I'm new to collecting, as the subject of my post probably implies. Right now, I'm focusing on PS1 and PS2 games. If I can't find a game at GameStop, then I usually do Amazon. I haven't had problems with either--all the games I've bought have been in excellent condition for used games. I was just wondering if there is a better place to buy games. Am I paying too much at GameStop and Amazon? I've checked thrift stores, pawn shops and local flea markets, and have found nothing. My long term goal is to eventually get all NA released RPGs for the PS1, PS2 and PS3.
-
I usually go around to all the local used game shops near me every couple of weeks. I also will go he Amazon or eBay route on occasion, especially for Saturn games, which are hard as hell to find here. I've heard some folks have good luck at garage sales, flea markets and pawn shops. But I work on the weekend and miss out on garage sales/flea markets.
Also, welcome to the site!
-
shoryuken4u here is a tip:go to a thrift store you will find ps1 and ps2 games there and that's ware i get most of my games from

Welcome to the site, shoryuken4u!
Your preferences are very much like mine (PS1, 2, and 3 RPG's).
My local Gamestop's are already phasing-out PS2 games, so soon, you'll only be able to find your PS3 ones there.
I've had some luck at garage sales , pawn shops, and "buy 'n' sell anything/everything" places.
Almost w/o exception, you'll pay the highest amount at Gamestop.
As you frequent these stores, make friends w/ the workers...and do like I did...ask them to call/e-mail you whenever they get ___ in.
*Price-tags are not written in stone (well, except at GS/"normal" stores); *negotiate* :)
Once in awhile you may find something decent on your local Craig's List...but...beware of anyone wanting you to meet them somewhere w/ a lot of cash - meet somewhere crowded & safe :P
Happy hunting!
-
I say you go to garadge sales, used game stores and amazon. You can pick up boatloads of games at garadge sales.
-
I have the most luck at second hand stores but I also used to work for one so I was able to increase my numbers substantially because of this. I normally strike out at garage sales and flea markets but I don't go to them often enough for them to really pay off, I have found that I have the best luck when I can hit up a place repeatedly.
-
I almost always use eBay or specialist online stores like Play-Asia and GameofJapan... but that's because the majority of my games are retro imports. For newer domestic stuff I just pop onto Amazon and let it do it's thing :)
-
Thanks for the advice guys! I'll keep trying to score some good games at a yard sale/flea market--been striking out thus far but hoping to find something eventually. I wish there were some used games stores near me but I'm out of luck there. And for some reason the only games I ever see at thrift stores are sports games for Xbox. :/
@Disgaeniac, I always meet people at the mall when I buy things off craigslist as I prefer not to be robbed! Also, I didn't know GS was phasing out PS2 games. Do you think they'll have a big sale to get rid of stuff?
-
If its anything like around me, they just quietly sold their stock down and never announced any kind of big sales.
-
The internet!
Really, that's the best place for me to get games. lukiegames, jjgames, mtgfanatic, japangamestock, just random google searches for random sites... those are generally the best way for me to buy "retro" stuff... ebay is bad since people keep overcharging for old games (though I sometimes find good deals on imports). For current-gen stuff ebay is not too bad ways to get used modern games sometimes for decent prices. Not counting the stuff I pre-order online, for that I just go wherever the best deal is (which has actually been Future Shop recently).
Outside of the internet... well, kijiji/craigslist is TERRIBLE here, so I almost never get any deals (people almost always charge MORE than retailers, it makes no sense)... Retailers (even independent ones) are terrible as well (though sometimes there's good prices on current-gen stuff)... The best place to get old games in person is really a specific reseller at one of the flea markets, but he knows game values so I'll never find really big deals there (though he's frequently under ebay prices).
Yard sales and thrift stores have never been successes for me, but still check them out, you never know.

Kind of confused why GameStop has started selling off their older games like GameCube and PS2 when they are considering selling vintage games:

Lukiegames was actually one of the first places I checked for PS1 games. I thought they were kind of expensive though. Most of the games I was looking for were $50+ and a couple of them were almost $100. I can't figure out if the games are rare or just overpriced. On current-gen stuff I've been able to get some good deals on eBay and Amazon too.

