The First Omen - It's spooky and atmospheric and has tremendous performances across the board, but I don't think the plan ultimately makes any sense?

Bridge of Spies - Underrated in the Spielberg canon, methinks.  The first half is substantially stronger than the back half, though.  If it was just about the Abel trial and that part was about 30-40 minutes longer I think it could have been a all-timer courtroom drama - and Rylance's Oscar win would make more sense.  Also can't help but wonder what it would look like if the Coens directed their own script.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - There's no such thing as a perfect movie... but this is a perfect movie.

Beetlejuice - One of the most singularly creative visions to have ever come out of Hollywood.  Man I hope the sequel doesn't suck.

STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie - Astonishingly well put together bio-doc. Some of the best editing I think I've ever seen.  Not a weepy retrospective, but rather a thoughtful look at the career of a man who is probably an underrated performer these days.  Just wonderful.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice - Never in a million years would I have thought that the biggest issue I had with the Beetlejuice sequel was that it had too many decent ideas.  I really appreciate the commitment to saying fuck you to Jeffrey Jones.

Arachnophobia - See?  Burning down the house is the best course of action.

In the Name of the Father - An emotional powerhouse from Jim Sheridan and Daniel-Day Lewis? Who woulda guessed?

The Killer's Game - Decent concept, great cast, with pretty good action, but the script isn't that hot, and it has some real structure and pacing issues.  Scott Adkins gets the best fight of the movie, but isn't in it nearly enough.  How do you have Daniel Bernhardt as the main heavy and not give him a real fight scene?  Should have pared down the rogues gallery and given them both more to do.

Suitable Flesh - It's fun with a couple decent setpieces, but leans too far into the camp aspects.

Your passion for film really doesnt cease to amaze me. I aim to build this level of review aggregation with media perhaps for games.

Do you keep a checklist of films you aim to see like a pre launch schedule or bucket list or is it just kinda whatever catches the eye type of deal?

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

Recents

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice - Michael Keaton carries this like a fire fighter im just gonna say it. Everyone else had moments. Michael was the moment and the sole thing that kept this nostalgic imo. Really great. - 91

Reagan - I wont get into political semantics here. But critics reviewing this 12 percent and movie goers giving it a 98 shows the issue of the modern day news outlet critics. They aim to review discourse and move perception rather than review the quality of a film.  Movie was great. Idk how much is imbeloshed. But I enjoyed it - 95/100

Crossroads - Dont go in expecting Shindlers List. Its a rom com starring Britney Spears. Its cute for what it is.

I've mentioned this on here before, but if there were a Letterboxd style app for video games instead of movies I would be on it in a heartbeat.

I do have a watchlist, but it isn't very long, and it is mostly prestige, arthouse or obscure stuff mostly just so I don't forget about them.  I'd say a good 80% of what I watch is just whatever jumps out at me when I'm browsing, but I do also try to keep up with big new releases and awards contenders.  I've got a membership with AMC theaters that is about $22 a month and I can see 3 movies a week with that.  It's paid for itself many times over at this point.

The Incredibles - Haven't seen this in at least 15 years. It feels so refreshing when contrasted against the behemoth of the MCU. Stylish, sleek, inventive, and even sexy in ways that not a single one of those films are. The animation is starting to show its age a little bit 20 years on, and it leans slightly too Randian, but the familial dynamics, action and humor are top notch. Amazing performance from Holly Hunter here as well.

Wish - This is messy as hell.  The lead comes off as incredibly self-centered and the villain has a heel turn almost as severe as Anakin murdering children after a day.  The aesthic is good in individual shots, but the character design is mostly uninspired, and cinematography pretty flat.  'What I Know Now' is a real banger but the rest of the songs are pretty bland, with the villain one being particularly bad.

Dune 2 - I wouldn't say I love the Dune movies, I'm unlikely to rewatch them, but they are a pretty solid bit of scifi and everything that has to do with the action is incredible from a visual standpoint.  I think a little bit of my disinterest comes from never connecting with the overall lore and story, it's fine, but for some reason doesn't do a lot for me, it's a lot of odd stuff to do with visions and psychic powers, it's not a ton of appeal there.  Still good movies and even saying that, I'm curious to see where the next one goes as I heard the next one is supposed to be a lot stranger I believe.

Civil War (2024) - Always had a thing for dystopian/post-apocalyptic films, but you don't see a lot of this turmoil in America type setups unless it's a zombie or virus outbreak, and I think its interesting tackling it from the point of view of war journalists.  It's trying to not pick a political side, but I feel like it leans abit more one way than the other with the President.  It's not going for a message that I can tell, maybe I'm overlooking it, honestly, the Civil War part is almost just set dressing for a story about these war journalists trying to get the best shots, detached from the horrors happening all for the sake of the best photo's.  It all leads up to a very weird ending and it has some odd tonal issues dotted throughout.  Truly hard to get a read on it.

It's a solid, intense watch for most of it even if it's abit odd at times.

AfrAId was more entertaining than I expected! I was intrigued by it when the trailer first released but ended up not seeing it in theaters. Just finished watching it and it pretty much delivered on being a new version of Disney's Smart House which is what I hoped for. There does seem to be a lot cut out of this movie but I guess that's fine to keep the runtime short and sweet.

One thing I wish this had was more Sony synergy. They do display a Sony movie on TV but that was the only Sony thing I spotted. In the movie they make mentions of Minecraft of and a random but real Netflix documentary, the kid should've been excited to play Concord, not Minecraft!! The blatant use of Sony Xperia phones and Vaio laptops in older Sony movies was charming.

The Substance - A pulsating, throbbing, and propulsive piece of pure art.  Fearless performances from Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley. Slowly builds in darkness and intensity until a brain frying finale.  A must see for horror fans.

Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me - Genuinely better than I remembered and more original ideas than I'd given it credit for, though the repeated jokes are still one of the bigger issues with the movie.  It obviously has way more money behind it, but spends it wisely and doesn't sacrifice the overall aesthetic. Hyper self-aware with how much of a phenomenon Austin had become, to its credit and detriment.

Bastille Day - Genuinely impressed with how generic this is.  Idris is in 100% and Richard Madden is having fun with whatever that American accent is.  Plus, the action is a decent.

Quick Change - I've never been much of a Bill Murray acolyte, but there are some really good lines and bits in this.  Randy Quaid's character doesn't really work, though, and the hit to miss ratio isn't great.  Geena is unsurprisingly great, though!

The Contestant - It doesn't dig as deep as it probably should have, but it is still an intriguing look at how exploited this poor guy was - when it wasn't even necessary. There was no reason to trick someone into doing this.  This concept is strong, but man that producer is a real piece of work to have just lied to and taken advantage of Nasubi.

The Substance wasn't great. It didn't help I saw the end coming half an hour before it happened. Some cool looking body horror stuff but unnecessarily long and doesn't actually say much.

Rebel Ridge -  An easy way to get me on board with your movie to start it off with some good metal music and Iron Maiden is a great and unexpected choice nowadays lol That being said, I think it's just an alright movie.  It went in a direction I didn't expect, because while it does have that Reacher feel, it's a much less action heavy and more realistic take on that concept.  The slight problem is that it's like they are almost teasing it turning in the direction of a Reacher or Rambo, there's setup for doing that, but they never pull the trigger, so to speak.  I think the goal was to subvert expectations.  It's still a decent thriller, but kinda never quite becomes more than that for me.

Eight Legged Freaks - More Tremors than Arachnophobia, but far sillier than either. Has a fair amount of carnage and collateral damage for PG-13, but the CG has aged considerably and it could really stand to have a better tonal balance.

The Wild Robot - Mind bogglingly gorgeous film that deftly handles themes of found family, nature, death, and friendship.  Could have really taken some more time to breathe in the first (superior) half, as it gets way too busy in the third act and seems to abandon the more mature circle of life ideas the first act illustrates so well.

