28 Days Later - Haven't seen this since like 2003.  First act remains an absolute masterclass, and the third act works way better for me now, but it is still a pretty jarring shift in tone.  Mixed results from the SD picture quality.

A Real Pain - Funny, touching, tremendously acted, and barely 90 minutes.  A real triumph.

Predator: Killer of Killers - It looks stunning and it's the absolute best use of the overall premise since the original.  Uses the medium to show some real balls out action sequences that would never work in live action but feel right at home in animation.  It starts to stretch credulity a bit too much by the third act, and the connective tissue aspect that marries the eras together robs a bit of the tension.  I'd watch 2 or 3 more of these, but the basic concept would start running itself dry by then.

Pale Rider - Feels like a more traditional Western than Clint's other works in genre, but it's no less a well-crafted film than the majority of those, either.  Just a little sillier and a little lighter, it's still a very entertaining time at the pictures.

28 Weeks Later - While I liked Days a little bit more on this revisit, I liked Weeks a little less.  Bigger, shinier, and more bombastic, it just doesn't hit on the same emotional level, despite having a couple of sequences that put the first to shame in the horror department.

Popeye - Like a series of SNL sketches where the first one bombed, but the cast loved it, and kept bringing it back.  There are a few laughs scattered throughout, and the cast is 100% committed (obligatory Shelly Duvall shout-out), and the production design is impeccable.  All that being said it's aimless, paced pretty poorly, and the songs all basically dirges that are not helped at all by the piss poor sound mixing.  Handily the worst Altman I've seen, but worth watching at least once as a curiosity.

Austin Powers in Goldmember - Absolutely the worst of these, but was still better than I remembered.  Has a fair number of new ideas, but it also recycles a fair few bits, which was also a major flaw in the second film.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind - The Neary family drama stuff is tremendously acted, but it just doesn't engage me the way the logistical side of things does.  Watching people figure stuff out is one of my favorite things to see portrayed on screen, and this movie does it phenomenally well.

It also looks like a million bucks.  Maybe the most well-shot of any of Spielberg's work.

Got a free month's subscription to Crunchyroll.  Checked out the the Junji Ito Collection and dropped it after two episodes.  Dull and shoddily animated.

Godzilla vs. Biollante remains my favorite Heisei era film, and the Criterion 4K looks great.

The Brave Little Toaster - Sorry, I just don't get the unadulterated nostalgic love for this. Yes, there are a couple of gnarly memorable moments, but the music is mostly bad, the blanket is annoying, and it has no real sense of internal consistency.

Bring Her Back - Absolute heartstopper of a film.  Incredibly heavy and devastatingly sad, while also being the most unsettled I have been in a theater in a long time.

Yeah, Rehersal two really felt like it was saying something in a much deeper way than the first season.  He managed to shine a light on what appears t obe a pretty serious issue while also managing to be touching, irreverent, and thought-provoking.  There is no one like Fielder out there putting in the work today.

Robocop 2 - Bigger and more action-packed than the original, but without the same level of visceral violence.  The satire of the original isn't gone, but it is far more broad, in almost a Saturday morning cartoon kind of way.  Some really great practical effects also make the generally inferior package go down super easy.

True Grit (2010) - Westerns just hit different since I turned 40.  It's just DNA, I guess.  Moved it up several spots in my Coen ranking.

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation - This one is kinda like Teflon for me.  Probably doesn't help that the "big stunt" is in the cold open, making everything afterwards pale a little in comparison.  It's not bad at all, and is still miles better than the second, but other than getting major bonus points for bringing in Rebecca Ferguson (and Sean Harris, too, really) its towards the bottom of my MI list.

Final Destination Bloodlines - Might legitimately be the best film in the whole franchise, but I'm definitely surprised at the overwhelming critical success.  Found myself legitimately moved by Tony Todd's scene, and, in a franchise first, I think I liked pretty much all of the characters?  The effects are a bit overly polished with CGI, making them all feel pretty samey, which is unfortunate because elaborate set-ups are all pretty good.  Also, I didn't really understand how a compound that looked like an elaborate death trap was supposed to be the "safe haven."

Mission: Impossible - Fallout - I don't think it gets mentioned enough how great the pacing is here.  Almost two and half hours long, it goes by in a flash, and doesn't even feel as long as the original, which clocks in at barely over a buck forty-five.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Yeah, the AI bullshit weighs this down, but the set pieces and performances are just too good.  I've been a Hayley Atwell fan since the first Captain America, but man she's just phenomenal here.  And that train... hoo boy that train.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning - It's a mess.  An entertaining mess, but a mess nonetheless.  Weighed down by all of the nonsensical "Entity" stuff in a way that Dead Reckoning managed to overcome.  Total clunker of a first act and a retcon I did not care for.  The underwater setpiece is phenomenal, but the finale is just Fallout again, but worse.  Would easily be the worst of these if not for the black sheep second entry.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol - It's the most Bond like of these with regard to gadget use, which kind of makes it the silliest.  Also seems to have the least individual identity, although that doesn't stop it from being agood time.

