Chrono Cross has more ties with Chrono Trigger than meets the eye. The problem was that the developers had a tendency to reference events in Radical Dreamers a bit too much. That's another one of those games that I wish was released on our side.
Agreed. I remember I had a fan translated ROM back in the day. I'm sure it's still kicking around. I should probably finish that!

WH-WHAT?! They have a fanslation somewhere? This is great news!
Yup! I'm at work, but I remoted into my computer at home and found the files. Timestamp says from 2004 so it's been around a while. I'm going to play around with it and see if I can't get it working. My old copy of ZSNES doesn't work on my work computer. I'll have to see if a newer version does.

Due to my computer ineptitude, I may ask for your help in playing it since I don't know a thing about properly patching and emulating things.

Yeah Chrono Cross isn't really that great. It does have a really cool story about parallel dimensions and the choices that we make. The OST is indeed fantastic. It's really the perfect music to set the tone of the game.

There are very few ties to Chrono Trigger which is what was/is so disappointing to fans. The DS port of Chrono Trigger had an additional ending that tied them together better.

I enjoy it, but it's definitely not for everyone. I replayed it around this time last year and appreciated its nuance more this time.

Basically this. Chrono Cross wasn't bad but it was nowhere near capturing the excellence of Chrono Trigger. It was a gorgeous game, had an amazing sound track, and some of the characters were entertaining. But, with over 40 people to recruit that offered nothing to the narrative, very little references to the first game and some really screwy game play features, it was not the experience fans were looking for.

I finished it, got the best ending and never touched it again.

Yeah, I was worried about it being one of those "hyped" RPGs but it's turning out to be a great experience. That said, there are some things that I like more from the first Suikoden. The thing that immediately comes to mind is the castle hideout. The first game had a relatively simple yet functional blueprint. In Suikoden II, I keep getting lost. @_@ The same can be said for some of the towns. Bigger isn't always better. There are other minor nitpicks, too. But, all in all, a great experience so far. I love going to RPGs from the "golden era", especially if they're ones I never got around to playing before.

IMO, FF VII was one of *those* games :-\

You mean it was too hyped for you?

No.

Not so much too hyped but, more a case of my disappointment when playing it, for not living up to the epic & incomparable  greatness; as advertised.

That said, I didn't play it until last generation and - had I played it when it was released - I'm sure that I'd have thought more of it & seen it in another/better light.

I didn't hate (or even dislike) the game...just, IMO, it was a pretty meh (7/10) game.

I can totally understand that. The same thing happened to me the first time I played Chrono Cross. The sad thing is, this was on its release day back in (I think) 2000. I thought to myself, "This...is it? Meh..."

I have to say Suikoden II keeps continuing to surprise me. I really like seeing faces from the first game making a return and the new characters have their own unique quirks. I'm anxious to see more interactions with all of them. I'm glad I'm using a guide though. If I wasn't, I would have missed out on some things already. @_@

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

There's a Tales of Vesperia strategy guide, too. ^^ I forgot about that one since it's regarded as being pretty crappy.

If a game comes with a manual, I always read through it first before starting the game. However, manuals these days lack the pizazz that ones from Square's golden age had. They were a bit a hokey, but they were colorful, detailed and informative. *sigh* I miss the days of Squaresoft.

Playing hard to get is fun!

But when you're being played...it's not so fun. XD In other news, my Mana collection is complete! Secret of Mana arrived today. For the first time, I got to read through the instruction manual and see the gorgeous map that was included. They just don't make games like they used to anymore.

I wish I had better news, but I haven't heard from him lately. I've barely been on GameFAQs.com myself unless it's for something Suikoden II related.

Off the top of my head, these are the games that have guides in the series:

Tales of Eternia (Destiny II here in the states)
Tales of Symphonia
Tales of Legendia
Tales of the Abyss
Tales of Xillia 2

Hearts doesn't have one, but I'm sure someone will make on something like GameFAQs at some point.

Successor of Hope...where to begin with this one. Well, it was dry. Very dry. I got to the third chapter before I thought to myself, "This...is really boring. Why am I reading this." So, I wasn't a fan. I'm not sure if it was a sequel or a prequel, but either way, I didn't like it at all.
