Can't say I share the same passion for 7th gen as some folks on here.
however with allot collectors having their eyes focussed on 7th gen I look the other way and double down on the gens I truly enjoy instead 4th to 6th gen and boy did I score some good stuff in recent times  :o

I knew this day would come eventually, but it's still been crazy to me seeing 7th gen take off recently. i feel like Wii got a head start in the collectability race, but it's Nintendo, so it makes sense. It's likely a lot of early mid 20-somes as usual going back and rebuying games from when they were kids. It makes me feel freakin old since I was a legal adult already by the time the 360 came out in 2005. Just thinking about current 7th gen hungry 25 year olds being like 4 or 5 when those consoles came out and it being their introduction to gaming makes me feel like I'm 40 going on 100.

It's almost entirely not related to people chasing their childhood sadly. I wish it was. It used to work in slow linear trends like that. I remember when PS2 blew up.  It was when all the millrnials got jobs and remembered how good Def Jam was. The hobby is sadly controlled by social media trends and hive mind like most of the internet now.  With PS3 It's almost entirely fomo from the store closing announcement and digital fears meeting scalper aggression.  Sony's announcement was directly connected with a giant spike on vgpc for those games. I grew up with Gen 7 and was 10 when 360 released. Those who seek PS3 and 360 for nostalgia have been doing so for years now. Ive been doing PS3 since before pandemic. Mostly cusp babies born in the late 90s.  These new comers are freaking out because you tubers they love are pretending bargain bin games with huge print runs are chunks of Amelia Airharts plane solely because they are "delisted"    Plus the digital only announcement has made a lot of normal non collector folk take up physical media in rebellion.   Its the wild west out here lol.

Another thing worth mentioning is the prices have only ballooned at the tippity top. The classic instagram love darlings lol. Folklore, Puppeteer, Spiderman and Splatterhouse.   But the headlines are leaving out that the gen has like 1400 games. The vast vast majority of Gen 7 hasn't budged at all.  For Example Kane and Lynch deadmen.  It was 12 bucks in 2020. And its 12 bucks now.  Even niche games with lower prints like Hyperdimension Neptunia mk 2.  They just dont go crazy.   This is a trend culture thing and I do loathe it but it was inevitable.  And luckily no Kuon level 1500 dollar games yet.

For example last month I bought 262 games mostly Gen 7 and my average Even with bigger titles pulling it up was 8 dollars per game spent.   It's still a really affordable Generation.  It's just the buzzword games people Hawk give a bad impression.  And truthfully a good portion of those are very overrated anyway.   I love love love gen 7.  I think its the most diverse Generation ever. It fed every genre. It peaked on every system.  It was a perfect time where games were pretty to the point of almost being real but gritty and simple enough to still feel like a game.  No mandatory patches and code in box.  Micro trans only came later and was usually minimal.  It was the peak of what humans could create before the beast known as greed reared her ugly head  :(

God, that is so freakin sad, but also that doesn't surprise me. I catalog my collection of Pricecharting and some of my gen 7 stuff has been skyrocketing recently. It's sad that you have to assume that any major shift in price for something, whether it be games, cards, toys, cars, or whatever is part of some inorganic social media grift rather than an authentic increase in interest for these things. I freuently ask myself, "okay, what tiktok or youtube personality hyped this game up for clicks causing to to go from a $40 game to like $200." Parasocial relationships with influencers have ruined so many people. It's really sad.

Directly related to this, I've also noticed how flipping and reselling has become revered rather shunned as it was not even 5 or 6 years ago. I loath the modern Pokemon card scene since it seems like it's 90% about pulling rare, expensive cards, grading them, and then reselling it, rather than any genuine interest in Pokemon or collecting games. It's pretty much this constant ponzi scheme of finding the next shmuck to buy your $600 Charizard card because the buyer thinks it'll be worth $2000 in a year or less. I watched an interesting video a while back about how scalping and flipping culture is more byproduct of the modern economy and gig economy than it is "influencer likes this, so I like this!" Regardless, it's just sad and incredibly annoying imo.

So spot on sadly. Slab culture has ruined a huge chunk of gaming but growing up with Pokémon in the early 2000s makes me hurt so much for these Kids who have to battle grown men treating a card game like bitcoin. What should be a happy "omg you have cool cards. Lets play" culture has turned into some sort of odd venture capatlist arena for scalpers.  And anytime I shame scalpers I get push back it seems.  It was so shunned in this hobby now it's like the big American dream to be a reseller.  Freedom. Yada yada.   Just because someone has the legal right to buy up everything and mark it up doesnt mean its not scummy.  It's being pushed to many state legislations to limit how and when it can be done with real estate, food and water so we're not the only ones who see it is hurting entire markets.

Vast majority of gamers on my socials now don't post "so excited to play this today" its always "paid 120 and its worth 160.  Grail.  Look at vgpc.  I have every rare game" and it's really depressing to the culture of actually loving games.  It makes it harder for us of course but it also limits the people falling victim to it from actually widening their horizons.

