What Was The Last Movie/Anime You Watched?

Grave of the Fireflies - The misery on display here is so bureaucratic and mundane making it feel so much more real than if it were over-the-top suffering for every moment. So many people had to be complicit for it to shake out like it does. Purely disgusting. Which makes it that much harder to watch - especially these kids are still doing anything to find a shred of happiness mired in all that disgust, that is then amplified by the fact that the movie tells you their fate up front.

The Cheyenne Social Club - This was really fun and cute. The story is kinda all over the place and there are some plot lines that just disappear, but Stewart and Fonda (especially Fonda) are charming enough to make it work.

Ocean's Twelve - Fun sequel for the most part, but man the whole Julia Roberts / Bruce Willis bit drags it down. I think it could work in something a little more silly. This movie is definitely breezy, but it isn't silly. Not a big fan of the major heist and its twist, either.

Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In - 50% Cyberpunk 77, 30% Streets of Fire, 15% Kung-fu Hustle, 5% John Wick.

Evil Dead Burn - It really is the best and most consistent horror franchise of all time.

Tomorrowland - Technically impressive, but ultimately pretty forgettable.

Nobody 2 - Had a good time with this. I was actually enjoying it more than the first until the third act when it gets kinda generic. Leans more into the humor this time, which I liked, but understand why folks didn't.

Mickey 17 - This was an oddball movie.  A black comedy scifi movie where Robert Pattinson plays a real goofy guy who just has a never-ending terrible life.  Part of me likes it, it's very over the top with the characters, it's abit like movies from the 80's/90's, like Robocop, Running Man, or maybe now that I think of it, something like Fifth Element, abit, but I don't know, something about it never quite hits home for me.  Pattinson and Mark Ruffalo in particular I feel like they do the best here, Pattinson as this very weak willed guy and Ruffalo, this extremely performative politician turned colony leader who plays the skeezy politician well.

It's overall fine, and not sure what I wanted out of it, I think when it became less about a system abusing Mickey and I sorta thought it was gonna be more about like Mickey trying to fight back against the situation he is in as an expendable person, a lab rat to perform unethical experiments on, maybe more mutiny style, but it goes in a very different direction. 

Primitive War - I tried to watch this, got about a half hour, kinda when it's about to take off, I just couldn't take the characters to find out if there's anything fun enough going on with the dino's in this.  It's just endless cliche's lol

B-movie slop like this I feel doesn't work as well these days, at least to me, because movies are so visually clean now, so it doesn't have the grit and vhs or even dvd quality to kinda hide stuff better.  This isn't a super cheap movie because they have a lot going on in terms of like sets and, extras, maybe not the worst action, but because of that, it doesn't have the novelty of a bad movie, but it's also not good enough to be decent action schlock like War Machine.  Maybe it gets more interesting when the dino slaughtering kicks in better, but I just couldn't listen to any of these characters talk.  Some Russian guys show up and sounds like the least convincing accent and that was it lol

Navajo Joe - Very propulsive flick that looks great and sounds even better, but you've also got a totally disengaged Burt Reynolds covered in bronzer at the center of it.

Scream 7 - Yeah, it is the worst of the franchise, but until the third act I was having an ok enough time. The new characters are all total nothings, but I really liked the most of the stuff with Sid and her family. Definitely the weakest from directorial standpoint, but there are still a couple of decent set-piece ideas, even if the effects are pretty shoddy.

Apex - I think a lot people who are hating on this are doing so just because it is Netflix. It's a pretty solid survival thriller with a couple of solid lead performances and some nice location shooting!

Toy Story 5 - Didn't love it, but I liked it a lot. Excellent decision to make Jessie the main character and bring her arc full circle (even if it is a lot of the same inner turmoil about being left behind). Loved Conan's character. Just something about it felt a little rushed and disjointed. Maybe a hot take, but I think 4 is a little better.