- I'm not really sure...
I live within about 1/2 hour of 3 Game Stop stores.
The closest one (about 10 min) is my "main" one.
I'm pretty good friends w/ one of the senior workers there (as in, I make sure he gets all of my pre-orders & I also give him 10's on my "Satisfaction Surveys" --and-- I often walk out w/ free (and unexpected) art books, OST's (yesterday it was some sealed box of Dishonored-Tarot-Cards), etc).
Anyway, what *their* doing is...they've removed all of the (used) PS2 & DS games from the store area.
Apparently, while 1 person's dealing w/ everyone & everything going on in the store - the other 2 are in the back-room, cataloging ~4,000 PS2 games and ~2,800 DS games.
Their new "system" is going to be PS2 & DS (used) games will be by request only :o
The workers in the back room are supposedly 'listing' all of these games, so, I guess, everyone will have to be clustering around the desk to *see* what used PS2 & DS games are available...unless they walk-in knowing what, exactly, they want in advance...and asking for/about it >:(

LMAO, that has to be one of the most ignorant things Ive ever heard. So basically in order to get a ps2, ds, or any game they carry thats not the most current crap, you have to walk in and ask to look at a book of what they have? Lamestop really is a sort spot in the gaming world. I really wish they would go out of business. Im guessing once download only consoles hit the market, they will. It makes me sad to walk into a "game store" and hear more about ipads and cell phones than games (and the games you do actually hear about is the 95th NFL installment or every sequel to every worthless FPS game made).

This "system" sounds complicated and a little pointless. I've actually purchased a majority of my PS2 games online so will they no longer be available online either once this new system is put into place?

Yeah, lukiegames isn't the best place for the "rarer"/more expensive games, but if you're looking for a lot of the cheaper stuff, that free shipping is very nice :P

Awesome! I'll definitely check this out. I've had sellers misrepresent the condition of games to the point where it's almost laughable so I'm always on the look out for a reliable seller. Thanks!

This guy sounds awesome, I would actually take a trip down to Boca Raton to buy stuff, if I had the cash :p I'll have to order from him one of these days!

Yard sales and thrift stores have never been successes for me, but still check them out, you never know.
it all depends on what thrift stores you go to some like one that's only 1 minute from me has every thing from pc games to dreamcast games
-
First off, Awesome screen name! Me personally I have bought a ton at thrift stores in great shape and generally complete, in fact my entire ps1 ans ps2 collection is from thrift stores, I know sometimes there seems to be nothing there but keep checking eventually they'll get something especially playstation also check different thirft stores in different areas. I can kind of seem like quite the adventure to find things but it's worth it with how much money you save.
If I need to buy something off the internet it's generally for systems that you cant really find things in thrift stores, neo geo, saturn and turbo grafx. Otherwise I say keep checking the thrift stores and have some patience with it you will find something

I live not too far away from about three HUGE thrift stores and so far, no luck at all. They have lots of games but they are all sports games for some reason. I do intend to keep checking at the stores as I assume some good games might show up eventually. I've paid anywhere from $8 to $25 for PS2 games which isn't terrible but when you're buying several games at once it definitely adds up. So I'd like to find some bargains!

Amazon and Ebay.

You gotta hit them streets, Son! Thrift stores, yard sales, and flea markets are all gold. You'll strike out 95% of the time, but that one time you find something awesome for $2 it's all worth it. \
Keep an eye on craigslist. You can find some good stuff and people are willing to haggle. Folks that post on there either A) are strapped for cash and need some now or B) don't give a squat about what they are selling. In my experience, it's a good place to find deals. Just don't get robbed.
I love game stores. I love Game Xchange. They have set prices on there stuff and most of the time it pretty fair. Unless it is an RPG, SNES games top out at $20. That is a deal. These stores make 99% of their money on current gen stuff. Take advantage and hit them up if you can find one.

