Title: Mario Odyssey Discussion!
Post by: marvelvscapcom2 on October 26, 2017, 02:09:43 pm
Yet another 10/10 game from the big N :). I will finally get my hands on my long awaited copy tomorrow and this day will feel like a month  ;D.   I'm so excited for this more than almost any other game in my life and I feel like a kid again.  In the mean time I will try to avoid the negative fan bases from both Xbox and PS4 in the mean time as they come up with hate and rumors as to why Nintendo has had 2 10/10 games in one year instead of just letting us be happy.  But that's just the toxicity.  I can escape it here.

This post can be for all our pre release angst and fun and to discuss when the game drops :)

So far almost every reviewer has rated it a masterpiece.

Doing the midnight launch for it tonight as I'm too excited to wait till tomorrow to pick it up.  This and Breath of the Wild were two of my most hyped games of the year.

I have not been this hyped for a Mario game since Super Mario 64. It looks incredible and the consistent perfect and near-perfect scores have be dying to play this right now. I am going to pick it up until midnight, stay up until probably 3am playing it, hate myself at work all day tomorrow for staying up that late, and then do it again Friday night lol.

I am quite excited... excited enough to buy a Switch for the game, which says something. Ever since Super Mario World when I was a lad, which I wanted to get an SNES for I have not been so hyped for Mario. I wasn't following news (as a lad) when Mario 64 was coming out, but when I did play it it certainly blew me away. I wasn't overly hyped for Sunshine, but I did get it pretty quick and enjoyed it. The Galaxy games really didn't hype me too much... the planetoids stuff was meh, I prefer a big open world which is why Odyssey seems like such a refreshing return to form.

I have a Mario Odyssey Switch on the way that should arrive tomorrow, which will be my first time playing the Switch at all. I'm excited to do some more open-world collecting as Hat In Time really didn't do it for me outside of the first world, which sucks as I had been expecting that game for years.

This kind of Mario game is usually a once-in-a-generation thing, so there is definitely cause for excitement. Only worry is they've blown their 2 biggest franchises already and as stated it'll likely be another generation before more. I hope they have a new Donkey Kong platformer or a Majora's Mask style asset re-use project for Mario or Zelda... also Pokemon Switch project.

It'll be worth it! The co op play is great and is available from the very beginning of the story! Great for kids and people like me who are terrible with platforming, haha.

Sigh... the Mario Oddysey Switch bundle comes with a mother****ing DOWNLOAD CODE. Seriously? They couldn't bundle a damn physical game? I mean, I should have read the description better but still.... god dammit, I am pretty pissed.

I'm not surprised. Nintendo has been doing this for a while. My Mario & Luigi 3DS bundle was digital. And my Wii U Super Mario 3D World/Nintendoland bundle was also digital.

This game is so incredible!!  Just when I thought BOTW had no chance of being dethroned this year now it's truly a close call for GOTY :).   I love the new flare and unique creativity they have added to Mario with the cap powers and especially the costumes.  It really adds depth and It seems like the levels are so huge with well over 20 moon thingies to collect each.

I had a feeling it would be great but I think it passed my expectations. Might pass BOTW if it keeps this pace with it's epic boss battles. :)
Title: Re: Mario Odyssey Discussion!
Post by: kamikazekeeg on October 27, 2017, 10:24:57 pm
I'm half-way through the levels I think at the moment, going by the balloon's progress, and really enjoying it.  It's basically everything I was expecting.  It takes the great world design and collectible hunt of 64 and Sunshine, while also having elements seen in the following 3D Mario games.  Even the motion control inclusion, something I've talked about in length on how much I don't like it, is done better here, being completely option and more usable on a far better controller if I really need it.

It's pretty great and what I've been wanting for awhile.  Yooka-Laylee and A Hat in Time had good stuff in them, but were held back by basically being lower budget indie titles, whereas Odyssey has the potential to be one of my top favorite Mario game.  Kinda crazy to get both this and BOTW this year and becoming my favorites of the series.

*EDIT*
Already posted my basic review in the 52 Games Challenge thread, so I'll just say that I think the game is fantastic, on the verge of perfect, if it just wasn't re-using boss fights.  There are unique ones, at least 6 I think, but you fight the Broodals and Bowser twice and I hate when Mario games do that.  Just toss in the Koopalings for mini-boss fodder if you have to, just do anything other than slightly harder versions of fights I had already done.  Otherwise, I think it's my favorite Mario.  Got so damn much to collect now, wearing a wonderful outfit that made me quite happy, though I won't spoil the surprise.

So far my thoughts are that the game is amazing.  The musical scores, the slight retro flare they blend with the new 3D mechanics is perfect and New Donk City in the rain might be the most stunning Mario level ever :)

My only cons it that it could use more boss fights in between the massive amounts of moon hunting.  It seems like you need 10+ moons to leave each level, sometimes 20 but you only fight maybe 1 or 2 bosses in that time frame.  I think each level should have 4-6 bosses and said boss fights hopefully will get tougher as I progress because it's been too easy so far but I am only about half way through.   But all and all it's a masterpiece. :D

Welp.  I went total internet blackout and played all weekend and took yesterday off and played more.  Game is pretty amazing.  I think I'm at about 600 Moon Moons.

Might play more tonight while handing out candy.  I want to jump into AC:Origins, but it'll have to wait until tomorrow I suspect.

What you unlock at 500 moons is a real good challenge.  I still haven't been able to beat it yet.  I mean, it's "Mario Hard", but it's really easy to fail after any slip-ups.