But yeah. Sadly the entire 7th gen bubble is a fomo dump. Caused by physical media panic because YouTubers somehow convinced gamers that any delisted game is destined to be impossible to obtain soon.  So everyone had a collective "oh no. Let me get it before its too late" meanwhile the games were already delisted for years now.  And Gen 7 had such insane print runs even for games like folklore.

Not to make you sadder but there is also a trend of market manipulation where ebay sellers list an item.  Use an alt account or robot to buy it. So VGPC and ebay sold listings register the sale price.  Cancel it. Then relist it. Rinse repeat. So the prices balloon. Ive seen it done myself.  Auctions ending at like 200 dollars over vgpc. Knowing nobody is stupid enough to do that.  I researched why and its sellers bidding or buying their own items to balloon the sold listings so vgpc updates and the market shifts up.  Allowing them to pedal multiple copies for more later.  Its that sick.  Its that corrupted.

Also anytime you go to yard sales, local meet ups and thrift stores now everyone pulls out their phone and goes off vgpc too. Like sweetheart you dont have shipping costs, 15 percent merchant fees, 1 dollar listing fees or buyers remorse penalties to tend to here.  Why on earth would I pay ebay prices and not just get it on ebay in the comfort of my home? Lol.   Can't make this stuff up.

Also good will and savers using vgpc to charge full retail and they get the games for FREE!!! Talk about charity lol.  Its disgusting.

A lot of combining factors are hurting our hobby and world. But we prevail!  I do wish new collectors would speak with their wallet but they seem to pay whatever.

That is so incredibly depressing. I am so grateful I started collecting back in the late 2000s and by the late 2010s I was more or less done. It felt way more genuine, like I was among people who actually cared about these games, whether that was strictly as a collector or as someone who actually wanted to play the games they were hunting down. Resellers and scalpers were essentially seen as villeins who were taking games away from actual gamers and collectors. It was a completely different culture back then and while the days of insane flea market deals or getting a lot of A+ N64 or PS1 games off Craigslist for a few bucks are long gone, I'm just happy I was there to experience it. From what you described and what I've heard recently, it sounds like the antithesis of what it used to be about, like some sort of bizarro inversion.

Tbf you only have 2 options you either join and play the game or go cold turkey emulation and or whatever is available digitally/ mini console

the ones that are left the minority prob either tons of nostalgia or love to collect. aka more investment in what they want. and especially for allot of the older stuff in great cib condition often not great supply to flood the market.

Famicom:
Abadox: Jigoku no Inner Wars
Salamander

Sega Saturn NTSC-J:
Gradius Delxue Pack (Sealed)
Virtua Stick Pro HSS-0130

Nabbed few Famicom games and another sealed Saturn game since the last thread. I want to have all the Konami Deluxe Packs on Saturn sealed. I'm only missing Parodius Deluxe Pack, no luck finding a copy yet. Keep filling out my Famicom collection as well. As expected, finding CIB Famicom games in presentable condition at a fair price isn't too common so its slow going.

Hardware wise I finally acquired a Virtua Stick Pro HSS-0130 in box for less than the loose price on PriceCharting. The box itself is beat up, but the controller is in great condition with no yellowing at all. Intend to do some light modifications to it in the distant feature, otherwise it feels great stock. Its now my go to controller for any Saturn arcade game.

if you thought our cardboard was fragile, famicom definitely be in a different dimension. Those are some trash tier boxes even among the japanese it will often be beat up. it's a good thing super famicom and up have more sturdy cardboard comparable to western snes.

I'll say this though as shit as the condition of famicom cardboard is at least prices are still pretty low for famicom.

The Japanese tend to take better care of their games and hardware, if photos in listings are the metric to go by. It's just one example and there are outliers, but I likely would've never found an HSS-0130 for $500 in the condition it's in from a western seller. Every listing I've seen over the years typically doubles that price. Just for the controller itself, often in an objectively worse condition.

I'm a bit picky about box condition (and a game's condition overall) and will pass on listings if the photos don't convey enough detail, or show enough damage that it becomes intolerable for me. For Famicom CIB, I've made an exception, as the odds of finding pristine condition games for reasonable prices are very slim given the circumstances. You're absolutely right that SFC boxes have held up much better over time. I've always preferred them over SNES boxes for their looks, durability and often lower prices in comparison.

It's still fairly cheap to get into Famicom if you're collecting loose games. I don't collect anything loose and the sump tax is always present, so progress isn't fast. The next set of Famicom games I want to own is the Ninja Garden trilogy. The CIB for those games isn't ludicrously expensive yet, so for now I'm simply waiting for a good deal to pop up.