Rebel Moon: Chapter One - Chalice of Blood - Ok, so hear me out. Is it derivative, indulgent, and too long? Absolutely. But I also have to give Netflix some kudos for giving a filmmaker free reign to make something so big, ambitious, and (at least in the DC) violent. I really admire the audacity to try and do something this big from scratch. It's like someone put a bunch of money into adapting a homebrew RPG campaign.

I never watched the PG-13 version, but by all accounts this is a huge improvement, which I have no choice but to believe, considering just how bloody and grim this is. Getting down to PG-13 would gut it.

I think this is my favorite Zack Snyder movie now.

I also watched Obsession recently. I can definitely see why it's popular. Seems bad that it's caught on the way it has though.

I will be seeing Minions & Monsters on Tuesday. Xfinity didn't give a free ticket but they gave $5 off so on Tuesday it'll be like 75 cents. Fair enough.

Your daytime prices at that cheap? I haven't visited the theater in years, and it's been many more since I've seen a daytime showing, but I don't remember prices being that low for probably twenty years or more.

Culturally bad for young men. The guy in the movie isn't portrayed as a bad guy at the start and is just a guy nervous to ask out his friend he has a crush on. This Letterboxd review being one of the most popular says a lot:

I will just counter by saying that I think it is actually a good thing that the movie is highlighting the disproportional level of control that men can have over a woman's consent, even when they don't realize it (just like the lead in the movie).

Silverado - I have 100% seen this before, but I couldn't have told you a single thing about it. Solid cast for the most part (Brian Dennehy is great as the corrupt sheriff), terrific score. Story meanders just a little bit, so you really feel that runtime, but it also allows it to be stuffed full of even more tropes than it already has.

The Adventures of Robin Hood - Not my favorite Robin Hood film, but probably the best and certainly the most important. Absolutely gorgeous technicolor cinematography and production design.

Little Monsters - A pale imitation of Beetlejuice where it becomes difficult to tell if it was a half-assed rip-off or if someone with far less production resources tried really hard. Extra points for being so explicitly directed at kids while also being real fucking weird.

It's Pat! - Not as bad as the reputation, but the reputation is abysmal, so it still washes out at pretty abysmal. The Charles Rocket plot is the only part with any depth or insight behind it. The rest of the movie is rehashing the same set-up and punchline over and over again while the fact that Pat is such an unlikeable narcissist makes it hard to even enjoy ironically.

One Shot - Incredibly tense and impressive for a movie that was shot entirely on your cousin's favorite paintball range.

The Newton Boys - I know that Linklater's whole thing is the chill vibe, but when the archival interview footage of the 80 year old survivors has more fire than your bank robbery movie maybe it needs to be amped up a bit.

The Spy Who Dumped Me - So, I assumed this was PG-13 when I started and was pleasantly surprised when the third f-bomb dropped. It's a bit too long, but the action is clear, the jokes are good, and it's just a fun time.

I Saw the Devil - Korean dramas just love being about 15-20 minutes too long, don't they? The first hour is absolutely riveting and then it spends most of the next 80 minutes hitting the same notes (which are basically a mix of Seven and High Tension) over and over.

On Tuesday it's $5.75 all day with membership. Other days it's $10 in the morning and $12.25 in the evening. Membership is $11.99 and you get a free ticket that doesn't expire and 20% off concessions. Pretty good deal.

I do AMC A-List, which is about $26 a month, but you get 4 free movies a week, free upgrades to large soda and popcorn, and double rewards points.  100% worth it for how often I go to the movies.

Its just movies.  I just wish I could have seen it. I Been on the fence because of the popularity and how crazy its been and perhaps it would have been useful. Well i'll just assume its culturally bad for young men because usually the truth gets silenced lol.   Either way.  Seems to be a well casted phenomenon nonetheless. 


With that said. Seen Moana the other day. It doesnt reinvent the wheel. But its also far more passable than people are making it out.  People are being rather cruel and agist to the rock. The dudes not playing a kid.  Maui is a god. He can be gruff and older.  I dont get the hate fully.  Visually it was nice.

