay listing photos that help?

Hi all,

Looks like Amazon is doing another FFXIV promotion:
Qualifying orders of $19.99 or more on video games (purchase or pre-order) on will earn you an promotional code that, when redeemed, will grant you three Eastern-themed in-game items!

A number of friends and I play actively these days, so in case you get an email with a promotion code (and aren't interested at all in playing), could you pass it on to me or someone else on the forum who might be interested? We'd be happy to put it to good use :)

And if you *are* interested in FFXIV and want to start a new account, let me know! Happy to pass on a recruitment code :)

Didn't try to enter this since I certainly don't need to dive into collecting figurines, but I thought it was a neat prize.

Good luck to anyone who enters!

Modern Video Games / Streaming and new video games
« on: April 04, 2017, 03:35:42 pm »
With the recent announcement/request from Atlus today regarding Persona 5 (I'm not going to link their tweets since people have been commenting with spoilers), just thought I'd see what you all thought.

Some folks have reacted very angrily, and others have said it's a dangerous precedent. What are folks' thoughts?

I personally hate spoilers, but also don't feel like people should be restricted from sharing their experience if they want. A big risk of streaming live is that someone can come in and spoil the game for you at any second, but it's a risk you take when you go live with any game. Folks searching for playthroughs online might want to watch because they are unable to play it themselves for whatever reason or are interested in alternative ways to play or make decisions in-game. They obviously wouldn't care about spoiling the game for themselves.

I can see this coming up again depending on how folks react. Hugely anticipated games like Fallout 4 and such risked a lot of spoilers for streamers, so much so that someone created a bot to delete any messages with key spoiler words.

*To clarify*
Atlus asked people to limit gameplay footage being recorded to only certain parts of the games and no footage beyond a certain in-game date. Content published that goes against these wishes is subject to a takedown/channel strike.

For those of you who missed out on the retro CE and/or wanted an actual physical game  rather than just goodies + digital code :)

Just wanted to mention also I received a replacement cover for the original iam8bit first print of Rez Infinite, and the revised cover (with metallic foil details) is really nice, in case folks were apprehensive about their quality.

Possibly free just for the month of March, but once added to your collection, you can play it whenever. Played the first one and loved it! Looking forward to diving into the sequel. The third game in the series is in production.

Hey, I thought this was a pretty cool program that launched today for folks who have Amazon Prime. If you have Amazon Prime, you also get Twitch Prime for free. Every month, they give free DLC and sometimes games. Banner Saga currently has a Kickstarter going for their 3rd game, and they will be receiving funding just from people playing the first two games... which are being given away for free this and next month!