My personal experiences. First most of my PS1 collection was bought straight off the shelf when it was current. Alot of my PS2 crap was the same thing so no help there.
Ebay: Ive bought quite a lot of stuff from Ebay to be honest. If you watch auctions and stick to a limit, eventually you will win one.
Amazon: I dont use it as much cause nothing is negotiable. I did however send a guy a message once and got him to part out a game to me and it was worth it on both ends.
Thrift stores: Its all a lucky random there. Sometimes Ill see SMB for 9.99 and then there are times Ive found (for example) Die Hard for $1.80, Mt Dew limited halo for $6.99, etc
Garage sales: I personally have never bought anything from a garage sale. I have heard of amazing scores though. I just never seem to be on the receiving end of it.
Craigslist: Ive gotten stuff from there but most people in my area think that craigslist prices should be Ebay + 10%. Its really annoying. I did meet one couple however in my area who just find stuff in storage and I buy it from them. So far Ive gotten a top loader NES, Snow bros, and motor city patrol for $50 total.
Local stores: There is a good side and a bad side to them. Most of them are knowledgable enough on the games that the prices are really not a score. But sometimes their system doesnt get updated and the current high price game goes for next to nothing. My best find was TMNT tournament fighters for $10.95 (their system only recognized the SNES version).
Other forums: Most of my collection has come from Nintendo age/Sega age/here. A lot of collectors (myself included) really prefer to deal with other collectors. I have gotten a lot of great deals so far. :)

I have been hitting the streets! Haven't had much luck yet but I'm going to keep trying until I luck up. I haven't seen any of the games I'm looking for on craigslist, but I have purchased from CL in the past. Never been robbed, hooray! The closest Game Xchange to me is in CT and that's a 6 hour drive. There are no stores similar to that in my area either. :/

As far as eBay goes, I guess I haven't had the patience to bid on an item, instead preferring to either go the "Buy it Now" route or head over to Amazon. Although GameStop can be a bit annoying at times (more than once I've used the Pickup@Store option only to go there and discover the game was not available) I've found a lot of my PS2 games there. Need to hurry up and get what I can since I've been told they are phasing-out PS2 games. There are just no local stores in my area that sell older games unfortunately.

I found a new video game website that has better selection and pricing compared to lukiegames, dkoldies and jjgames the website is www.mikesclassics.com . They pretty much only sell classic vintage games like Nintendo, Sega and Playstation although want to expand to new generation games in the future. This place is great, because they don't sell any crummy games! The guy who started the business is a video game collector and everything he sells on the website is Original, good condition and a best selling popular title. They don't sell old sports games and try to stick to the most popular genres of gaming which is a nice change to the online marketplace. They also offer bulk discounts and are about half the price of Lukiegames which seems to the most popular retro gaming website that isn't called Amazon or EBAY. I had a few good experiences here :)
-
Just looked at this Mike's Classics site. Man I hate when places merge Game Boy and Game Boy Color games into one category. Other than that, it looks like some good deals in there. But I think they are harming themselves by limiting themselves to "only the best & most popular video games with a rating of 8 out of 10 or higher!" ha.

I've been *trying* to buy games on Ebay. But the sellers keep canceling my bids for some reason. When I check their reason why they say Explanation: Miscellaneous Reason. I try to contact them and ebay just gives me an error message with "the seller cannot answer your question" before I even get to ask it. Its almost like these people are banning me from auctions or something and I have no idea why :(

Are you new to Ebay? A lot of sellers are suspicious of/avoid anyone with little feedback, especially on higher-priced items.

If it's not because you're new/have low feedback it might be because you don't have a credit/debit card linked to your Paypal account or you've got eBay strikes for non-payment on previous auctions. Sellers can set it so that people who fall under those conditions get automatically blocked from bidding/buying.
If it is just because you're new - make the effort to contact them *before* trying to buy, and make sure you emphasise that you understand the auction description and you just want to buy whatever they're selling. A lot of people block newbies because they tend to not read auction descriptions and leave negatives for bad reasons - I've seen reliable sellers neg'd for Japanese games being in Japanese by new eBayers.