The Odyssey - Nolan remains an absolute master at the technical aspects of filmmaking. I do think that performances here aren't quite as strong as we typically see from him, but that's not to say they are bad. Just none I'd call my favorites of the year, even though the movie tops my current best of 2026.

7 Men From Now - Another winner from BB and Randolph Scott, with an assist from a rarely better Lee Marvin.

Ah. I was expecting something much more thorough and political so I skipped the really short reviews assuming the reason it was removed here was extreme. This review sure gets to the point lol.. I will have to watch the movie soon to form my own opinion of the antagonist. Seems universal that the film is well cast regardless. Thank you for this. This helped my curiosity.  I guess it was removed here because the R word? 



SPLASH - - This film is a blast. A hidden gem from the 80s that has been slightly underrated through time.  It's a intriguing and well pace tale of a mermaid that flushes ashore. Adapts due to a childhood bond. And as you'd expect. Mermaids have their share of challenges interacting with the visceral beastly nature of humans. The movie doesnt take long to pace itself and gets its footing instantly. Which is sometimes lost in modern films. I notice lately the first half hour of movies tends to be the director trying to paint a picture. 80s movies sometimes began with the painting already framed. Instant and quick plot forming. And right into action and fun.


Tom hanks is every bit as funny as he is talented. And the lead actress Deborah is also prerrt good at selling whimsy or the dialect discrepancies between curious mermaid and new York locals.  Its great. And touches into deeper feelings of connection. 

It also serves as a time portal into the 80s. So much cool tech. I love how film are permanent time capsules.

Rebel Moon: Chapter Two - Curse of Forgiveness - What a waste of potential. Went from a relatively fun planet hopping adventure to a stuck-in-one-place borefest. It does get a bit better when the action kicks off, but that takes two hours. Too little, too late.

Violent Night - No particular reason to watch this now, Christmas in July I guess, but I had been meaning to watch it for awhile.  It's goofy action schlock, it understands it's silly, and it embraces that.  It's kinda dumb, but again, it understands what it is.  Action is generally decent, super violent, I like Harbour as this Santa struggling to deal with what the world has become, how the kids are, drawn into a conflict accidentally, but has some fun origins to justify why he's tough as hell.

It's good fun, though maybe better to watch at Christmas lol

I mean... that was just a brutal movie lol.  Like I feel terribly bad for every character involved. And throughout a good portion of the film I felt the accusations towards Bear were a bit overzealous. I see the internet jury all the time. but that changed half way through and now I grasp the scope of the RP angle.  Yucky stuff here. Quite brutal.  Weather it were the toys curse. Or my assumption that Nikki was a bipolar scitzophrenic which turned out to not be true. Either way was a power imbalance. It seemed he often times put his own mirage of a life he fantasized above the reality of what Nikki actually wanted. And I mean.  It shows the fleeting and fickle nature of not only awkward love, consent but possessive tendencies.  It's a tough look into the human nature.  Sadly it's a lot more reflective of real life than we pretend. Which is why its so important to emphasize intent and boundaries early.  This entire movie could have been avoided if he just told her he liked her at the beginning when she asked. I am not pretending that's easy to do of course but man.  What a lot of preventable disaster.   


I also love how it shows him ALMOST buy her the crystal she dropped.  An action that was much more likely to actually serve the girl or at minimum be sweet but he chose the other way. Tiny lessons to trust your heart not self serve.  Which put him in extreme aura debt. Clever "what if" hindsight directing. I love it. .  Like he had some charm. He wasnt all bad.  He even had homegirl that liked him as a fallback.  Its actually crazy to think how this all turned so bad. 


Id say my only confusion is how was her outburst at the party not completely flagged as a mental crisis by the 30 people in attendance. No way irl that doesnt end with an ambulance or cops lol.  There were some plot inconsistencies. But overall nothing major. 


Some of the scenes in this thing were F-ing brutal.... like so awkward my body clenched lol.  There seemed to be no winners in this thing.  Everyone loses.  And I think each character has their own sad tale. 


