I was so excited for this game when it was announced, and then finally they decided to bring it to the rest of the world!
But of course, NOA being terrible, has decided that it will be a digital only title (even though Europe is getting a nice limited edition). http://nintendoeverything.com/nintendo-news-mario-maker-bundle-for-na-release-dates-more/
So that ruins that game for me. The sad part is that this will definitely hurt sales of the game, in addition to the fact that NOA has done absolutely no advertising for it, which means that future releases probably won't even get a digital release here because "no interest" or some other lame excuse. It has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. All those people petitioning for the game suddenly don't want it now because of being digital only.
For me I would probably get it anyway but I'd have to buy an external HDD first, and I can't justify spending $100+ for one game that will be gone as soon as Wii U servers go down.
-
I'll be fine with digital. Been wanting a good creepy game for awhile and since Silent Hills isn't happening, Fatal Fame will have to be it lol One good thing about the release is that it is only 50 bucks, rather than 60, and for those that are on the fence with the game, it's essentially free to play up up to almost chapter 2, where you then have to buy the game to play the rest. Neat way to do a demo.
-
Yep, no physical kills it for me. I won't spend $50 to "rent" a game. I'll look into possibly importing the UK version, depending on how the modding scene is going - I know it was fairly simple to soft mod the Wii to play imports.
-
I had forgotten about the possibility of "getting around" region locking. It was easy for the Wii, not sure if they've done it yet for Wii U.
-
I'm from the UK so if the special edition is available from Amazon I'll be getting that :)
-
Nintendo can go "F" themselves in the "A."
This is completely ridiculous. It's like they don't want to make money! With the pitiful (and rapidly dwindling) retail presence that Nintendo currently enjoys, they need every title they can get on the shelves, especially exclusives!
Awesome exclusives on the Wii were like pulling teeth to get localized. Xenoblade Chronicles, Last Story and Pandora's Tower needed a huge fan petition to gain traction and games like Fatal Frame IV were never localized. Now here we are with the Wii U which is Nintendo's worst selling console of all time and Reggie has his fingers stuck in his ears going "La, la, la I can't hear you!"
F you Nintendo. F you.
-
Just checked my HDD space and getting this might prove problematic because of it. Gonna have to look to an affordable spare HDD first.

Agh, I really wanted a physical copy of this game, since I've heard so many good things about it. Why is it that NA only has the digital release, while JP and EU get physical copies, and Europe even gets a limited edition thats actually pretty nice. Do they really think that it can't sell enough units to warrant a physical release here, when they can do it in any other region?
Looks like I'm gonna have to import a EU copy at this rate, and wait for homebrew to break region lock, just like on the 3DS.

Nope, modders for Wii U are still working on kernel/ IOSU exploits because they need to modify the code that launches applications( games) and get past the region check. I still can't believe that the Wii U and 3DS are the only natively region locked consoles still on the market, and I really wish they would change their policy on this.
-
For anyone interested in still getting the digital version, the word is that it's 16GB to download, and 24GB to install. This is almost the entirety of the HDD of the deluxe model of the Wii U, and well above the space on the standard model. And from what people are saying, you must have 32GB free because the eShop requires you to have double the space of the download available (not sure how true that is). You will very likely need external storage space.

Since last gen with the Wii and DS, NoA has really gone downhill. They kept so many games from us that we had to beg for (Xenoblade Chronicles, The Last of Us, Pandora's Tower) that we finally got because they were tired of people importing the games, and several that were highly demanded that they never gave to us (Trace Memory 2, Day of Crisis, Last Window, and a Wii RPG I can't remember the name of right now). Very very few limited editions, and when we got them, they're not even worth it. NoE, on the other hand, has gotten a lot better from the sound of things. They regularly get Limited Editions, even if it's just the game in a steelcase, and they often get even just small print runs of games that we get digital only. NoA also gave and is giving us Splatoon and Mario Maker respectively at full price while NoE sold the games at a lower price. In America, Amiibo are generally pretty hard to come by, other than the standard Mario, Peach, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Link that you see in like Wal-Mart or whatever, but in EU you can pretty much just go and get what you want. Not to mention all the crazy exclusivity deals. NoA intentionally delayed Yoshi's Wooly World for Amiibo production, even though it's been ready to go. NoE released Yoshi's Wooly World on time, plus they get Devil's Third this week. NoA has pushed back several games just because it fills up the holiday release schedule, even though the rest of the year has been barebones.
This game in particular seems to have people pretty upset, though. Nintendo has ensured that this game will not sell well, which in turn they'll use an excuse to never localize any future titles in the series most likely:
Digital only: Collectors get shafted, plus it cuts sales due to the fact the game is so large people just won't have the storage. Digital only games for consoles are a terrible idea right now because there's no insurance for the future unlike with PC.
No advertisement: This game appeared what, once in a Nintendo Direct a long time ago? No one but fans of the series know about this game and they seem to intend to keep it that way.
$50: This is only a problem because it's digital only. Digital games don't go on sale very often on the eShop and if it does go on sale, I'd be surprised if it were ever priced lower than $40. People just aren't going to pay that much.
Hopefully getting around the region locking will be sorted out before the end of the Wii U's lifespan.

