That was a lot of fun to watch! When you're making a level, do you just kind of put in things and build stuff as it comes to mind, or do you work out a theme before you start? :)

I'm not much of a "builder", so the only draw for this game for me personally are the levels that are available.

So far, from web articles I'm reading, I'm hearing that there aren't levels out there with that same level of Nintendo quality. And that the most popular levels are sort of "auto" levels where you don't do anything but watch the level take Mario on an auto-course.

So that doesn't sound too appealing. Is there truth to these reports?

We will definitely be talking about this tonight.

What I will say now is it depends entirely on the maker.

Since you can follow makers I think the only point of playing random levels is to find the makers that build the kind of levels you like to play then star and follow them.

Also your own # of uploads is limited by how many stars your existing uploads get.

I pick an SMB theme and then I kind of wing it but play test a lot to make sure the level is enjoyable and plays the way I want.

I make adjustments to object positioning to take into account  background graphics and try to make layers to give depth. I also make sure every item visible is attainable. Every single block must serve a purpose.

I also game the timer to give enough sense of urgency that you won't be able to do everything in the level on the first playthrough. This provides a reason to return.

I always enjoy returning to a level to explore more fully.

I hate grinding through ridiculously hard levels.

It's these things that separate a good level from a bunch of random crap.

I've made a couple of levels so far.

The first one Koopacalifragilistic I tried to make a more standard level you'd find in a Mario game;



And the second one I just finished a couple of hours ago, which is a Metroid inspired level

I've found it quite easy to build levels, but I'm not enjoying it very much thus far. 

The levels I have played-none from you fine, fellow VGCers-haven't been that great.  There are a lot of autopilot levels that basically you don't move and it shoots you around.  It's entertaining for a bit, but it gets old fast. 

Honestly, to me it's a poor-man's LittleBigPlanet.  But with the general hypocrisy in gaming journalism, a game like LittleBigPlanet 3 with all it offers averages out to 79-80% overall between GameRankings and Metacritic.  Meanwhile, Super Mario Maker with all it's limitations to what you can actually do with it has an overall score of 88-89%.  Yep, hypocrisy at it's finest.

I made a level last night that is a music stage where you run to the right as Ness and it plays some of the medley of Bein' Friends from Mother/EarthBound Beginnings. Some of you might better know it as the theme for Onett in Super Smash Bros. Melee:
