So.... is it time for Secret Santa sign-ups?  ;)
I wouldn't be surprised if we don't do it this year.

I know some of the other communities I'm in are talking about skipping this year.

1) A lot of folks are in financial distress
2) Going out and hunting isn't exactly reasonable for folks these days
3) Folks are weary of sending/receiving stuff
4) Lots of concerns in regards to shipping services, both international and domestic

If we do SS, I don't know if I'll take part this year because of #2.  Last year my SS had a very narrow scope for their list, so it didn't leave me with many options.  It worked out and wasn't a problem, but it could've very easily had been a scenario where it was ebay or nothing, and that's how things are for me these days for lots of stuff.

And if I do take part, I'll probably commit at the last second.

Yeah, #2 and #4 are my biggest concerns at the moment.  If we've got enough people interested I will definitely still participate, though.

Then I think it would be good to at least have a discussion about whether folks would like to do it now rather than later. Certainly if people feel like they can't afford it/ would rather not deal with buying stuff, etc. then that's perfectly fine. No one's expected to participate. We could also drop the budget requirements, maybe $35 or even lower.

I've always bought stuff online for SS with the occasional purchase from an brick and mortar store so that isn't an issue for me personally.

This is one thing that I was looking forward to in this awful year so I would love to still participate and help make it happen.

I'm interested in participating again if for no other reason that to disappoint another member on the board with some Cincinnati style chili.  ;)

If it doesn't pan out for 2020, perhaps we could move it out to next year and do like a Secret Santa Christmas in July?  :P

Also, not to speak for him, but I think Soera has been super busy lately, don't know that he'd have the availability to organize again.

SS would be fun, and it's always something to look forward to. But, given the way this year has been going it's cool if it doesn't happen. I guess I'm good either way.

I'd like to think we'd at least have enough interest to do something smaller scale at least. And I'd be willing to help run things too (if Soera isn't able to)!

One of the places I participate in is still doing their Secret Santa, but instead the options are either Amazon wishlists, digital gifts, or straight up eBay drop-shipping. There are still options available that don't involve having to go out and hunt for the recipient's gift. Sure, I know that's partly what's cool about it, but there's no harm in breaking tradition once in a while.

Another Secret Santa is still possible, just work around the current situation and you'll be set. However, if it can't be done, then it can't be done.

Just my two cents.

So I tried really hard to get a Nvidia RTX 3080 this morning and umm, it didn't go as I thought. I am very fortunate to have a Microcenter store just 15-minutes from where I live and I thought that if I arrived at 4am or so I'd pretty much be assured a video card. The store confirmed they were getting 30 3080 cards in from various manufacturers, and at the evening before there were 6 people camped out. By the time I arrived at Microcenter at 4:45am there were around 40 people in line for 30 cards. I wasn't about to wait in line at around 40th place in hopes that 10 people in front of me had their credit cards declines or were just tagging along with friends. I decided to get home and get some sleep before work.

I wake up and find out that the Founders Edition cards on Nvidia's website sold out pretty much instantly, and people were flipping the cards on ebay for 3x to 8x their $700 MSRP. I hate scalpers with a passion, but if I could potentially make almost $3000 off something I bought I'd have a hard time justify holding into it too.

My main concern that if initial demand literally has people paying thousands of dollars over MSRP for a graphics card, how long is it until I can reasonably obtain one without having to camp out 20-hours before one comes out, or having to obsessively check Newegg all day long. I really want to get a 3080, shit even a 3070 before Cyberpunk 2077 launches in November. While I'm not entirely sure I'm going to do this, I may "settle" for a RTX 2080, which was the card I was originally going to buy last May when I built my current rig. However I decided to wait for the 3000 series cards in order to help future proof my PC. But it's looking like getting one of those cards will require me to engage in a level of consumerism that I don't know if I'm willing or shameless to partake in. We'll see I guess.

Just go with VGCers.

If I have to pick, I’ll be a VGCollector.

Anyone able to pre-order one of those Game & Watch Super Mario Bros. units yet (in the US)? As far as I can tell they still haven't gone on sale anywhere yet.

Yes, you answered your own question. I'm guessing places like GameStop will start accepting pre-orders by next month, but don't quote me on that.
