Author Topic: "Limited Run Games" is Producing Physical Copies of Games in Limited Quantities  (Read 198865 times)

Five minutes after and they sell out? This is why I don't like this publisher. It's a scalper's haven I'm sure.

Yep, some assholes that are in a facebook collecting group I belong to are bragging about getting several copies using different accounts in order to flip them. I fucking despise scalpers so much.

That's awful... I'd be tempted to report those people to LRG in hopes that their orders get cancelled. Why even belong to a collecting group if you're out to screw over actual collectors  >:(
Word.  I would definitely report them.

I'm going to. And I would only loosely call them collectors, more like 80% scalpers/resellers, 20% collectors.

I'm only in two facebook collector's groups at this point because they were all a bunch of reseller/scalper groups.  It got pretty bad during the amiibo craze.

The 2 I'm in, I never see folks selling stuff like this, shoot, I rarely see folks sell, mostly just folks shooting the shit.

So did everyone here get a copy that wanted one?

I got mine with no issues. Now I have a couple of weeks to debate whether or not I wanna grab Volume. Have they said what else they're releasing in Nov.?

I only wanted Risky's Revenge, so I'm all good. The 3DS version of Pirate's Curse made the perfect travel companion. I finished it in about 7 hours.

Volume has been delayed by one week. From their twitter.

Unfortunately, due to a final last minute delay on the gold foil cover we have to push our release of @VolumeGame to November 11th. The games are already en route to us from Sony so this date can be considered 100% final.

They've also added a countdown to Volume's product page.

Every single release had copies held back.

Shadow Complex had 500 copies held just for Epic Employees if I recall correctly.  100 copies held for LRG.

Shantae had a similar thing I can't recall how many copies were held back for LRG and Wayforward.

But I know for sure LRG holds back many copies for themselves or to giveaway or to sell at conventions.

I don't recall what the profit share is, I think it is 70/30 or something with the majority going to the developers.

Ugh, could I just put a rant in here for a quick sec? This has been bothering me for a while, but I just really don't like LRG or their business model. I get and respect that people here are collectors and gamers and want to actually own/play these games, but the scalper scene that this whole project is creating is driving me crazy.

I just watched a mini-documentary from My Life in Gaming, and the co-founder of LRG even said that people will send him emails to cancel their orders if the game doesn't sell out in 24 hours. Then, in 36 or 48 hours when the game eventually does sell out, people will email him a second time telling him to disregard the cancel request. Now, why on earth would people do that?

It's because scalpers and re-sellers aren't interesting in investing in something that won't sell, and LRG knows that this is happening. Then these games all get posted on ebay for 3x as much as they were originally because scalpers know fully that that's the ONLY way you can buy the game after it sells out online! They're preying off what we desire as collectors: physical copies.

And it's barely about "preserving" games in physical quantities, in my opinion. In 10, 20, 30 years from now, these physical copies could become just as inaccessible as if they were never even made in the first place, because of availability and pricing.

I mean seriously, does anyone like that a GameCube component cable is worth $200? Or that Panzer Dragoon Saga is worth $800+? And keep in mind, they made 20,000 copies of PDS! It frustrates me that I'm forced to spend the money now when I don't even have the funds or a PS4, because if I don't buy it now, that's it. It's nice now because we can still buy the games, but what if you get into collecting years from now? You'll be SOL.

/end rant  >:(

Unfortunately that seems to be an issue with scalpers rather than LRG. I know a lot of folks don't care for their business model, but is there something that would work better? Doing an open run that then closes forever takes a lot of time for both the publisher and developer and could prevent them from getting out more titles to collectors.

I guess I just wish they would make more copies of the games. In the scope of game production, their numbers are miniscule; I really don't think they have to be that small. That's why the scalpers charge so high on the other end, and that is something LRG could try to implement. They don't have to make 50,000+ copies, but a little more would be nice.

Ultimately, it is their own company and they can do what they want. But I still don't like it, haha.  :-\ If a different company released games with this low quantity, we would call them mad for doing so! But LRG gets a free pass.