Geez, that is a huge download. I'm not against a digital copy, but do they not realize that this is an issue, especially with how most of their systems come packaged with a download copy of the game and taking up their limited space? I haven't downloaded really any new games, mostly some older stuff and a couple slightly bigger games like Pikmin, but I'm already at 8 gigs left.
I like the Wii U, but Nintendo does have issues with fully thinking things through. They really need to be much more forward thinking with the NX to help curb the problems they've been having for years now.
-
I was so sad to learn that Fatal Frame was digital only. :'( How does Devil's Third get a physical release but Fatal Frame doesn't? They lost a sale from me. I'll gladly give them my money but there has to be more than a $50 access code. There's no way I'll buy it mainly because, like many of you have already said, storage. The Wii U has such a tiny storage capacity already, downloading a full fledged game like this isn't easy. It'd be one thing if it was digital only across the globe. But when Australia and Europe are getting physical releases, why not just release it in the States? NoA released that odd LBX game a few days ago, why not continue with the obscure games? Take a page out of Atlus and Xseed's books and take a chance on the obscure. It may not sell fantastically, but it would give the Wii U something special.

I understand it costs some money to physically release a game, but I have to wonder if it is really all that much? I'd imagine having more on the shelves were would be important for Nintendo since they do have a small selection of games at stores right now. I'm sure Fatal Frame V won't be knocking out millions of copies, but I have to imagine it would do more than Devil's Third cause it is an established franchise and it's been awhile since a Fatal Frame game was released here. Horror games are kinda big again and it would be a good push to have that available. I'd take a physical release of Fatal Frame V any day over one for Devil's Third lol
Though perhaps if they don't see the numbers digitally and see enough complaints, they might consider a physical release at one point, kinda like how the Wolfenstein standalone expansion got a physical release based on fan feedback.
-
Booo... hiss...
Freaking turrible.
-
I wasn't even thinking deep enough into it to even get to the game taking all that storage space. Coupled with Nintendo's bone-headed 32 gigs of storage, all they have done is ensure this game won't sell 100 "copies." And I use "copies" lightly because lets be real, American gamers are getting the royal shaft sans lube with this "release."
-
This is pretty bad, just like the second half of last generation with the Operation Rainfall trilogy, which only managed to see physical release due to the immense amount of protest that NoA recieved from everybody. And even still, Xenoblade for Wii is still a hard game to find for a decent price.
Fatal Frame should defenitely not be a $50 release; I don't think its worth the money for a digital exclusive title, not to mention the game is 16gb of space, defenitely not enough if you already have a few Wii U titles on your 32gb hard drive. They need to at least give people the option to purchase a physical copy even in a limited print run since they need exclusives and I'm sure there would be decent sales if they had some good marketing. People have got to protest this decision; the American branch treats it customers so stupidly and terribly compared to their European and Japan branches.
-
Yeah I emailed Koei Tecmo to see if they have any plans to release it physically. I called NOA and they didn't have any information about it. I would love to have this game physically though.
-
Why bother? We got shafted with Fatal Frame IV never coming to America....they won't bother with this one.
As a company who makes a product competing with two other similar products, I would want to offer as many incentives and have exclusives to differentiate my product. You know...so people would want to buy my product.
Nintendo is the exact opposite. The 3rd party games that Nintendo has taken under their wing and published, they may as well have never bothered. They pretty much set Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2 out to die. They don't talk much about Devil's Third and it will just get tossed out there with no marketing behind it. Fatal Frame V which could be a big boon as an exclusive horror title? Yeah...digital only chumps.
"Hey look! We struck gold with these Amiibo's! People love them!" What do they do? Shortchange stores, make exclusives and just about every other conceivable way to ensure that fans can't get their hands on them. Why make more to make money when we can let scalpers on eBay rake in four times their retail value?! Sounds good to me!
Seriously...someone needs to drag Reggie's ugly-ass out of Nintendo America HQ and put someone in charge that doesn't have their head buried in the sand and will do whatever it takes to make Nintendo, the Wii U and New 3DS successful.