I got to the part after the Yoshi part with 6 health, and then I hit the lava.  Game over man, Game over.

I beat the previous unlock though.

I've probably died well over two dozen times trying to beat that place.  The platforms that come after that section is rough and you need all the hearts you can get.

Yeah after the conveyor wall section with yoshi, the flying, then the lava flinging, there's another section with a moving platform that's easy to get hit.

No, not the conveyor wall.  You throw your hat at the scarecrow and then the wall starts popping out in sections.  That's as far as I got.

Oh right, that section, sorry, I got the placement wrong.  Yeah that one took me abit to memorize it.  I'm about three sections pass that with more to go.

I'm happy to hear it gets challengeful later :).   I have loved Mario Odyssey so far after completing it but do feel it has been a little too easy even for a Mario game.  But I haven't gotten to the darker side or any of the 200+ moon levels.  Hoping to be humbled with some moon collecting endeavors as well.

I try to avoid spoilers but I noticed there seem to be a lot of moons to collect in the game.

This makes me excited and I wonder if like the main series Pokémon games I'll feel determined to try and 100% it.

I've never been much of an Amiibo person.  Shovel Knight and 30th Anniversary Mario are the only ones I went out of my way to get.

But, after the huge pain in my ass that the purple coins have been (kept getting to 47/50 or 92/100), I went out and got wedding Bowser.  Got the missing coins in minutes.

Also, volleyball and jumprope can go to hell.

I was really hoping for the best May-rio game yet, but all I did was get my hopes up. For those who wanted a Mario 64, that's pretty much what you got with some minor improvements here and there.
To me Mario should be about pure platforming which is why I prefer Galaxy 2 and 3D World. Much like the 8 and 16 bit games, the main point is simply to get to the end of level and move on.
64, Sunshine and Odyssey focuses on doing a plethora medial tasks in sandbox environments in order to unlock the next area where you just do more of the same. You do have the occasional absract level floating in a void, but for the most part you're catching rabbits, ground-pounding glowy spots, and running to a star before time runs out.
This in my opinion this is just a copout. Instead of doing a bunch of creative levels, they make these large simple environments you just run around in completing meaningless tasks.
To me this just isn't as exciting or interesting as completing a multitude of well constructed levels. By having more levels the designers are able to experiment and in the end have more variety.
After explaining this I think you can understand why I find it funny when people bunch Super Mario 64 in with the rest of the original/main line of Super Mario games. It's fundimentally different in design and technology.
Even though some people straight up dismiss 3D World/Land as a part of the "main" line of games, I would argue they have more in common with the originals than 64 and Odessey do. Hell, they even brought back the flagpole for Pete sakes.

I agree with alot of this too :).   I found the moons to be a little too repetitive and in general the game could get mundane at times and over simplified.  The moons repated in each level with catching the rabbit, the slots, the timed coins, racing the koopa.  I loved the exploration and creativity with the outfits, how you spend your coins and the odyssey flying between worlds but it always felt like the boss battles which repeated twice were more of the same and lacked variety and all around it was very easy even for a Mario game.  I wish their would have been less moons but more substance behind them maybe even plots behind each one like little story lines to go down like 64 and sunshine had. It's still a masterpiece imo for it's exploration and sheer depth of moons but it definitely has it's gripes.  I'm hoping the intensity picks up with dark and darker side levels.  Because the bosses and the game in general could be beaten by a blindfolded fetus fresh from the womb.  :D.   Even for a Mario game it lacks that challenge aspect that makes it rewarding.  But the pros certainly outweigh the cons.

I've only played as Cappy in co-op mode, and I just have to say that this is the most Mario I've played since Super Mario Bros on the NES (outside of Paper Mario: TTYD). I know some folks feel like this isn't anything new for the series (and in many ways, a step back), but I think the co-op feature is handled well for those of us who are not good at Mario games. It's also very charming, IMO, and it's hard not to smile when you get to "capture" an enemy character and walk around solving puzzles.

The co-op mode was definitely handled well.  I went home to visit this weekend and my youngest sister really enjoyed playing as Cappy as she struggled with trying to play as Mario.  It's a lot more interactive than just having the second player collect star bits in Galaxy as well.

She keeps calling Cappy "Mappy" though lol  ;D

There's a trick that has to do with using co-op to play as just Cappy and hit the volleyball more easily. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLtGxzrrHK8

I finished the main story yesterday and now I find myself in a minor pickle. First, let me start by saying I thoroughly enjoyed the time I spent in the game, but I did feel that it was a little short and not at all difficult; I was really hoping there would be just a little more to it. I know there are still tons of moons to find and more kingdoms to explore, but I find myself unsure if I want to jump back into the game and put more time into it just to see those few extra levels when I could be spending that time playing one of my hundreds of other games in my collection that I've never touched. I've got Persona 5 and Metroid Fusion up next in my backlog... so I think I'm leaning toward those. Anyone else feel the same?

You can pretty casually and easily unlock the last of the levels.  You only need 500 moons I believe, so grabbing a few every day isn't so bad as kinda just a chill thing to do.  I took a break for abit from Mario after getting burnt out trying to be the final level lol

Mark me down for this opinion as well.  The game is good, no question, but something about just left me a little cold.  It was a little too easy, and a little too repetitive to become my favorite Mario game.  It also generally cemented my opinion that Mario works best as a series of levels with set goals, rather than the open world experience.
