NES on Theater projector
« on: May 10, 2014, 04:39:35 pm »

I got it working but with no sound however.  :'( The only cable I had was HDMI to DVI which doesn't support audio.

ORIGINAL POST:
I started working at small town theater a few weeks ago and they/we have a newly installed 2K digital projector. [Edit: Slight change of plan. Read my reply below] My first thought was to plug a PC or Wii U or other modern system up to it, however I figured it would be much cooler to setup an NES/Famicom/2600 instead.

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! A 20 ft tall Dynamite Kid is a scary thing.

Next, do Castlevania. That seems like a good choice too.

Sorry folks, I was incorrect about inputs on the system. It's just HDMI and component. So unfortunately that takes the NES out of the picture (unless I mod it). On a more up-beat note I'll just run an emulator instead. That opens up the games to anything I guess. Or I could just set up a Wii U/Wii for some Virtual Console stuff.

Ooohhh that's a nice idea.
It must be pretty cool to play on a gigantic screen!

Any news on the Retron5 being a good alternative as, if I remember correctly, the system has HDMI?

I occasionally hook up older consoles to my projector in my home theater, which throws a 102" image.  It's fun, but games look horrible when blown up to that size through a standard composite cable.  The RetroN 5 is a Godsend for my setup, since it upscales to 720 and has other smoothing features that should make old games look great.  I think it's supposed to be shipping within a few weeks.

Was there any input lag with a setup like that?

It was from the projection system. Theater systems were never built with gaming in mind

My dad used to have a large screen projection TV back when I was a kid and yes we would occasionally hook up our games to it. Good times!

When I was snowed in at work in 2001, my friend and I took over the corporate projector to play NES games. 2 foot tall Megaman is a weird experience.