I mean outside of the popularity and conversations. Inde Navarette gets her flowers.  She's quite dynamic. I can smell a new scream queen on the rise.  What a absolute visceral performance but what isnt be talked about as much is just how stellar her co-lead Michael  Johnston acted.  He really nailed the whole crushing on the popular girl but being wierd angsty ass cat dad thing.  It made me feel sticky and I'm not even there.  Which is sad because many people with social anxieties really have trouble with this stuff.   Idk man.


I will say.  It's sad.

Joe Kidd - Underwhelming considering the talent involved. Biggest issue is that Kidd himself basically has no personality and just floats along in story, and it just isn't a good fit for Clint.

Mortal Kombat II - It's a step up from the predecessor, but not as much of one as it would seem like on paper. I thought the first 30-40 minutes or so are pretty bad, and was ready to be disappointed with the whole thing. It's nothing but rushed poorly written exposition and bad performances from almost everyone.  Luckily, once the movie decides to have a plot it gets way more interesting and engaging. Would have probably been better served as two films, with the first ending with X's death, and the second about the quest to take down Shao Khan. This would have given way more room to breathe to the majority of the actual tournament.  Also, the movie looks like crap.

Paper Moon - Man, it hurts to see how good Ryan and Tatum O'Neal are together here knowing how much of a raging piece of garbage he was to her in real life, because they are magnetic.

Hoppers - This movie is absolutely insane. The best Pixar in over a decade, if not much longer. Creative, funny, gorgeous. Loads of fun characters, absolutely demented world building that goes down a dark spiral to a finale you have to see to believe. The overall messaging is muddled, but it's so cuckoo bananas that I can overlook that.

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace - First rewatch in a long time. Held up better than I had feared. What props it up is a few of things. The big three are the music, the pod race (so by extension, the sound design), and the final duel. Otherwise it is a bizarre mix of a very serious and adult political story that feels even more relevant today than it did in 99, juxtaposed against terrible dialogue, bad performances and the insane decision to make this particular story aimed at children. You can tell George put is heart and soul into this, which makes it oddly endearing, despite its many flaws.

Backrooms - Unique take on horror. I enjoyed it. And it's not torture porn. If you're a horror fan, it's worth a watch.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day - I absolutely LOVED this! The surprise character...did not see that coming. Loved him FINALLY using the classic costume, that mask looked great! And while it was hard to top the epicness of Spider-Man: No Way Home, this was great in an entirely different way. Spider-Man finally felt like the character from the comic, a character that can stand on his own. He was no longer the teen-sidekick looking up to the Avengers. It really felt like you got done reading a well-written Spider-Man comic when it was over.

Super Troopers 3 - Funny. If you like the other movies, you'll like this. I won't say it tops the original, but it's definitely a good time.

We Bury The Dead - It's nice when I can find a zombie film that's trying to do something abit different than usual.  Not that this is super original, an experimental US weapon is accidentally(?) deployed off the coast of Tasmania, wiping out all life with a brain on it, a half million people and all animals and I assume bugs and such, and so basically there's a massive cleanup campaign, with volunteers coming in to clean up the bodies.  Some of the bodies are clicking back on and I feel like they took a note from South Korean zombie horror, where they felt the zombies needed a gross, unsettling, aspect to them, which here, they grind their teeth, like...the most uncomfortable, gross, full jaw clenched, loud, grind.  I say SK, because for them, with Busan, it was the transformation was very violent, with like bone popping and such, it's very grotesque, though I guess it could sorta be seen also like Clickers in Last of Us.  Either way, I hate it, in a way that's a positive for the film lol

They vary in what the zombies do, which I won't spoil, but the movie is about someone trying to find their husband who is almost guaranteed to be dead, but they want to see them, and if they have awakened, to see what comes from that.  Daisy Ridley does a good job, following her primarily in this, I generally liked the whole movie other than like the last teeny bit of the movie, it went weird.  It's not a perfect film, but I thought it worked and it being Australian based added something a little different to it.
