General / Scariest video game?
« on: September 30, 2015, 09:38:00 pm »
Hi all. I am playing Nanashi no Game and it is CREEPY! The premise is kind of similar to 'The Ring' but instead of a cursed videotape it's a cursed video game. So have any of you played a game that genuinely scared you?

General / Games never released in US/NA?
« on: September 25, 2015, 10:50:34 pm »
Hi all!

I am looking for several visual novels on the DS that were only released in JP. I did a google search to see if any ports were released in English but all I came across were "English patched" roms. Is there any way to purchase a non-English game and then download an English translation as opposed to downloading an English patched rom? I'm not familiar with these things and have never used my DS to play anything other than US and store-bought games.

Thank you :D

General / Games similar to Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon?
« on: September 19, 2015, 12:16:36 pm »
Hi all!

I've played all the Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon games across platforms. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for similar games. Basically any game that centers around a protagonist completing tasks in a town, something of that sort.

Thanks!

General / How did you choose between PS2 and Xbox (or PS3 and 360)?
« on: November 08, 2012, 01:45:14 pm »
I don't know a lot of people who own both Sony and Microsoft consoles. For me, the PS1 came out first so when PS2 and Xbox were released, I stuck with Sony--then the PS3 and Xbox 360 arrived and I also continued with the Sony brand.

There were very few games I wanted that were exclusive to Xbox/Xbox 360 and I really had no complaints about my Playstation consoles. I did have an N64 though (Mario!) and I also bought a Wii (for family/party games).

Do you own consoles from both Sony and Microsoft? When a new console was released, how did you decide which one to get?

Off Topic / Gamer Parents
« on: October 25, 2012, 08:35:44 pm »
Any gamer parents here? :) I have a 5-year old son who loves Lego Batman and Ratchet & Clank (on both the PS3 and DSi XL). I rarely let him play "adult" games but recently he's been enjoying ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. A question for the parents (and non-parents)--what age is too young for video games and how often do your kids play video games?

General / What is a "hardcore" gamer?
« on: October 25, 2012, 05:40:35 pm »
An acquaintance asked me if I was a "hardcore" gamer and a friend of mine quickly replied "She's not even a gamer--she only plays RPGs". So this begs the question, does the genre of the games you play decide whether or not you are a gamer (hardcore or otherwise)? Also, who would you consider a gamer?

Classic Video Games / Are retro games harder than current-gen?
« on: October 19, 2012, 11:38:27 am »
I ask this because I am getting my ass handed to me in Donkey Kong Country as well as a slew of other SNES games. My PS3 games have not been all that hard with the exception of the notoriously difficult Demon's Souls and Dark Souls.

Out of curiosity, what have been the most difficult retro games for you guys?

Classic Video Games / Was FFIII not ported to PS1?
« on: October 17, 2012, 08:03:12 pm »
I've been looking for PS1 ports of Final Fantasy 1-6 and I've found them for every game except Final Fantasy III. Am I overlooking something or was there never a PS1 port for this game?

General / RPG vs JRPG
« on: October 14, 2012, 11:29:49 am »
Yes the jrpg is definitely a subset of rpgs. If you noticed my list, I didnt list any of the hack and slash rpg (diablo, baldur's gate, champions of norrath, etc) nor did I mention any of the tactical rpgs (ff tactics, ogre battle, ultima exodus, etc) and there is another kind of rpg that is sort of adventure rpg (Ys, Valkyrie profile, Elder scrolls). There is another type that I basically call pen&paper rpg (Swords and serpents, the AD&D games, etc). They are all differently played types. I love the hack and slack type cause most of them are multi player and thats what me and my buddy do when we get together. I do not like the tactical rpgs as they are so slow and boring for me. Adventure rpgs have their moments. While I consider Ys one of my favorite lines of games of all time, I really did not enjoy Valkyrie profile. Same thing with the pen&paper. I actually am one of the few people that probably really enjoyed Swords and Serpents. Hated the AD&D games though. Its just a personal preference. I will 95% of the time however prefer the jrpg to any other of the subsets. Its what I have played for so long and what I revert back to everytime. If you are a rpg fan in general I do suggest that you give all the subsets a try. It could help you decide which you want to focus on.

(Just commenting on your response in a new topic since I initially asked the question on the intro thread and seems like it didn't belong there.)

I love the RPG genre as a whole although my favorite subgenre would be JRPG. Pen & Paper RPG has never appealed to me probably because I lack the imagination and/or creativity I assume it would take to play that type of game. Currently, I'm addicted to the Megami Tensei series as I love the combination of JRPG and life simulator. Can you suggest any MMORPGs? The only ones I've played are Vindictus and WoW, both of which I became bored of rather quickly.

General / Are visual novels not video games?
« on: October 14, 2012, 08:03:32 am »
There are about 15 visual novels (PC [NA]) I was looking to add to my collection/wishlist but a search for each one has come up short. However, I did find 2 games but they were for consoles and also JP releases. Are we not counting visual novels as video games or are they missing and need to be added to the database?

General / Where do you buy your games?
« on: October 13, 2012, 09:56:32 am »
I'm new to collecting, as the subject of my post probably implies. Right now, I'm focusing on PS1 and PS2 games. If I can't find a game at GameStop, then I usually do Amazon. I haven't had problems with either--all the games I've bought have been in excellent condition for used games. I was just wondering if there is a better place to buy games. Am I paying too much at GameStop and Amazon? I've checked thrift stores, pawn shops and local flea markets, and have found nothing. My long term goal is to eventually get all NA released RPGs for the PS1, PS2 and PS3.
