Mine is Fracture, such an underated game. I played through it 3 times and got almost every achievement lol. A game that got a 5.9 from IGN that my friend gave me because he said its unplayable lol. for some reason I always loved it :)
also
virtual boy as a whole and secret agent clank lol
-
Mine would have to be Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of The Sith for the original Xbox. I always loved it as a kid and I don't understand why it got such low ratings from critics and gamers alike. It could be that it was just a "mindless button masher" but I still enjoyed it nevertheless.
-
Buddy of mine has Fracture, maybe I should borrow it....
I think I'd go with Destrega on ps1. Got a 5/10 or something from ign but my brother and I absolutely adore that game. We used it as a sort of faux Dragonball Z game when we were younger and didn't have access to good Dragonball games.
-
Batman Forever for the Sega Genesis. Not a fan of the movie but as a kid I loved this game and played the crap out of it. Just recently got it for the SNES and surprisingly enjoyed it just as much as I did as a kid. I did mention the movie is crap right?

So, once upon a time there was a hidden grove where all the hate... nah, no story this time, I'll give a legitimate answer.
Two Worlds. Never has there been such an underrated game... and it's not even because it's that good, it's because outside of Elder Scrolls and Fallout, no such other games exist! It's not as polished as it's Bethesda overlords, but god-dammit, it is an open world RPG with lots to do and many systems of power progression I can't get enough of. This is personal, but the horrible quality of the writing just gave it so much charm with the hero constantly saying ridiculous campy one liners using excessive amounts of medieval talk. Foorsoth! Why can't more companies go for the Bethesda Western RPG formula? The skill reset system was also quite amazing and simple, yet not really ever replicated.
In the end it's a poor-man's Elder Scrolls, but when there are only 5 coins in the world, you still do pretty good getting the silver instead of the gold. Also, it was way better than Witcher 3, which sucks because of it's crap controls and combat ;)
-
Duke Nukem Forever. It was unapologetically retro 90's throwback gameplay. Sure if you try to compare it side-by-side with modern shooters, it falls flat on many fronts. But taken for what it is (see above), it's just a lot of fun. I giggled like a little kid who heard a dirty joke a couple of times and was proud to earn that "turd burglar" trophy for picking a deuce up out of a john. :P

You...You take that back right now!
Two Worlds wasn't that bad though, I'll agree.
-
For something more contemporary, I'll go with Star Ocean V.
But some older titles include Ephemeral Fantasia, Tsuginai: Atonement, and Stella Deus.

18th Wheeler for Dreamcast/ Gamecube and Wartech: Senko no Ronde for X360 when it comes to general reviews.
Now if this were critic reviews, there's a ton of games, especially arcade, that fit the criteria.

This. The game has some... things you have to get past. But besides that I had a fun and laughable time playing the game!
Also, some people dislike the Guitar Hero franchise. I personally love it. So many memories playing Van Halen and Metallica songs.