That's pretty harsh, but mostly true. As of late, NOA has been acting a lot like the government. Do as little as they possibly can while still being able to get away with it.
-
The problem is Nintendo has said on more than one occasion that they don't think they're competing with Sony & MS.
I'm a Nintendo fan from way back and I WANT them to be better than they are today, because I know they can do it - they've done it before. But Nintendo doesn't make it easy to be a fan these days, and I wouldn't dream of having a Nintendo console as my primary system. That hasn't been viable since...heck, I'll be generous and say the Gamecube, but if I'm being honest since the SNES.

It's scary how we're all fretting how Fatal Frame is getting no physical release when, as of now, the NX has no disc drive. Granted, the system may have cart games, but what if it doesn't? Will the reaction be the same? My guess is yes.

Right now I'm assuming that patent is one of those cases where a company is just patenting things to have them on record. But yes, if Nintendo - or whoever - comes out with a digital-only console, I'm out.

I don't know if I'd be "out" per say, but I definitely am hesitant to have digital only games. It worries me that some of my Wii virtual console games I may not have forever.

If Nintendo goes digital-only on the NX, they are done for. Kaput. Fini. Retailers have cut way back on the space allotted to Nintendo products. If they try to release a digital-only system with no games for retailers to profit from, retailers won't give the system the time of day. One only needs to look to the Vita and PlayStation TV to see this. Few retail titles released? The product gets tossed into the corner on the bottom shelf next to systems that actually sell.
Looking back a bit further, look at the disaster that was the PSP Go. No retail games meant no retailers carried it. The only place I ever saw it was Gamestop and it was just a display box on the shelf.

I don't care how harsh it sounds. I'm tired of feeling bad for Nintendo or pussy-footing around and trying not to offend Nintendo fanboys when the reality is every decision they have made as of late sucks. They-NoA at least-don't give a rat's ass about their fans. They have completely lost touch with reality.

That's where I wonder if a digital only console could ever succeed. Without the support of retailers on a business end and no support from gamers and collectors on the fanbase end, it would just be a mess. Nintendo has a dedicated fan base that would support them at first, but after maybe a year, it would just fall apart.
Look at the disaster of the Xbox One Launch and all the retractions that Microsoft had to do. People were in uproar. I had local shops refusing to carry Xbone before the retractions. If console games were only sold digitally, the Electronic Section in stores would become much smaller.

This is just the beginning of the end for physical games. When you think about it, most games now don't come in physical form. Only well established franchises and developers are still doing it, but of those, most of the games are also available as a download. Doubt that any next gen console will have a disk drive. Technology has triggered cannibalization in many industries, like games, and will continue to do so until fraction of what once was is left.
Gaming companies seem really, really eager to cut production of physical games out. They want you to think it's because they've become irrelevant, but it's not true. What's sad is customers having to beg companies to still produce physical copies. It's the opposite of what they'd have you believe, people still want it, they just don't want to invest in it anymore because there's a cheaper alternative for them as a company now.

I have to disagree with the first part. Though a large number of independent games are released digital-only, the majority of major studio titles are released on disc. What we are actually seeing is that game development costs have risen to the point where developers and/or publishers are playing it safe and not taking risks on new IPs.
I support indies when they put their titles out on disc. Stick It To the Man I picked up right away. Terraria I will get when it drops uner $30 because...that's just too high. I have seen that Brothers is getting a physical release and will support that as well.
These companies aren't fooling me into believing that physical media is irrelevant. The entire reason they want to go digital is they make double what they do on physical releases. There is no cost associated with production of physical items nor any shipping costs. They also don't have to sell the games for half-price (approximation here) to a retailer who then makes their own profit on the game when they sell it to you as the end user.
I know they are working on how to go digital-only, but they are stuck between a rock and hard place. If they charge half-price for digital games (which is all they should be charging anyway) under retail price, they will piss off retailers who will retaliate by not carrying their products at all. If they go digital-only, they again piss off retailers who in turn won't carry the systems that are used to play the games.
I personally hope game companies don't find a solution to that mess anytime soon. Offering digital or physical copies of games is just fine with me. Those who want a download can go ahead and those like me who want a physical item for their money can go to the store or order it online.

