Spelling Fun 1 incorporates educationally recognised techniques for effective spelling learning, in two very enjoyable and highly imaginative games for learners of all ages. Castle Spells is styled as an adventure game in simplified form. Imprisoned in the graphically represented Spellbound Castle, an threatened by the noxious and unpredictable Spelling Serpent, learners must spell their way through the chambers of the castle, building their spelling strength and searching for the Key of Gold, and their freedom. Using a computer-aided variation of the tried and true "look, cover, and spell" strategy (and aided by a map of the castle), learners are able to pass from chamber to chamber and ultimately gain possession of their objective, hidden in a high tower room. Crystal Spells gives the learner a magic wand that will restore the letters missing from words. (Again, the handywork of the evil Spelling Serpent!) However, the magic can only work on a correct letter, so the learner must choose it from a confusing array of likely and unlikely choices. In an exciting race against the shrinking crystal clock, the user is encouraged to refine an awareness of the visual characteristics of words and to recognize spelling patterns. The proven effectiveness of this package as a spelling tutor is a result of its capability in both games to load appropriate spelling lists simply, quickly and reliably. 75 pre-set graded lists are provided with an easy-to-use editor which allows for the storage of 24 more. This package is highly regarded by educationalists and by practising teachers, but its suitability for the broadest range of levels of spelling skill and its high interest make it particularly appropriate for home use. |