I see allot of cib famicom games including good exclusive non text heavy exclusive games that are like less or around 2K yen with nice condition boxes. that's pretty cheap imo. especially considering the condition is often pretty trash tier still quite cheap for nice examples that are still tricky to find. but obviously even famicom has pricy stuff but it does feel allot less pricy compared to the sfc.

still it makes sense why western sellers would sell for higher considering they probably had to import it with pricy shipping and import fees and there would be less out there of said item compared to where it's from. japanese retro supply vs western one is on a different lvl. and while it's definitely not what it used to, it's kinda crazy what still flows there in Japan.

Do you mind telling me where you find those kind of Famicom CIB games for <2k yen? I normally get my imports through proxies like Buyee and Sendico and I don't recall ever seeing games in that condition for <10k unless it's shovelware to pad out a collection.

It's understandable western sellers need to sell higher to recoup their losses. Depending on what you're buying you're essentially paying for the convenience of not having to deal with import fees. In my experience most listings take this to the extreme and charge way too much for too little. Honestly regret not getting to imports sooner, as most of my best deals in recent memory have come from Japan.

I also look at the usual market places proxies got acces to. i personally however try to scoop up stuff at the lower end, lots and or mispriced stuff however. even really rare stuff can go for multiple times lower what the regular japanese market is with good timing.

that being said exclusive fun imports like atlantis actually go for like 2k yen in cib great shape which i personally wouldn't call shovelware, there are imo quite allot of these kinda cheaper games on the famicom. 10k defo pretty high imo but i guess it depends what kinda games your looking for and wether you could scoop stuff up in deals or at the lower end. Normal prices could be high but famicom definitely seems lower for quite some games imo. way cheaper than sfc and such but all consoles do have their pricy games however.

still in terms of imports, people often don't really sell imports to just recoup fees often you could in some cases pay multiple times more than what it goes for in japan and sellers will look at comparable listings in their region. plus proxies don't come withouth risks if you get scammed you have less protection compared to buying it in your own country plus shipping takes a while especially when you don't want to break the bank. but really you could score japan deals in the west if your lucky depending on the buyer, some get out of it while being happy to recoup them costs especially if those where old prices and thus dirt cheap today. but ye the import fees especially for items that ain't imported all that much go beyond just import fees and shipping. the more of a certain things are imported the less the difference will be, a great example are pokemon cards with little diff in quite some cases. another thing to consider that certain rare games that go for x amount normally aren't always available at those normal prices. with far higher listings being left over so it can be tricky to get certain games at those prices with normal japanese market aswell at times. it also depends what item they are selling, text heavy games could end up being even cheaper in the west cause most people don't want them while desirable non text heavy exclusives are the main ones that really get a sizable import diff.

personally I wouldn't say it's too late to collect japan titles. deals defo be out there and japan titles have not gone up as hard as western titles in terms of %. it also helps that the yen is really weak atm as in close to a 50% value drop considering the yen had 100 to 1 euro value at times 10+ years ago.

Switch:

Taboo Trial: Twilight Edition
Mario and Luigi: Brothership
Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince*

You may notice an asterix by the last one. I bought a "renewed" copy listed as Refurbished-Excellent. When it got here, it was just a loose cart with no case. I don't know how any can with a straight face list a loose cart as Refurbished-Excellent when it for damn sure isn't in excellent condition and you didn't refurbish anything!

Well did the cart have lable damage or scratches one could see in the light? cause last time i checked switch carts generally pretty durable and thus pretty easy to get in excellent shape you gotto do some serious stuff to it before it degrades to good or worse condition. and while not complete you could list the cart as excellent in terms of cosmetic physical shape. Just cause it's not complete doesn't mean it can't be listed as excellent condition when it's main component is in great shape.

also any store or seller that uses refurbished in their listings, you will often not get real pics and you will most likely not get a complete copy unless you ask for it or unless it's noted in the description. if you care about completion you don't buy from people that use refurbished. Most people that buy from them often just care about it being usable. and if it's main component is in great shape they didn't lie. common practice for these kinda stores in my experience. gotto really watch out when people use that kinda language if you care about packaging being with said product

When I started collecting, the case used to be considered part of the product's condition. You'd never see caseless PS3 or XBOX 360 games rated any higher than fair condition, because it was understood that the case was part of the product. I really hate what the used market has turned into. Too bad Gamestop got greedy and turned into a shell of its former self as a result, they used to be an amazing place to buy used games. I think I bought more games from them than I have from any other physical store. Now if you want used you have to buy online most of the time, which has basically turned into gambling these days. Anyhow, lesson learned, I won't be buying refurbished copies anymore. I couldn't return the cart because I don't have a printer right now and couldn't print a return label, so I sold it and ordered another copy from someone else (new copy this time because I'm done taking chances).

especially with cardridge non disc based systems it's quite a normal thing. switch games especially in store settings even if it's just cart only that's all good to em you don't need a case to keep the game safe. if it says refurbished and no pics. ask beforehand to avoid these kinda issues. cause high odds you'll just get the cart otherwise.

if you where buying from gamestop you where probably just lucky to always get boxed copies that store in particular is known to even send people disc only from day 1 for used copies. but if you got a store nearby ez returns so there is that.
