Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City was a disappointment for me. I really loved the Resident Evil series growing up. My favorite was Resident Evil 2 for PS1. I hadn't played RE for years and decided to pick up Operation Raccoon City for my PS3. It wasn't what I was expecting--I ended up playing for a couple hours than returning it. I guess I just miss the old RE; wandering around an abandoned mansion with creatures and zombies lurking around every corner, solving puzzles, etc.

Off topic - Hot chocolate rocks. :)

It rocks harder w/ some whipped-cream on top of it :)

Sorry guys--it's all about the pumpkin latte this fall.

"October babies FTW", indeed  ;)

Which PS1 games are you thinking about?

- Alundra 1 & 2
- Dragon Warrior VII
- Koudelka
- Legend of Mana
- Lunar SSS & Lunar 2
- Myst
- Persona 1 & 2
- Rhapsody
- Riven
- Saga Frontier 1 & 2
- Tales of Destiny 1 & 2

Apparently I should give up the hope of ever owning Brigandine or Valkyrie Profile--my friend laughed when I said I wanted these games. Are they very rare?

It's my birthday today! The big two-seven. Plan to use my birthday cash to add some new games to my collection. On a side note, is it just me or are SNES games kinda pricey? I don't know, I guess I was expecting a $10-$15 price range but all the ones I've found on various used game sites have been $25-ish, sometimes more than that.

*H.A.P.P.Y-B.I.R.T.H.D.A.Y.*!!!

Mine's next Thursday...are you a Scorpio, too...or did you just miss it?

So...What'd ya' get
 ;)

Thank you! Nope, Libra here. But, October babies FTW! I think after a certain age, no one wants to be bothered with purchasing an actual birthday present for you. Which is fine by me as I am thoroughly happy with these birthday cards filled with cash. Got my eye on a whole slew of PS1 games.

shouryuken4u:

I can't believe that I forgot to mention Ar tonelico 1 & 2 to you, *especially* after reading about your preferences & likes :)

I think that you'd like them both...A LOT!

There's also the 3 Xenosaga games, Star Ocean 3: Till the End of Time, and Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits that you might also want to check-out...

*TRIVIA*

In case you didn't already know, there's a PS1 game that's a blend of RPG/Gothic/Survival-Horror called Koudelka; that's actually the prequel to the Shadow Hearts series  8)

I have Radiata Stories, Ar Tonelico 1 & 2, and Star Ocean 3! I got them all recently and haven't had a chance to play them yet. Arc the Lad, Koudelka and Xenosaga are all on my wishlist. :) Do you play any obscure puzzle games (like Catherine or Myst)? I've been looking for those type of games too.

The biggest mmo period is Everquest. I actually played for 11 years myself and I miss it everyday. Been thinking about resubbing up my rogue account and playing again.
There are some other decent ones out there too. Allod is pretty cool. Dungeons and Dragons online is a good game but its content is limited. After my 6th capped out character in as many months, I decided I couldnt force myself to make a 7th character just to keep playing. WoW is always popular. Guildwars is still free and supposed to be pretty nice. Star wars the old republic had pretty good reviews too. There is seriously more MMO options out there than most people can imagine. The only one I tried and did not like was League of Legends. It simply made no sense and your characters are not consistantly yours.

I always hear good things about Guildwars and KotOR I just never had the opportunity to try them. On the opposite end, I only hear negative things about League of Legends so I'll probably pass on that. I must be ignorant when it comes to MMOs since I had no idea how big Everquest was. Everyone I know always gushes about how awesome WoW is, I found it to be just "meh". Thanks for the suggestions!

@shoryukenforu:

I see that you already have/like/played many of the same PS2 RPG's that I have...
...which is cool since the PS2 is my absolute favorite system (*E.V.A.R.*) for playing & collecting RPG's on!

I thought that I'd add a few of my Favorites & "Must-Haves" for your consideration...

P.S./Btw:
"6 hours from CT" / What state are you from?

It's great that you didn't give up gaming after losing your hand. Damn, and here I am with two hands still bitching about how hard games are. I just bought quite a few PS2 games recently. I have 2 of the 3 Shadow Hearts, currently missing the first game (haven't played any of them yet). Disgaea seems to be really popular; they're like tactical RPGs, right? SRPG isn't my fave but I'd like to try Disgaea before I decide one way or the other. Wizardry is on my Amazon wishlist, I need to add it to my vgcollect wishlist as well. I actually added Wizardry just based on the few screen shots I saw and the fact that Atlus published it ( I <3 Atlus). I'm really into the Megami Tensei series at the moment; JRPG + life simulator = awesome. I'm playing Persona 4 right now and it's been great so far. I'm missing Devil Summoner 1 & 2 but have all the other PS2 games in the Megami Tensei series. I just got La Pucelle: Tactics yesterday! I'll have to check out the the other misc games you mentioned and add them to my wishlist. My PS2 backlog is just...impossible. And yea, I'm in MD which is about 6 hrs away from CT I think.

Well, thats the good thing about forums like this. We have a thread dedicated to what other people are looking for. Just add your stuff to it! http://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,1437.0.html

Awesome--thanks!

We mostly add what we already own or are aware of. If something isn't on the site it's because of that.

Of course, that makes sense. Guess I'll start adding then!

You gotta hit them streets, Son!