Return of the Living Dead III - I think this might be my favorite Yuzna flick. Killer gore and make-up effects. Solid outbreak storyline. If it had a slightly higher budget and a deeper supporting cast it'd be an easy pick for one of the Top 5-10 zombie movies.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - The biggest flaw of this from a modern viewpoint is probably the pacing, with some scenes of the overly emotive aching going on for far too long (though I completely understand they are a product of their time).  Otherwise it's pretty much a masterclass in silent filmmaking and expressionistic design.

Fukushima 50 - My Japanese interests led to me wanting to see more on the actual events from back then, as I only had casual knowledge of it and mostly was about recovery efforts and the state of things in recent years through channels like Abroad in Japan.  I thought the movie was decent, the actual disaster had some real great effects and the events as they went along were interesting.  I did check opinions on it afterwards and it sounds like some of the political stuff was probably embellished and it doesn't go into details about how the electric company probably could've avoided the disaster with the right countermeasures in place, something they delayed to 2016, instead of installing them before the disaster, but otherwise it gave me what I was looking for.

I thought the English dub was overdoing it at first, but switching to the Japanese, it's definitely on point lol Japanese dramas can go abit overboard with the melodrama.  I think the dub just stands out kind of in the wrong way, because the dub audio is so clean and noticeable compared to the Japanese audio that is actually done from the rooms and places they are at.  That could've used a little tweaking, but otherwise fine.

Rift (1990) - And for something completely different, a pretty cheesy B-movie that feels like it's from the early 1980's, but released in 1990, like this was a year after The Abyss and you would never be able to tell lol I don't jump into random old movies, I'm not someone usually trying to find some "so bad it's good" sort of thing, but underwater creature movies are a fun scenario for me and I had never heard of this one.

It's pretty bad, but entertaining enough I thought.  Lead is your generic 80's action man that feels like the budget Mel Gibson or Stallone, super handsome, buff, and also a genius engineer.  It does at least have Ray Wise and R. Lee Ermey for a little bit of star flair to it.  It's kind of a bad underwater creature movie, because while the first half is them traveling in a sub to find another one that was lost, it then kinda becomes a generic bit of action schlock, though you do get some silly, but fun creature effects, people getting killed, all you'd expect from a movie like this.  All the cliche's are here, for better or worse lol

It's nothing I'd recommend, but if you got a taste for these types of 80's b-movies, it's not super bad.

Apollo 18 - One more random watch, from the deep sea to the moon, an interesting found footage idea.  Basically the moon trips stopped with Apollo 17...OR DID THEY?!?! And that's the premise for a horror movie.  It's pretty solid setup, I actually really enjoy very scaled down movies like this, very small cast, if not just a single character, usually singular locations, but the premise is pretty great, though I question how they "found the footage" for this lol

Apparently it was kinda critically thrashed? I don't know why? Sure, it's got some clear Alien homage to it, but it's a well acted, great setting, lower budget horror flick (As low as 5 million bucks can be), that does a great job making it feel like they captured this 70's era moon trip.  Glancing at some reviews, people didn't really like the lack of an overarching narrative, but that's not the point of the movie, it's found footage, it's showing something that happened, but even then, it has a pretty solid story to it that gets expanded as it goes along.  I feel like people expected something on the level of Alien, but it's like going to Cloverfield and expecting a Godzilla movie.

I would recommend this one if you like scifi horror, it's nothing amazing, but I thought it was a good watch and a nice way to kick off the spooky month with the handful of games and movies I've got planned.

The Church - More coherent than any of the Argento directed films I've seen, but doesn't vibe quite as hard as any of those, either.  Loved the chaotic third act, and wish it had gotten everyone locked inside the church a little quicker and developed that section a bit more.

Immaculate - Gorgeous visuals, a good soundtrack, and solid pacing do a lot of heavy lifting against a general lack of atmosphere and tension.

