Author Topic: Dating A Video Game Character = Cheating? [GTA 6 MEGATHREAD]  (Read 36 times)

As GTA 6's release window approaches. And the hype builds. I will edit the title of this thread to consolidate all future articles, controversies, opinions, gameplay and hype of the game. As it will prob be a large spectacle among gaming. So if you have GTA 6 gossip or opinions. Feel free to share!  Code in box? Online? Not impressed? Best game ever? Share away.

But first I wanna tackle a topic hot off the press lol. I assume I know what consensus will be on a collector/gamer site such as this but I'd still hedge curiosity of 1. How do you feel about this outrage and more interestingly 2. How would you navigate a non gamer partner having these concerns?

But to summarize shortly. Women accross the country have been made aware of certain dating elements with the character Lucia in GTA 6.  Which supposedly include taking her shopping, for dinner, answering texts, being attentive.  This has led women to draw a line in the sand and verbatim say "he's gonna treat the game girl better than he treats me" leading to jealousy and ultimately boundaries.   And while some of these are made for the sole intent of stirring drama. It has gotten big enough that even IGN has covered it. And my personal gf has been made empathetic to the cause.

GTA 6's Relationship Mechanic Is 'Cheating' on Your Real Life Partner and Break Up Worthy, According to Angry Spouses https://share.google/2txqlJaq0MP7owDcZ

How do you personally feel about full blown sexual dynamics that sort of emulate a genuine sexual couple within a game?  Do you think it's immoral to enter the fantasies that directly when you have a partner? Would you be upset if your partner developed feeling esp romantically to a character in his/her game?

My stance

My main stance is that these elements aren't really new and I sort of don't grasp the outrage. In GTA IV. You have a phantom woman named Michelle calling Niko all the time to go bowling, and you oblige to keep morale up with her as it gives alternate plot points and possibly achievements for doing so. But does that mean because I dont take my real life gf bowling as often that I love Michelle more?  To break down the lunacy in that requires remembering that one is a real life human and the other is a sprite on a 720p tv from 2007 and all of the "affections' come with clear plot premise involving a secondary person (Niko) and has almost no direct attachment to the players actual feelings. This goes back to non gamers not being able to separate a gamers real life from his made up worlds.  I also kill, murder and steal in GTA 6. But have no desire to irl.   So this seems like a policing on fantasy.  And girls certainly have their own in the form of erotica, rom series and their own protagonists like Nathan Drake.

As for being attached to Lucia. In the sense of being sad if she dies or wanting her happy. I'd say that's completely normal in interactive art forms. Games are immersive tools and Jason is not the person playing as him.  Id ask some of the outraged people who play Uncharted or Witcher or Sims or Last Of Us or titanic or bridgerton if they didn't cry when a main character dies or a heartbreak occurs.  If they did why?  Attatchment.  Invested in that character. Game characters effect us. It doesnt have to be "oh man I want Lucia" on a replica AI level. But it's no different than a movie.  Art. Or book.   Its extremely silly to even be having this topic in 2026

This seems like a social media formulated way to cause gender divides and controversy and most of all to be very hypocritical and controlling.  I personally think this is one of the silliest trending topics in games in quite some time.

But what are your feelings?

Rules for the GTA 6 megathread

1. No spoilers

2. No spoilers

95% of online drama, especially when it relates to some trending media property feels completely fake and artificial. Sometimes it's the company who owns the IP astroterfing or shilling to create interest and likes around their media franchise to fuel the algorithms, and other time its some social media grifter looking for the next viral hot take that will get them notices or pay them dividends from ad monetization. In short, the internet, especially social media is so fake and contrived I wouldn't put much stock or mental energy in any controversy surrounding GTA6.

As for the topic at hand, sure, I wouldn't be surprised if there are actually women who feel insecure about a fictional character being played by their SO romancing another fictional character. However, 99.999% of women probably don't care or are completely oblivious to it. I think if your wife, girlfriend or whoever is getting legitimately jealous about a video game character, both her and your relationship likely have much, much bigger problems to deal with than Jason taking Lucia out on a date or buying her a new outfit.
