Game Gear LCD screen
« on: November 11, 2012, 11:33:49 pm »
I bought a Game Gear today, and when I tried it out, the screen was blank. I tried multiple games, and nothing. I noticed the contrast slider on the side, and it helped a little, but unless I tilt the console at an extremely awkward angle, it's unplayable. I read online that you can take apart the system, detach the capacitors in the Game Gear, and solder on new ones. I was wondering if I should try this, and was hoping someone could let some insight on this.

Unfortunatley, my first gamegear I bought a couple years ago had the same problem and it's kind of a bitch to fix, I would honestly recommend buying another one thats works

Yep bad capacitors...

You can also replace the LCD screen completely with something more modern or add a TV out to your GG.

It's kind of an old thread, but I wanted to say that if you are a little hesitant to change the capacitors, don't start with a new screen or tvout. They take some decent soldering skill. The capacitors you can get away with some glopping of solder. However, this won't fly on the video mods. Very small solder points.

If interested on seeing the trials, here is a video of the person who installed the video out for the GG for Mike Matei of Cinemassacre. This guy also made the Nintoaster for James Rolfe of Cinemassacre.

All of this work (and the above for cinemassacre) came from the work of a few people (special props to Xavier) from the SMSpower forums. His design, with a few design improvements were made into a community circuit. These are the boards you want, he also sells capacitor kits

If anyone decides to go this route, smspower is a good resource.

For video capacitor repair, htimreimer provided very good links. To get another style, in case someone gets stuc on something, I also suggest looking at Stig's tutorial. He is a really nice game gear collector. Recently sold his collection if I remember correctly.