1. Goodwill - You can't find better deals than at Goodwill. Cartridge games for $2-$3 a piece, PS1 & Dreamcast games for $3.99 (because they lump them in with music CDs), and PS2 & beyond for $4.99 a piece. And it doesn't matter what the title is or if it's complete or not (and disc-based games there are ALWAYS complete).
2. Video Exchange - A local used movie store in my town. They also sell a butt-load of video games used. The prices here are reflective of eBay, which is kind of disappointing. But then you don't have to pay for or wait for shipping and you get to physically browse which is always more fun.
3. eBay/Amazon - Because you can find pretty much any game between the 2 sites and once in a while you do find a good deal.
4. GameStop - I don't come to GameStop nearly as often just because I purchase a lot more retro-games than I do modern games. But when I do get modern games, it's usually at GameStop because they have pretty decent used prices.
-
The Goodwill in my town will rip you right the eff off. I think there's some guy in the back checking eBay pricing or something... Last time I went in there I found a few crap Game Boy carts at $10 - $15 and Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening was priced at $20! At Goodwill?! :o
I got lucky in there a while back and got a handful of decent SNES carts (some with manuals) for like $2 or $3 apiece. I don't think that guy was working there then...

Well i mostly import my game from China or Hong Kong now, since it's cheaper.
But, i'm really lazy to add them to the database everytime, so, it might take awhile until i update my collection.
No offense but, most of the games in the database are NA, a few PAL tho.
-

Ya, it would be nice to get more EU and other regions listed. But I know for myself, that when it comes to foreign titles I start to get lost pretty quickly.
Also, I hope to get the ratings systems for other regions listed asap.
-
Yeah i would do it, but i need a good camera for the covers, not crappy phone camera.
Plus need to get the covers/info etc.
And the sumbit/edit i did are not approved yet. It's been 2 weeks or something, but i heard the admin is the only one who can approve or something.

Are you sure that they weren't already approved...and maybe you just missed the notification message (at the top of your screen) when logging-in?
I know that I've done that before -but- you can always double-check your # of Edits/Submissions in your user-profile, too :)

I get most of my games from garage sales, thrift stores and pawn shops. If there's something I'm really looking for, I'll hit a local game store (there are several in the area that carry retro stuff) or as a last resort, eBay. I don't think I've bought from eBay in about two years; at one time I was buying off eBay almost every week there for a while, but this was back when I was single and CIB NES games rarely cost over $10.

I went through a phase where I went kinda' crazy ordering games from Amazon & Amazon sellers for a few months a few years ago; but, I've yet to *ever* buy *anything* on E-Bay yet.
I think I've also bought a few games through Craig's List 2 or 3 times...

Yeah - I should have been more specific...it's not shown in your "regular" user profile, per se.
What you would do - to see your edit/submission stats is:
1). Click-on your name Anton in one of your posts,
2). On the top of the screen, click-on profile,
3). Click-on View Collection, and
4). (After clicking-on "View Collection"), in the top-left part of your screen -IN BIG LETTERS-; you'll see:
"Anton's Collection",
Click-on "Anton's" here...and it will bring you to a 'more detailed' "Stat" page :)
*E.D.I.T.*
- I just took a quick look at your page, and it's presently showing:
"0 Edits" & "5 Submissions" :)
-
Anton,
When you submit new games to the database they are automatically added to the database, no need for admin approvals. Edits on the other hand need admin approval and I don't really remember if I saw edits w/ your name on it or not, but I do know that I the last few times I've approved edits I only denied a couple that had watermarked images. So, I'm not sure what happened to any edits you may have submitted.
Maybe one of the other admin knows?
-
Oh alright, i think i only submitted new games not edit. I thought new game counts as an "edit". My bad.
-
It's cool. :)
-
I think the discussion went somewhere else...
For my part, it's not complicated.
Step 1: My workplace... I work at a canadian video game retail store called Microplay. We're kind of like canadian Gamestops (even though we have those also...), except we're not jerks to our customers, we have old and new games... and we give life-time warranties on used games for free!
Step 2: Pawnshops
Step 3: Best Buy and Gamestop
Step 4: Amazon and Ebay

