General / Re: Video Game Resolutions and Goals in 2023
« on: December 24, 2022, 02:55:28 am »
1 - Acquire more physical games

If it wasn't obvious my affinity for Epic Games free weekly digital game(s) is apparent. Given that A) I want to own more physical older/retro games and B) That's what this site is oriented towards, it couldn't hurt.

 I)    Breath of the Wild 2 - When the first one came out, I wasn't that interested to be honest. I didn't get more interested in the Zelda franchise until a year or two after. I then proceeded to beat ALTTP , Hyrule Warriors (I know...) and Breath of the Wild. BotW was different. I usually grind through RPGs and max out the characters like all the materia, limits, UWs etc in FF7, but the reward really was something else completing all shrines. Seeing the "full" health bar hud with all blue on the map and a *spoiler* Master Cycle Zero *spoiler* truly felt rewarding. Now, this game wasn't my most played with only around 200 hours IIRC, but out of all the RPGs I've played it may have the most time spent. Naturally, when a sequel was announced I was stoked and now await the release.
II)   More PSP Games - My FFIV copy is lonely and could use the company of the other FF Ports
III)  More PS3 games - Specifically Splatterhouse. I know, the game isn't the finest piece of art but given that the VA of Winnie the pooh is one of the main characters, it makes for a pretty interesting ride. This is also including the fact that the game just doesn't run on RPCS3 yet. Other than that, it's just a matter of acquiring the obvious and simultaneously cheap choices like Killzone 2 that I lack.
IV) More PS2 Games - The specific choice here is .Hack//Outbreak. Already half of the way there to completing the image on the shelf! Other PS2 goodies will follow suit.
 V)  More new games - While I know I just said I was going to focus on older stuff, there's a couple titles releasing soon I want to mention. The RE4 remake will release at some point, and given that I played through it a few times I'm excited. Dead Cells is having a Castlevania Crossover, and the other Koumajou Densetsu (TouhouVania) game will be on Steam soon! I'm also stoked to get the new Crisis Core game, the Terminator RTS because I'm a sucker for that dead franchise, and the Amid Evil Black Labyrinth DLC.

2 - Beat games

I'm also admittedly guilty of possessing a large backlog consisting of Epic/GOG free games, a good amount of physical ones and some other digital goodies. While I don't think I'll have the time for the 52 challenge, I do want to beat some titles such as the Shadow of the Colossus remaster, .hack//Infection, and maybe even Trauma Center: New Blood. Lots of great games to play!

3 - Acquire more shelving

I am quickly running out of space on my shelf at the moment. I've got a little leeway with most of my physical platforms but I'm definitely going to need to get more storage soon. While a minor topic, I feel like storage is a topic not discussed much. While the world has certainly gone digital, for most of us on the website we need a place and way to store what we buy!

4 - Making more content

While the days are only so long, I'd like to make more Youtube content as well. I haven't uploaded a lot of videos or done a lot of streaming this year and want to change that. Given that I have the equipment and now some mediocre video editing skills, I could stream my content (although I plan to get a higher quality capture card) such as the aforementioned New Blood playthrough, on real hardware! Doing that with a hand cam could be lots of fun! There's also a variety of other miscellaneous videogame related content out there, such as a Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia rom hack called Contravania that replaces Albus mode with various Contra characters such as Probotector, Brad Fang, Bill Rizer, and so on. Cool project someone made a reality.

5 - Potentially acquire more Gamecube Controllers

While not particularly high on the budget, given roommates proclivity to drop the damn things on the hardwood floor, looking into replacements will be a necessity (for me) at some point in the future. They aren't shattered into a million pieces or anything, but the Z button on one doesn't work and the other has some other issue I can't remember at the moment. While it may certainly seem like I'm grasping at straws, I like my equipment to remain in the condition I received it in and don't like being that guy that hands you a busted controller. On top of this, given that I'm involved enough in smash bros. for this to legitimately matter, I'll need to address it with plastic or some Andrew Jacksons sometime.

Overall, I'm looking forward to what 2023 brings regarding streaming, gaming, collecting etc. I should be able to acquire some nice picks for my collection in the following year, upload some hopefully interesting content and maybe even hit 800 unique titles!

RPG in a Box (Free, Epic)
Fort Triumph (Epic)
Saints Row 4 Re-Elected (Epic)
Wildcat Gun Machine (Epic)
Shadow of the Colossus (PS4, half off)
Hard Corps: Uprising + DLC
Suikoden II
LEGO® Builder's Journey (Epic)

Unfortunately, I was unaware of the Epic advent calendar until today and regrettably missed the earlier titles. Still, there's more to come!

I hate to necropost but I'd love to see a VGCollect app on the iOS store.

Site Feedback / Game notes not updating in Finished list
« on: December 04, 2022, 02:38:03 am »
I was going through and editing the notes portion of my finished games to include relevant information such as the difficulty beaten, extras unlocked, etc. Unfortunately, these are not saving. Now, don't get me wrong there can always be a level of human error, but I'm certain I hit submit  ;D

Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Same thing that happened to Dead Rising apparently. Now with Resident Evil Re:Verse, it's kinda thrown all of the previously mentioned sci-fi corporate experiment gone wrong type deal. Now it's deathmatch and feels like a worse version of Doom Eternal's online mode.

I watched a video and *spoilers*, when you die you end up turning into a zombie and then Nemesis... and there's like three Nemesis' (idk the plural) in one hallway.

Like what???

