Common Name Exception Poll #1: Formula 1
« on: September 11, 2018, 12:25:46 pm »
F1/Formula 1 games currently do not work properly with out naming system, due to the fact that our reference sites are at odds with each other or even with themselves.

This is specifically for F1/Formula 1 games that have the combined logo, as can be seen here:
https://vgcollect.com/item/60430

GameFAQs uses this name: Formula One Championship Edition
Mobygames uses this name: Formula 1 Championship Edition
However, on some other releases, both of these sites may use (interchangeably) Formula 1, Formula One or F1
And in our own database, we use all sorts of combinations.

Now that we have a dedicated post for Naming exceptions, let us use it to handle this situation.

The options are:
1. F1 (this is the abbreviated name)
2. Formula 1 (This is the official name of the company)
3. F1: Formula 1 (logo with workmark)

There are potentially more combinations possible, but we should use the number 1 instead of the word one, as games with this 1994 and newer logo use the number and not the word.

Reminder: This is only for instances where their logo contains both the F1 and Formula 1 mark, and not any instances pre-1994 and any that use just the F1 logo on its own without the Formula 1 workmark.

EDIT: Added 4th option to just follow existing naming policy and not create a naming exception. The reason why I bring this up is because if we follow existing naming policy with these games, there will be games with Formula 1, F1 and Formula One (all using the same logo) having different naming conventions in the same category.

Poll will run 7 days, users can change their votes, you can see results after voting.

just a quick look through most of the formula 1 games tells me we should probably keep it "Formula 1" as every release seems to have formula 1 written out but not all games have "F1" anywhere on the case (specifically ps1 games).

I also think that if it is written out on the case as "Formula One" we should place that in the entry as well.

this one will be a pain otherwise.

Hmm ok we can amend this to only being about the games that use the F1 logo as a "text replacement" in titles. Most common being the releases starting with PS2 era and newer that just have their logo and a year. Games that have the logo in addition to the actual game title, like in your example, would not need to have the duplicated term in the title.

So that PS1 game can just be Formula One Arcade... which would be OK due to 2 reasons:
1. The name matches out common name policy
2. The exact name is on the spine

The exact name being on the game itself, be it the front, spine or media, is enough to satisfy the requirement to match the common name policy.

In any case, which ever one we decide via the poll, the losing option (say F1 vs Formula 1) should end up having that in the alt-name anyways. So we are not really saving any work for ourselves by picking one to use, but to make an attempt to make browsing a category or your collection look nicer.

Style Guide updated with poll results.

In the case where a game uses the F1/Formula one combined logo as "text" we will use Formula 1 in the title.

Also note that Black Ops 4 was put onto there, under the same reasoning as the previously talked about Resident Evil VII. I will bring a new discussion to the poll ideas thread in relation to this.

More than five years later, I'm deciding to post in this dedicated topic so that something I've noticed can gain formal clarification for anyone visiting this discussion later on.

For an item like 260695, its center title is clearly F1 2001. However, the Formula 1 logo is also present elsewhere on the packaging, such as in the bottom-right corner of the front art. Is this also an instance for when the entry should be titled as Formula 1, or instead F1?

This is in relation to them using the logo as text replacement. It is not the case with this version.