Despite being super busy right now with cramming as much study time as I can for another tech cert test I'm taking on November 1st, I wasn't about to let the month of October slip by without getting into the season of Halloween. Of course, one of the best ways of doing this, at least for me, is watching horror movies. I decided to rewatch the original Alien movies which are all a huge part of my experience growing up. Unlike Star Wars, a terrible AvP movie and the absolute piece of trash Alien Covenant weren't enough to ruin this franchise for me. But after watching all four movies again I'm left with a few thoughts and feelings that I feel differ from how I used to feel about these movies overall.

Alien: I know this will be blasphemy to many, but this is still my least favorite of the original four Alien movies. I get why it is so loved, but it never resonated with me the way it does so many others. I find it to be a tad slow and also dated, especially compared to the other 3 movies which can mostly be enjoyed just as much today as they could back when they came out. I will say, however, that this movie does grow on me a little more each time I watch it and this last time was no exception.

Aliens: For years I debated whether I liked Aliens or Alien 3 more. I thing at different times of my life I liked one slightly more than the other, but now I absolutely love Aliens more than either of its sequels. This movie just never ever gets old. The effects are still great, almost nothing about this movie feels dated, and it's just so well done from start to finish. The part with the Alien queen at the end still gives me goosebumps, and Riply is still the perfect example of a strong female character done right.

Alien 3: While I'm still one of the few people that really likes Alien 3, I can definitely see why many hate it, especially as a follow up to aliens. It's definitely a very different kind of movie, but most of all, watching it immediately after Aliens kinda pissed me off like it did so many others. Killing off both Newt and Hicks was a bold, and probably ill advised move on the writer's part, especially after all they'd been through canonically just days or weeks prior in Aliens. It just feel like a giant fu to the fans of that movie. But other than that, I still love Alien 3's bleak, somber setting, as well as how it contrasts heavily with Alien by having no guns or real weapons to take on the single alien in the movie. The CG does feel a tad dated at times, but overall I still really like this one.

Alien Resurrection: I take back what I said earlier; Alien Resurrection was very, very briefly my favorite Alien movie back when it first came out in 1997. I went to see it with a neighbor friend and his parents, and we were both blown away by this movie beyond what either of us imagined. However, the allure quickly faded and has continued to fade as time goes by. I definitely don't dislike Resurrection, but I do recognize its many flaws and issues, most notable how they pretty much ruined Ripley's character by making her a weird, autistic alien hybrid woman who acts nothing like she did in either of the previous three movies. I get why this is, and I feel like the writing does a decent enough job explaining it, but it's still something that bugs me. I do really enjoy the special effects, the cool alien scenes, and the finale of this movie, but it just doesn't do it for me the same way it did when I was 10. I imagine that someday I will likely consider this to be my least favorite of the Alien Quadrilogy, but that day had not arrived yet.

Dandadan - Heard this was going to be a wild new anime and with it on Netflix, I can actually watch it as I don't have a Crunchyroll sub currently, and and boy were people right.  Gorgeously animated, cool intro with music by Creepy Nuts, though I don't know if I would say it's as good as Bling-Bang-Bang-Born.

I also heard that the opening for this show was going to be very awkward, and it is...It's sorta on the same level of like Goblin Slayer, where whatever the show becomes or is, it starts with something super rough.  Apparently the series becomes something much better and moves on from the mood of this, but man it's...not great lol  A very conflicting bit of emotions because the scene actually has great stuff to it.  It's a show that doesn't waist time and it's so goofy that the girl in the show has like this need to fin a boyfriend that reminds her of an old Japanese actor, where I feel like the best equivalent would be like if some girl now was like "I want to date a guy who reminds me of John Wayne or Clint Eastwood" lol

Only the first episode is out, but I'm going to keep up with it as it has some very interesting potential.  I get like FLCL mixed with Mob Psycho vibes from this.