This game series actually used to have a crazy atmosphere. I remember playing RE1 on the GamCube and legitimately being unnerved creeping around the Spencer Mansion (granted it was at night, still). They fast n furious'd it by axing everything good and making it about action. Remember when you watched helplessly as Neptune killed your ally in RE1? Replace it with Leon dueling Ustanak or whatever on the rooftop. Sure, the foe is much larger and arguably deadlier, but gone are the clever machinations of our protagonists trying to survive and outrun DOOM.

This is more along the lines of speedrunning, but Summoning Salt has fantastic videos on all sorts of different runs and concepts. From Castlevania world records to the human limit of Super Mario Bros. (NES), there's quite a few interesting videos on their channel that I'd say are relatively entertaining. It's worth noting too that the speedrun videos aren't just a countdown of the records, but rather a progression of their shortening over the years and the history behind the runs.

General / What is your favorite menu theme?
« on: October 15, 2022, 02:11:46 am »
When it comes to what sets the mood and makes a game a game, there's a whole slew of different elements that ultimately make up the experience that is, well, the game. One of these elements I don't hear a lot about is the menu music. From Super Smash Bros. various menu tracks to Deus Ex, there's quite a variety of scores that draw the player in or hype them up.

What are your preferences?

Personally, it feels odd calling anything before 7th gen retro. However, I have been playing some stuff that can be considered retro. Just beat FF3 and 4 along with extra grinding including the superbosses (yeah it's the psp port of 3 and 4 but it's basically the same game). Given that I'm awake and September has ended, I think it's time to get in the October mood with some Castlevania! Maybe I'll finally get around to beating III and Dissonance...

So, yeah. It's not that hard now with the various collections and mid online packages offered by the main companies. Not to mention the forbidden E word...

I hope one day to maybe own copies of these games but highly doubt it...

disclaimer: I'm aware Ebay is not the cream of the crop for buying (retro) games. I'm just using it as an easy reference.

LSD: Dream Emulator

As of this posting it's $600-$1100 on Ebay. Given that it will be a bit before I'm free to just make purchases like that, I'm sure with the game not getting any less rare and rising inflation I just can't justify spending that much on a singular game. As cool as it may be, I don't know if its 1g cool  :P

Pokemon Colosseum Pre-Order Bonus Disc

I've seen a few of these online at a few hundred on the low end. I'm a big fan of the 6th generation but just can't justify that much.

Persona 3 Collector's Edition

LSD DR wasn't bad enough so I wanted to include a game that could be considered financial harm. My lazy Ebay search yielded two results, a CIB opened copy at $500 and an sealed copy priced at $19,999.00 (with $20 shipping). Now, personally this isn't a game I feel I need a sealed copy of, but even $500 is a decent chunk to drop on a game that's only 16 years old. Even if it's an import P3 CE is still more than Path of Radiance.

If it were a game I REALLY liked, I'd do all.

Most of the time though, I try to go for at least a mid level limited edition or something.

I make exceptions for regional differences i.e. tetra trackers in 4 Swords Adventures (JP). Technically not a different "edition" but either way it's still a dupe in the collection.

We already have the forums. I see no point in creating a Discord.

Seconded. It would move communication to another medium and disincentivize forum posting. Not to mention whether or not people would actually use the voice chat which is a large portion of it to begin with.

Classic Video Games / Re: What is the hardest RPG you Ever Completed?
« on: April 03, 2022, 02:50:00 am »
Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne. Spoilers ahead.

I beat it on hard. It was one heck of a time, from the Matador to Mot, cheapness struck, but I prevailed with determination and the fact that it was NG+ ;D
First playthrough was on normal, and it still wasn't easy. Hard definitely still made it difficult to get the ball rolling, but eventually I got money to summon in demons, slowly but surely.
I got the True Demon Ending and my final party included Metatron, Dante, and Trumpeter.

Overall, the game was a solid challenge, given the fact that bosses can do this... https://youtu.be/rhDIDWh84-s, I'd say it's a fair contender for the hardest RPG I've beaten and a difficult game in general.

General / Re: Owning the same title for multiple consoles
« on: April 03, 2022, 02:01:24 am »
I have 41 dupes myself unfortunately... like owning Ninja Gaiden Sigma and the Collector's Edition, NGS2 and 3 on PS3, and then getting the master collection on steam. I also own DMC HD Collection, the 3 pack on ps2 and dmc1 on Switch. The list goes on, I just don't have the heart to throw my gamestop NGS1/2 copies away.

That being said, there's also owning dupes because you like said game. I have some japanese versions of some games, so while still technically "dupes", some offer extra content like 4 Swords on GameCube.

Then there's owning dupes because two different game services offered them free for a limited time ;D

1. Get over 600 games. While I technically own over 600, I have about 20 dupes or so from owning physical and digital copies.

2. Beat currently unfinished games I'm playing such as the FF7 remake and Persona 5 Royale. Maybe even Persona 3 as well.

3. Play more of my backlog and try to get some more perfect games (all achievements) on Steam.

Classic Video Games / Re: Your Thoughts On Modding And Pirated Software
« on: December 22, 2021, 02:48:21 pm »

This little square right here was my childhood. It's the reason I got to play the other two DSVanias, Megaman ZX + Advent, Age of Empires: Mythologies, so on and so forth. While not legal (especially during the DS Lifetime), it enabled me to enjoy a lot of games I wouldn't have otherwise. Hell, there's working NES, SNES, and Genesis emulators made to run on it. While one could argue it's not right, I'm not going to deny how much I benefited from the invention of this technology.