From what I read on their facebook, they're not allowed to have a retail space at their current location.

depends on what I'm looking for or for what system. Player 1 Video Game Store a place that sells retro as well as swag and even the new stuff. I mainly only go there because I like his store and enjoy the friendly environment but also because The owner actually knows his stuff about games. I also learned alot about those ripoff carts for example "NES version of Earthbound" because I brought him one thinking I had something awesome. Any other time I search everyonce in awile at Pawnshops, Garage Sales, Flea markets, Thrift Stores, and Craigslist..
I would advise if going to Flea Markets always make sure that you know the going price of the game. Also be careful of the people selling nothing but games because alot of times 10 dollars more than what you could pay somewhere else will make a difference.. A couple of times, if I didn't have my phone with me I almost would have gotten games 10-20 dollars more than there going price.. Or maybe that is some swindling cowboy trick that happens only in Texas...

I usually hit up our local flea market when the weather is nice. Local resale shops, and then local retro game shops if i'm looking for something specific.
plus craigs list.
With EVERYONE having smart phones and Ebays inflated prices on retro games now a days its hard to get REALLY good deals even at a flea market.
Not saying its impossible but it makes it a lot harder.
I haven't hit up any garage sales since i started this hobby, so when the weather gets nice that will probably be a weekly thing for me.
And the best place i have found to get good deals on sega games (since that's all i collect) is FACEBOOK. yes FACEBOOK.
If you look there are people creating re sale groups you can join and scroll through everyone's post's of used stuff they are trying to sell.
Just Monday i spotted a posting by a girl who was at her moms resale shop and had a sega with about 10 or 12 games for sale.
She posted a list and saw she had 2 games that i wanted and only cost 6 dollars a piece. Both were complete and in box. Both worth well over the 6 dollar price tag. drove to the town next to me and grabbed them up. From when she posted to when i bought the games it probably only took an hour at most. I currently am a member of 6 resale groups with a combined total of 16,667 members. That is ALOT of people selling stuff. plus these groups are searchable for specific things.
Cant tell you how many game lots i have bought for cheap this way.

95% of all the games in my collection were bought from a combination of thrift stores, pawn shops, flea markets, garage sales, and local game stores. Despite having a big collection, I am not rich, not even close, so I like to make my dollar go as far as possible and these are the best places to do it I've found. I also buy on Ebay occasionally, but only for games I never find, at least for a good price, or games I want to play badly.
-
Most of the games I bought recently are either from burningdoom, eBay, Amazon, and GameStop. Haven't been able to look at pawn shops lately since the closest one I know of with video games closed down. Had so many games I wanted to get but was limited with budget at the time.
Collection-wise, mostly eBay and GameStop.

At first I thought it was a funny miswriting of marketplace, then I saw the URL and went all "Ooooooooooooooooh!" :P

Keyword "recently" on both our posts, burningdoom.

Thrift Stores, forums, some retro stores around here and sometimes ebay

I love the retro store that I found in Washington... Allows me to try games that I'm interested in or just want to play. Ah, the nostalgia of '90s-era video game stores. ;D :'(
-
I get my games from Gamestop, Amazon, Ebay, and my local comic book store. I generally check all four for the best prices but in my opinion they are each good in their own way. My local comic shop has fantastic prices but they don't guarantee the games. I picked up a copy of Knights of the Old Republic for the Xbox for $4! Gamestop is the best place to get used games and pre-order stuff. Plus the employees at the store near me are really nice and always give me free pre-order stuff that no one picked up.
Ebay is a great place to go for importing games and occasionally it has the lowest prices. I only buy new games from Amazon (and when they are the lowest price).