/died laughing

I have been hitting the streets! Haven't had much luck yet but I'm going to keep trying until I luck up. I haven't seen any of the games I'm looking for on craigslist, but I have purchased from CL in the past. Never been robbed, hooray! The closest Game Xchange to me is in CT and that's a 6 hour drive. There are no stores similar to that in my area either. :/

My personal experiences. First most of my PS1 collection was bought straight off the shelf when it was current. Alot of my PS2 crap was the same thing so no help there.
Ebay: Ive bought quite a lot of stuff from Ebay to be honest. If you watch auctions and stick to a limit, eventually you will win one.
Amazon: I dont use it as much cause nothing is negotiable. I did however send a guy a message once and got him to part out a game to me and it was worth it on both ends.
Thrift stores: Its all a lucky random there. Sometimes Ill see SMB for 9.99 and then there are times Ive found (for example) Die Hard for $1.80, Mt Dew limited halo for $6.99, etc
Garage sales: I personally have never bought anything from a garage sale. I have heard of amazing scores though. I just never seem to be on the receiving end of it.
Craigslist: Ive gotten stuff from there but most people in my area think that craigslist prices should be Ebay + 10%. Its really annoying. I did meet one couple however in my area who just find stuff in storage and I buy it from them. So far Ive gotten a top loader NES, Snow bros, and motor city patrol for $50 total.
Local stores: There is a good side and a bad side to them. Most of them are knowledgable enough on the games that the prices are really not a score. But sometimes their system doesnt get updated and the current high price game goes for next to nothing. My best find was TMNT tournament fighters for $10.95 (their system only recognized the SNES version).
Other forums: Most of my collection has come from Nintendo age/Sega age/here. A lot of collectors (myself included) really prefer to deal with other collectors. I have gotten a lot of great deals so far. :)

As far as eBay goes, I guess I haven't had the patience to bid on an item, instead preferring to either go the "Buy it Now" route or head over to Amazon. Although GameStop can be a bit annoying at times (more than once I've used the Pickup@Store option only to go there and discover the game was not available) I've found a lot of my PS2 games there. Need to hurry up and get what I can since I've been told they are phasing-out PS2 games. There are just no local stores in my area that sell older games unfortunately.

General / RPG vs JRPG
« on: October 14, 2012, 11:29:49 am »
Yes the jrpg is definitely a subset of rpgs. If you noticed my list, I didnt list any of the hack and slash rpg (diablo, baldur's gate, champions of norrath, etc) nor did I mention any of the tactical rpgs (ff tactics, ogre battle, ultima exodus, etc) and there is another kind of rpg that is sort of adventure rpg (Ys, Valkyrie profile, Elder scrolls). There is another type that I basically call pen&paper rpg (Swords and serpents, the AD&D games, etc). They are all differently played types. I love the hack and slack type cause most of them are multi player and thats what me and my buddy do when we get together. I do not like the tactical rpgs as they are so slow and boring for me. Adventure rpgs have their moments. While I consider Ys one of my favorite lines of games of all time, I really did not enjoy Valkyrie profile. Same thing with the pen&paper. I actually am one of the few people that probably really enjoyed Swords and Serpents. Hated the AD&D games though. Its just a personal preference. I will 95% of the time however prefer the jrpg to any other of the subsets. Its what I have played for so long and what I revert back to everytime. If you are a rpg fan in general I do suggest that you give all the subsets a try. It could help you decide which you want to focus on.

(Just commenting on your response in a new topic since I initially asked the question on the intro thread and seems like it didn't belong there.)

I love the RPG genre as a whole although my favorite subgenre would be JRPG. Pen & Paper RPG has never appealed to me probably because I lack the imagination and/or creativity I assume it would take to play that type of game. Currently, I'm addicted to the Megami Tensei series as I love the combination of JRPG and life simulator. Can you suggest any MMORPGs? The only ones I've played are Vindictus and WoW, both of which I became bored of rather quickly.

No I don't have 100+ visual novels in my collection, what I meant (and must have worded poorly) is that until the PC format here has the option to add Chinese and Korean games it'll be about 100 entries short of my actual total because I have 100+ Chinese and Korean region PC games.

I do have a few VNs, but not many (Ever 17, Remeber 11, Eien no Aselia, etc etc).

Sorry, totally misread there. I've never heard of any of those VNs, I will have to add them to my wishlist!

They'd better be games 'cause I've been adding them as I've been going through my collection ^^~

I'm saving PC 'til last though as that's going to be the toughest to add (and until Chinese/Korean regions get added it'll be missing at least 100 entries).

Ha! Good to know. I just thought it was odd that I couldn't find any off of my list. You have 100+ visual novels in your collection? How many are English? From what I've noticed in my search for VNs so far is that only a small fraction get localized in English. I've also noticed of the ones that get localized, soooo many are eroge. Nothing against eroge, but it'd be nice to have some of the more, um, tame VNs localized as well. Oddly enough, some of the eroge titles also release versions that are "family friendly" so you can experience the VN without all the steamy bits, but I'm sure you already know this!

There are about 15 visual novels (PC [NA]) I was looking to add to my collection/wishlist but a search for each one has come up short. However, I did find 2 games but they were for consoles and also JP releases. Are we not counting visual novels as video games or are they missing and need to be added to the database?

First off, Awesome screen name! Me personally I have bought a ton at thrift stores in great shape and generally complete, in fact my entire ps1 ans ps2 collection is from thrift stores, I know sometimes there seems to be nothing there but keep checking eventually they'll get something especially playstation also check different thirft stores in different areas. I can kind of seem like quite the adventure to find things but it's worth it with how much money you save.
If I need to buy something off the internet it's generally for systems that you cant really find things in thrift stores, neo geo, saturn and turbo grafx. Otherwise I say keep checking the thrift stores and have some patience with it you will find something

I live not too far away from about three HUGE thrift stores and so far, no luck at all. They have lots of games but they are all sports games for some reason. I do intend to keep checking at the stores as I assume some good games might show up eventually. I've paid anywhere from $8 to $25 for PS2 games which isn't terrible but when you're buying several games at once it definitely adds up. So I'd like to find some bargains!