I stopped playing World of Warcraft about year or so ago, because the latest expansion didn't really interest me.  Been getting bored during the day, and they had a great deal for the expansion and bunch of game time, so I re-upped mostly just to get through the story of the new content, and I'm finding myself surprisingly into it.

Forspoken was only $10 for the PS5, so I figured what the heck.

Mission: Impossible - Charmingly lo-fi considering where the rest of the franchise went, and what this one would have looked like had it only been delayed by a year or so.  Shame they never went quite this nitty gritty on the day-to-day spycraft again and there's a nervous almost boyish edge to Cruise here that we won't see again.

Mission Impossible II - It's the worst of these, no question, but once it actually gets to the fireworks factory and actually becomes a John Woo movie its pretty fun.

Mission: Impossible III - This is Abrams best movie, and Tom's best outing as Hunt performance wise.  I think there's also a good argument to be made that Hoffman's chilling villain is even more responsible for the franchise resurgence than Cruise.  He's just phenomenal here.

I hit credits on Alan Wake II last night.  It's one of the best looking games I've ever seen.  It does such interesting things with light and shadows.  And on top of that, the story is incredible, with killer voice performances and motion capture.  Unfortunately, while the combat is generally way better than the original Alan Wake it is still pretty clumsy and very slow (along with movement being super slow in general), which was a huge disappointment, because Remedy showed with Control that they can really nail the combat if they want to.  It also doesn't do a great job of tutorializing, which makes the early game learning curve pretty steep and kinda frustrating.  These couple things unfortunately really dragged the whole experience down, which is a shame, because the stuff the game does well it does really, REALLY well.

Like Ragnarok, I'm going to keep the game installed so I can get to the DLC, but I have to put it down for a little while because I was ready to be done for now.

Captain America: Brave New World - It's not that bad.  It's aping The Winter Soldier, but without really understanding what makes that movie so good. It has a total lack of identity and style, but considering all the behind the scenes drama, it came out about as good as can be expected.  Marketing did it a huge disservice in revealing Red Hulk, as you basically know going in what the big bad's plan is.  As a major plus, Carl Lumby is legitimately great.

Thunderbolts - Surprised by how good this is.  Great action, good performances (Florence Pugh is a GOAT), real themes, and humor that is derived from the characters and not just from a quip generator.  It's Guardians of the Galaxy with broken human mercenaries instead of broken alien weirdos.

Armour of God - Doofy road trip comedy stuff doesn't really work and outstays it's welcome, but it's still got that sweet Jackie Chan action.

Southern Fried Lies - Fascinating small town criminal conspiracy stuff, but I did not need to listen to that remorseless narcissist yammer on for 50% of the runtime. I don't care how charming her accent is. There's no telling what else she's gotten away with in that town.

Skeleton Crew is a ton of fun, and Jude Law does a great job at anchoring the whole thing.  Extremely 80s kid adventure vibes, with The Goonies serving as a major reference point.  This is the show Willow should have been.

Final season of The Righteous Gemstones was the weakest overall, but it still managed to be one of the funniest and best shows on TV.

Third season of Dark Winds was really inconsistent, and the mysteries weren't nearly as compelling as the earlier seasons.  I'm still in for Zahn McClarnon, though.

The way Andor has recontextualized not just Rogue One, but the entire Original Trilogy is staggering.  It's the most well written and best acted material in the ewhole franchise, if not always the most purely entertaining.  It's basically the first time you can really see how the entire universe works, and it is so utterly compelling.

Microsoft has confirmed that prices for video game software and hardware are being raised. Some prices are being raised immediately, whereas others will go into effect "this holiday season." In the US, below are some of the items being raised in price being reported by IGN, although here is the official announcement from Xbox which separates information by region.
• first-party games: $69.99 → $79.99
• Xbox Series S 1TB: $349.99 → $429.99
• Xbox Series X: $499.99 → $599.99

It's truly baffling how, in regards to hardware especially, early adopters are the ones who are getting the deal.

I'm genuinely surprised they are even keeping the Series S on the market.  I bought mine brand new for like $150 2 years ago.

Heretic - Hugh Grant is incredible in this, but it's also too long and way too overwrought with pretty underwhelming ending.

National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1 - This cast is ludicrous.  Shatner and Curry know exactly what movie they are in, and Kathy Ireland is shockingly good.  Emilio's fine, but when his brother shows up, even for just a cameo, you kinda wish he was the lead instead.  It's not quite as good as Hot Shots, but it's close.

Hour of the Gun - I've always thought the weakest part of Tombstone is the last act, and lucky me, this is basically a whole movie about that last 30 minutes!  All about the legal ramifications of the gunfights and goes even further into the lengths Wyatt went to in order to get revenge.  Very cool stuff! Tombstone cribbed a ton from this one, too.

The Penguin - The kind of prestige show the MCU wishes it was pumping out on the reg.  Award caliber performances, set design, and especially make-up. Kinda runs out of steam by the last couple of episodes but absolutely sticks the landing.
