Flash carts such as Everdrive are considered to be Unofficial Release and not Homebrew.

Models
The black model has three main versions and can be differentiated by the Game Gear logo on the front of the unit to the left of the screen.

Sega Game Gear (RGB)
Majesco Game Gear (gray)
Samsung Handy GamBoy (RGB)

As with other Sega products of the era, the specific consoles have a "Made in" text on the back of the unit with the exception of the Majesco model. The country that the console is made in should match the country that the box is made in.

For example, the US release that includes Columns has text "Made in Taiwan" on the box and the label on the back of the Game Gear itself will show model 2110 Made in Taiwan.

All Game Gear consoles and games are Region Free and are interchangeable. There are no NTSC or PAL systems or games.

Distributor and Import Labels
Some consoles in Europe may have a TÜV Rheinland label on the back of the system.

Packaging
The front covers for releases in Brazil use a design similar to Sega Master System but using grey instead of a white grid background, later losing the grid portion on the top and then ending with a pink/purple border design.


Rating
The earlier releases do not have a rating, and the newer ones use Tec Toy's rating system.

Item Number
Item Number is on the back cover and is called Modelo. This is a six digit number that may have a . in the middle. Put all six digits and the period (if present) into item number field.


Barcode
The earlier releases do not have a barcode on the back.

Description

Price Letters
The prices in Brazil are represented in the form of letters with a circle. They are printed on the cover and may be on the front, back or spine.


Carts
The carts have their own label unique to Brazil. The cards from the grid type box have the Tec Toy logo on them, and the ones from the pink box have a similarly designed label.


Manuals (Manual de Instruções)
The manuals are black and white and their design will match either the grid or pink box type.

Packaging
The vast majority of titles use a gray grid design to the cover, while some publishers may use different types of designs. The budget re-release line is known as Classic or Classic Game Gear, while Kixx also re-released some games themselves.


France
Some games were released in a blister pack. It is currently unknown if all games were released this way.

Cartridges
A fair amount of carts from early releases have identical labels as those releases in the US. In reality this means that a loose cart of those types of releases could be added into your collection as either the US or EU version. Whether a game as the same cart in US as in EU is determined on a game by game basis and there is no easily cheat-sheet to add into this guide. The label style of these releases have the player number indicator and the item number.

Early game releases have a color manual with the grid artwork on the left, while later releases will use a black and white manual.

Packaging
Nearly all official releases in Japan either have a red triangle on the front cover or have a red rectangle on the left side. Another release type is the one called Kids Gear.


The budget re-release line is called Meisaku Collection and is similar to the red triangle box design except that it has a black background with gold text triangle.

Packaging
There are two main (known) box types for Korean releases. They are silver box with a banner with Sonic or with the ??? character.


The Korean text on the stripe is:

Cartridges
Official release cartridges will have the game title in Korean, as well as the game's item number and Samsung's logo in Korea. The cart shell may be in black or white and have a Samsung stamp on the front instead of Sega.

Packaging
The standard packaging is a cardboard box with cardboard hangtab. There are three main designs to the cover, Game Gear with red line under the logo, Game Gear block design and then the purple striped design that matched Sega's other console designs of the time.


Majesco Re-releases
Majesco re-released many titles and typically the differences in packaging is the Majesco Sales logo on the front or back cover, or the card label. Also any game that was initially released with a VRC rating will have an ESRB rating instead. The exception to this is the Sonic 2 re-release.


Cartridges
As with all Game Gear cartridges, they are region free, and as with the EU post above, the earlier releases in US and EU typically use the same cart. The label style of these releases have the player number indicator and the item number.


Nearly all cartridges will have the Sega logo stamped onto the front, with the exception of Pac-Man which can be found with both a Sega and Namco stamp. Most bootlegs will have a blank space or GAME stamped into this area.

All of the original Game Gear cartridges use a security screw on the back, but the Majesco versions have a philips ( + ) screw instead.

Chinese releases go into this category and the Game Gear releases for that country have a box design reminiscent of late Mega Drive Asian Specification or even Mega Drive games from Brazil.


Release Type
Bootleg releases of SEA or unknown origin can get entries into this section. Like all bootlegs, they should be set to Unofficial Release.

Official releases may have an Asian Version logo or label on the front of the box.


Australia
The Game Gear appears to have had a very limited release in Australia, to the extent that only 1 console release is suspected but not confirmed, and only 2 games are verified. These games will be in this section until more information can be found.