ohhhh i finally mentioned it in another post and it brought me here. OMEGA QUINTET. i think it is a really cute game, and idk, i liked it. the dialogue stretches ON AND ON but whatever. i like magical girls and i like idols and i like turn-based jrpgs. so... yeah. game was right up my alley. i guess i also liked the circumstances in which i bought it. i paid $30, but i reunited with an older friend of mine for a time... only one day, but she and i have quite the history, and we had a nice chat. nothing came of it. but yeah.
anyway, i liked it a lot. it has a 4/10 almost universally.
(i haven't beat it tho, but i rarely beat a game now)
i may or may not be an idea factory whore though, so...
back when tales of the abyss came out it got a 6/10 in game informer... the magazine that is notorious for "anything under 7 is shit". it is in my top 5 list for ps2 games.
speaking of GI, they gave pokemon mystery dungeon blue rescue team a 3/10. liked that one too.
the hyperdimension neptunia series as a whole is trashed on. i love it.
i adore animal crossing happy home designer... i NEVER was going to pick it up, mind you. i thought, why would i want that?? it's not a REAL animal crossing. well, i caved one day. REALLY glad i did. it's so cute. the game doesn't reward you, but it is cuteness overloaded. i love playing it when i do. i was addicted for a couple days. i was playing it nearly constantly. heheh. i think if you go into it expecting a reward, you're probably not playing it 'correctly'. i don't think it's meant to be rewarding. i think it's just meant to be there for those who like decorating houses in animal crossing. and it accomplishes that really well. it's almost enough to make me want to buy a stupid card reader, then jump on ebay and buy the full deck of cards (just skip that random card pull shit). almost.
i can't think of any that were really, universally shit on tho that i like. i guess that i've not experienced enough, and i shy away from really notoriously awful games.
i'm actually really surprised not to see bound by flame in these threads, though. it was scored pretty damn low, but i know i see it pop up a fucking lot in 8chan threads with identical titles such as this, or "uncovered gems" threads. i mean to grab it often, but i want to just go ahead and get the ps4 version (because why not),, but every copy i see at gamestop is damaged to all shit.

Last reply was only a few months ago though.

I wouldn't say I loooooooved it, but I really liked the 2010 Splatterhouse. It didn't get great reviews. I saw more than one place say that the inclusion of the older games was the only reason to buy this game.
It was silly and repetitive, but I had a good time playing it. It's one of the few games I played through more than once last generation.

Yep. They were on the TurboGrafx 16, arcade and Genesis.

No, I was saying that I didn't know that the 2010 release contained the older games. Also, only the first Splatterhouse was on the TG16, the rest were on the Genesis.

LOL...yeah I just edited my post to reflect the Genesis games. I too did not know the originals were included in the 2010 game. I am now highly tempted to buy the new version.

Thanks Turf! I had no idea the originals were included! Can you do me a solid and look out how much it is for 360 at GameStop? I have a coupon I can cash in and if it's cheap enough I will probably get it. Thank you!

Right on! Now I just need to see if my local-yokel GameStop has one in stock. ;D

I think I see it at my local pawn shops for $8 on the frequent. I'll wait it out.

Alien Colonial Marines
This game definitely had flaws, but it was far from being the shitty, unplayable mess that critics claimed it was. I enjoyed it quite a bit, and as a big fan of the source material I thought it was a good game.
-
I think a lot of times, especially in recent years, games were absolute shit piles at release, but over time the game gets patched, but the damage is done and no one plays it. But then you do play it, and it's not that bad...
Except Assassin's Creed Unity... that game is still a steaming shit pile.

I played through the entire game. While I didn't hate it, if it weren't for the source material you mentioned it would have just been an all-around turd. Aside from being mediocre in every conceivable way, the thing that bugged me most was how they ret-conned the storyline where Hicks never died. That was stupid.
-
Another game that got panned hard that I enjoyed was Lair. It wasn't anything spectacular, aside from the graphics. But it was fun and the developers pretty quickly patched normal controls into the game. But the damage was done and nobody was buying it. It even put Factor 5 out of business which meant no more Star Wars Rogue Squadron games too. :'(
-
I thought of another one. Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter.
I adored this game, as did a couple of close friends on another forum. Whenever it gets mentioned, it either generates a stream of hate or infinite praise. There is never any middle ground with it. Unfortunately, most people despise it for being so different.

