I'm guessing they did it to conform to the jewel case format.

I will say I am surprised to find out some games received jewel case releases, some of which are very, very hard to find. There is a jewel case version of D that is ridiculously hard to find, as well as In the Hunt.

I'm surprised how much D is going for, in any form. It was one of the first Saturn games I bought, and I thought it was awful.

I feel like anything survival horror has really seen a huge spike in price over the past couple of years. I remember when Haunting Ground was a $30 game not that long ago. now it's like $100. And yes, a lot of awful survival horror games are becoming way too expensive. Probably one of the best examples is Ju On and Kuon.

So true. The genre is becoming way more collectible nowadays, aside from Resident Evil or Silent Hill. Some of them are decent games, but I don't understand the hysteria over owning them.

I haven't played Super Mario Galaxy more than a few minutes, so I wouldn't feel right ranking it, and I have never played Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Galaxy 1 for me was a fantastic game, because it reminded me so much of a modern adaptation of 64, which is my favorite. Galaxy 2 is a bit different though, to me it seemed more like the linear and side-scrolling style of gameplay, and I'm not sure if it was just me but it also seemed like a shorter game.

So talking Mario today got me thinking about this. How do you order all of the main Mario entries from most favorite to least appreciated for you? Here is my list (and I do include Yoshi's Island because it's called SMW 2, and handheld entries that represent the main series).

1 - Super Mario 64
2 - Super Mario Galaxy
3 - Super Mario World
4 - Super Mario Bros. 2
5 - Super Mario Sunshine
6 - Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
7 - Super Mario Bros. 3
8 - Super Mario Galaxy 2
9 - Super Mario Bros.
10 - New Super Mario Bros. Wii
11 - New Super Mario Bros. Wii U / New Super Luigi
11 - Super Mario 3D World
12 - New Super Mario Bros. DS
13 - Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels
13 - Super Mario Land

As a fan I'm embarrassed to admit I've never played 3D Land, Land 2, Land 3, or New Super Mario Bros. 2, so I don't know where those would fit for me.

This is something that occurred to me. I know there are a few PS1 games that were only ever sold in long box form. But, it intrigues me that so many of them were re-printed in jewel case form. Quite a few of them were not successful games to the point of gaining Platinum Hits status either.

So how far back did they go to reprint games into jewel cases? Some of them had to be out for a while, and why did they bother doing it? The games were already out, the initial sales were over, the jewel cases weren't going to boost further sales. So did they feel somehow obligated to reprint all of those games? Who paid for the reprint? The individual publishers, or Sony?

Another weird thing is why were there three long box versions? They couldn't decide which to go with? Personally I like the plastic one with the ridges on the spine. But it's strange, some games were made with all three versions of the long box. That's another mystery in itself.

Any former Sony employees here know why they made all of these weird packaging a re-printing choices?

First pic is birthday presents and the second are birthday pickups :)

Re-Loaded, huh?  ;) I don't know why King's Field is so flippin coveted nowadays, it's like $30 on eBay for the jewel case version. Luckily a local shop has like 20 of them and sells them for $5.

^ I don't know how you heard the contrary. It's a game named Doki Doki Panic in Japan, with entirely different characters. They just switched out sprites and made a few changes to the game when they ported it to the U.S. as SMB 2.

Am I missing something here? You did say that you heard that our SMB 2 was the original vision for Miyamoto, correct?

As in he once considered making the global release the version that we got, before finalizing the Japan sequel, because he liked the concept of the version we ended up getting better. Yes, it was built from another game. But my point is, if it has Miyamoto's approval and favor, it's a legit Mario game. Since the info of the version's background came to be common knowledge, people treat it as a black sheep.

Jealous of you guys that got to go to the BB Mario event. :P That lanyard looks amazing!

I wish they had included SMB2 in MM. Yes, yes, I know "It wasn't originally a Mario game!" I don't care. For thousands of kids in the 80's, including myself, it was Super Mario Bros. 2. There was no internet to tell us of its origins, and no one I knew questioned it.

And I still say it's the best Mario game on the NES.  :P

I didn't like SMB2 all that much, but I can understand how someone could :) I guess the gameplay/physics was just too different for it to fit MM easily?  :-\

Nintendo treats it like the red-headed stepchild. But if it was good enough for them to label it an official part of the series in the 80's, then they should stand behind it now. Quite a few staples of the Mario series came from that game, after all - Shy Guys and the different attributes of Mario, Luigi, Toad & Princess, just to name a couple.

It's also one of the best-looking games on the NES IMO. I thought Mario 3 was a step back graphically - the characters all look "squished" and weird.

Yeah, it kind of gets annoying how everyone nowadays is compelled to remind you "that's not REALLY a Mario game". I've heard so much to the contrary. Including how it was Miyamoto's favorite Mario game, that he liked it better than Japan's SMB2, and a rumor that his original vision of SMB2 was our version. Personally, I like our SMB2 better than 1, or 3.

Deep scratches do, not superficial ones. If you can run your fingernail across and feel the pit, then you are in trouble.

$20 for Double Dragon? Sheesh.

I feel sorry for the people who are out there paying real prices for games that I found for a couple of dollars.

Score. Great game! :D

Modern Video Games / Re: Shenmue 3!!!

Yep, as much as I like Shenmue and do think it's probably one of the greatest games ever. I want a physical copy, and not a PC one. In fact, I want Wii U copy (or maybe a Nintendo NX copy?). ;) Okay, that won't happen. But I will buy a physical copy for PS4, even though I don't intend to get a PS4.

Why are all the Paper Mario games going exclusively to handheld these days? That's pretty disappointing. Would rather play it on Wii U. They put Kirby Rainbow Curse on Wii U, and Paper Mario on DS. What where they thinking? It's like you want to play the game?? Here, play it on the wrong format for optimized gameplay!

Been watching too much Nerd again. But this is lame.

I picked up another copy of Spec Ops: Stealth Patrol for the PS1.

...

This is the third time I've picked up that stupid game thinking I didn't have it. ARGH.

You should join one of those gaming sites that lets you catalog your collection. Then this wouldn't happen!

Oh, I know what it's like to game hunt with someone who never has a clue what they have. The "use" VG Collect but their catolog is useless because they don't take the time to add any new purchases to it. It's so annoying! Not sure if you have it? Maybe it's a sign that you shouldn't buy it because it can't be that interesting of game if you think you've already forgot about it.