I don't think that's really true, sure digital is cheaper, but have you seen a modern physical copy? No instruction book, two cents worth of plastic for the case, and the cheapest physical media, I imagine the profit from a physical copy is probably a large quotient greater than the cost of the production for it. I'd say 80% of gamers prefer to physically own the games they bought, if they cut out physical copies, whether it's now, or five years from now, they're going to alienate and likely lose a ton of business. Near everyone on this site is a collector, so we're all passionate about physical copies of games, the only way I see digital games taking off is if they're much cheaper than their physical counterparts, but at the end of the day, I'd still spend ten to twenty bucks extra to have a game on my shelf as opposed to on a hard drive.

The death of physical releases will ensure that even if I continue to game, my "purchases" will slow to a crawl. Whereas I buy 24+ new releases a year right now (usually more than that), I would only buy 2-3 digital titles a year maximum and just play them to death to squeeze every cent out that I can. It also doesn't help that I live in the boonies. Download speeds max out at 10MBps over 4G LTE and data caps are ridiculously low. A single game download would be next to impossible for most people in a situation like mine. As is, I pay through the nose for a business license just so I can have unlimited internet. I have to pay $150 a month just for that!
A big part of my gaming enjoyment aside from the actual aspect of playing is:
A) Owning a physical item so I feel that I have something to show for my money
B) Going to midnight launches or store openings on release day and sharing my love of gaming with other like-minded individuals.

That would be my initial thoughts, but the entire experience would be tainted IMO. It's like no matter how much I love the original Conan the Barbarian movie, it will forever be tainted by Conan the Destroyer. Or how St. Anger by Metallica sucked so bad, it made it hard to listen to good Metallica. Or even worse, how bad Episodes I, II and III of Star Wars was where I basically couldn't bear to watch any of the original trilogy for years because Lucas had ruined it.

I hadn't really thought about that… I remember as a kid I freaking loved the Star Wars prequels, then my Aunt got me the original trilogy DVD box set and I got angry with myself for thinking that the prequels were good when they really sucked in comparison to the originals.

Eh, I've never understood this type of thinking. There are lots of things I love that have gotten crappy sequels / remakes / etc, but it hasn't affected my love of the originals.
Speaking of getting screwed by digital games tho - I had decided this week to sell my Majora's Mask New 3DS because I need the money & nothing really requires it anyway besides Xenoblade, which is better on the Wii. But then I discovered that Nintendo won't let you do a system transfer from the New 3DS to the original. I can't think of a single logical reason WHY you shouldn't be able to do that, other than they just don't want you to. So now I have to decide if I want to give up my digital games (all but one were Club Nintendo rewards) or just be stuck with the system. >:(

Everyone feels differently about things. That's just mine. No matter how much I might enjoy something like say, Conan the Barbarian...the thoughts of how crappy Destroyer are crop up in my mind. Kinda like listening to Kiss on Hair Nation and enjoying "Uhh all night" when memories of tripe from "Music from the Elder" crop up. Ugh....
As for your issue with the New 3DS, well yeah...that's just Nintendo. Their entire system is ludicrous. I can buy a brand new Vita, PS3, PS4 or even a PSP, log into my PlayStation account and download any previously purchased title. I can even have more than one copy on multiple systems (I believe three?). Nintendo? Nope. You have to go through a long, arduous, convoluted process of transferring the data between systems. And Nintendo was so thoughtful with the New 3DS that you can't transfer your games backwards to a standard 3DS even though it's the same. Damn. Software.
I wish Nintendo would drag their heads out of their collective ass and the fanboys would stop giving them a free pass.

Don't judge me but I liked the original Paul Blart: Mall Cop. The sequel was so bad I don't like the first movie anymore. Same with Highlander, it's a great movie but knowing how awful the sequels got makes me not like it.
Nintendo's transfer process is an absolute joke considering it's 2015, that's pretty much why I didn't transfer my Wii data to my Wii U system. That's another reason I don't ever want to buy digitally from them.
