Not for resale option
« on: January 31, 2013, 01:21:57 pm »
First off I am new to this site. I think it would be a good idea to have a (not for resale) option for games. if you guys do have this and I'm not seeing it sorry.

Some games that were released in a Not For Resale version should be listed as a separate item in the database. For example Sonic the Hedgehog on Genesis was released both Retail and in a Not for Resale pack in. So we have 2 entries:

Sonic the Hedgehog - http://vgcollect.com/item/71
Sonic the Hedgehog (Not for Resale) - http://vgcollect.com/item/9631
Now Playing: Persona 5 Scramble, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Mario Kart 8

Brush Wizard - Mini Painting Blog | The SHMUP: BYOAC Build | Art Thread

I'm personally not a fan of making the distinction. Generally, "not for resale" only applies to games included with a bundle of some kind - Uncharted and MGS4 bundles for PS3, for instance, have this on the back of the games included - and you'd usually want to list that instead. I can see why you'd want to add it if you bought a pack-in title used and on its own, but since that's basically an unofficial release at that point, it seems unnecessary to give it a distinct listing of its own. It'd be like listing loose SNES carts differently than those that still have their boxes, imo.

I would apply "not for resale" to promotional-only items though, like the Assassin's Case release of Elemental Gearbolt, which was a press giveaway and designed to be a distinct, non-retail item.

There are a few reasons why we list them separately:

1. The majority of these games are purchased used and outside from the rest of the original package items.
2. Some of these titles have their own unique item numbers and bar codes.
3. We decided early on that we'd track all variations as separate listing. Some collectors REALLY care about stuff like this so this will cover their needs. If other collectors don't, they can simply ignore them and both will be satisfied.

Hope that clears it up!

I see the point on 1 and 3, but at least with barcodes and stuff, doesn't Not For Resale generally have no barcode as a result? I'm actually kinda curious now if there are ones out there that have different ones than the retail versions o.O

Some don't have a barcode, they may have white space or text where the UPC goes. For example, the games in my PS2 three packs say "Part of a set, not for individual resale". Or they may have a different artwork layout.

Then there's PC games. Bundled versions may not have a UPC, or even a box.

Yeah, that's what I'm used to seeing. I thought you meant like, actual UPC barcodes on promo items and stuff. Which I guess isn't entirely unheard of, either. A lot of promo CDs sent to DJs and radio stations will have just a punchole through the barcode, or even a pen mark, and I could see something similar being the case with games. Disregard my dissent :p

The Nintendo NFR Gamecube games have a barcode, too.