Why I pick it up was for the first 3 games. I just can't get into the new one

My most blatant instances:
Pit Fighter (Genesis).
Now, the arcade version of Pit Fighter is dogshit. And the SNES port is flaming dogshit. I personally find the Genesis port somewhat playable. I actually liked it enough to buy it, and I played it and beat it fairly regularly. The hit detection is a bit better than the arcade or the SNES.
Clay Fighter (SNES)
Definitely not the best fighter, but I enjoyed the imaginative characters and the opening song. I liked it enough to buy the sequel, and prompted me to buy Clay Fighter 64 1/3 Sculptor's Cut from my local Blockbuster when they made it available.
WWF In Your House (PS1)
I loved the Wrestlemania arcade game and PS1 port, so I had to get this sequel of sorts. It's not as good as its predecessor, but I liked it well enough.
This last one is video game blasphemy:
I love Chrono Cross, even more than Chrono Trigger.
I don't know if that qualifies, though, since Cross isn't really hated.
-
I used to hear about how Castlevania 64 is such a bad game, so my brother and I bought it to see how bad it really is. Like one of those so bad it's not really good, but at least silly and amusing in how bad it is and worth playing for a few hours.
Turns out it's actually a pretty good game, in my opinion! It's not the best game ever, but I enjoyed it quite a lot. I especially liked playing as Carrie, she was really cool.
Sure it's a little janky, but nothing out of the norm for a 64 game. The very first area has some lag, but it played fine after that. I've played and enjoyed other Castlevanias as well, and I can't understand why people disliked this game so much.
-
I think the problem with Chrono Cross was that its hype was inescapable. Everywhere you looked, Chrono Cross was getting hyped beyond belief. Possibly more than something like FFVIII. And when people finally played it, they realized all of the hype wasn't worth it.
I really enjoyed Chrono Cross, too. I loved using Eagle Eye to decimate everything in my way.

Me and my friend played Two Worlds for a half hour and quickly agreed it was a pile of garbage and quickly returned it to the video store for something else lol Not that I disagree with you on Witcher 3 for combat...I always thought I was sorta alone on that game having kinda miserable combat lol

I love that game. Yeah it isn't anything amazing, but I thought it was a ton of fun and Jim Cummings as the voice for the mask was amazing.
I have a similar game, in that Brutal Legend is kinda along the same lines. It wasn't particularly well loved and didn't sell well, but I 95% love that game. The tone, the humor, the style, the guest musicians, and it has one of the greatest soundtrack collections ever lol I think if they had not done the RTS gameplay sections or made them way better, that game could've gone further than it did. I'm still hoping for a sequel of any sort some day.
-

I second this.

Greetings, brother! ;)
Good to know someone else feels the same way. Most people think I'm whacked when I mention that.
I'm definitely not saying CT is a bad game, I still love it. I just liked CC more overall, with the unique battle system, colorful world, amazing soundtrack, and the "gotta catch 'em all" aspect of the characters.
-

I have a hard time picking one over the other as my favorite; I love both for different reasons. I think it's because I didn't play either of them until much later.

One of my favorites from last gen. Brutal Legend is a good game.
I agree with you about the RTS parts of the game. That was a drawback.

Heya, badass name btw :D
I feel like CC didn't get the love it deserved. Seemed to always get overshadowed by other ps1 era rpg's.
People hardly ever talk about it in my circles. Maybe I need better circles...

I really, really need to pickup that game. I've only played a demo of it way back, but I remember it being wicked.

It's actually a name I've been using on a Transformers collecting site for a few years now. I had trouble coming up with a good name so I just combined my favorite pro wrestler with a Transformer :p
It's a little long, but UnderPrime and TakerPrime just sounded stupid :D
Yeah, CC did get overshadowed because its predecessor is so beloved, as well as having contemporaries like the super-popular FFVII. To be fair, though, most circles don't talk about it so you might have trouble finding one that does. Maybe we need our own circle, "Citizens of Chronopolis: Friends of Chrono Cross" or some such :p ;D

I'll be honest and say Ephemeral Fantasia for PS2 i said that because some people say Sephiroth clone when they're talking about Xelpherpolis comparing Xelpherpolis & Sephiroth from FFVII i forgot who but one person said that Rummy looks like or reminds him of 1 of favorite characters Kasumi from Dead Or Alive series & yes i admit it that Ephemeral Fantasia for PS2 is 1 of my favorite games :).
