Video Game Database Discussion / Recalled release type?
« on: August 01, 2014, 07:13:08 pm »
Do we just consider recalled games to be official releases or should there be an additional release type for recalled games? For example, X-Men: Destiny was recalled on all platforms.

Video Game Database Discussion / Asphalt 2 / Urban GT 2
« on: July 22, 2014, 06:40:00 pm »
I had a rejected edit on Asphalt 2: Urban GT to change the title. Here is the item:
http://vgcollect.com/item/42368

The EU game has the correct name:
http://vgcollect.com/item/57569

This game has the wrong name:

(sorry today was the first time the notifications thing showed up on my menu bar)

Site Feedback / Rejected edit with no game title

I got a rejected edit in my notifications but there is no game or link to a database entry. I presume this means the item I chose to edit was deleted?

Site Feedback / Auto date fill-in when add to collection
« on: April 19, 2014, 03:22:26 pm »
Can there be an option to choose "today" along with manually entering the purchase date? By clicking the option, it would automatically fill in the current date into the drop-down options for Month/Date/Year.

It would save a lot of clicks when adding multiple items to the collection after purchase.

Classic Video Games / Warcraft II BNE disc revisions
« on: October 26, 2013, 05:56:06 pm »
Should we care about disc revisions for games where the box is not changed? For example, I can confirm that there are multiple different CD versions released in the same Warcraft II: Battle.net Edition box.
http://vgcollect.com/item/8447

From what I can tell, it breaks down like this:
2.0 = S0260270
2.01 = S7120210
2.01A = S7120211

But there is no change to the barcode or box itself.

Even so, there are versions the jewel case has a barcode and Product Key, barcode no key, no barcode no key, no barcode + key. Not sure how these were distributed.

Classic Video Games / Stonekeep versions
« on: October 26, 2013, 05:38:24 pm »
I recently got a Stonekeep version that is in a jewel case. It is the type from the US that would have been in the box and not sold separately. The disc says version 1.2. I can't find what this disc was sold in. None of the Ebay items have a version on it except for a Japanese one. I highly doubt this is from a Japanese version. So far I compiled this list. Does anyone have to add?

For some reason, Chrome detects this page as Slovak and asks to translate it.

Let's talk about this [NA] Designation. It is obvious that it is "North America" but there are some cases where it isn't good enough. I'd rather it actually be used as [US] for United States, which is actually used sparingly for some "console" such as Vita and Steam, etc. So I've been doing some research into hockey games and we run into this problem. Take this item for example:
http://vgcollect.com/item/29690
That is the Canadian release of NHL 2K6 on Xbox. Canada got Mats Sundin on the cover while the US release got Marty Turco:
http://vgcollect.com/item/302
However, the main difference in the packaging is that it is bi-lingual with English and French. And even this title isn't proper to call it the "Maple Leafs Cover" as if it was some variation. It isn't because the bi-lingual Canadian release only got Mats Sundin. The problem now lies that there is a German release of this game, in single-language German text only that also features Mats Sundin.

So we need a CA (or is it CN as I see on some things like PSP?) "console" for Xbox added so that this version can be moved to the proper location. And in addition a German XBox console for the other one.

However it may come down to being a problem concerning how games are localised and released and how they are displayed in the database. So if we stay on the Xbox example, let's look at NHL 2K3 for PS2. NHL 2K3 has (at least) these different versions:

- NHL 2K3 (US)
- NHL 2K3 (Finland/Norway)
- NHL 2K3 (Denmark)
- NHL 2K3 (Sweden)
- NHL 2K3 (Australia)
- NHL 2K3 (Germany)

This illustrates a problem of having the all-encompassing [EU] category as this game had 4 different versions in 5 European County. And the same game for Xbox has the same 4 different versions in the 5 countries. Then PC games also have this problem, which brings up (maybe) a little mystery...

- NHL 2000 (US)
- NHL 2000 Classics (US)
- NHL 2000 Naslund (Germany)
- NHL 2000 Naslund Tandem-verlag (Germany)
- NHL 2000 Naslund Green Pepper (Germany)
- NHL 2000 Naslund (UK)
- NHL 2000 Naslund (UK/Netherlands)
- NHL 2000 Naslund (Portugal)
- NHL 2000 Naslund (Finland/Sweden)

This is an incomplete list. This shows NHL 2000 has at least 9 releases for Windows. The US version has Chris Pronger on the cover but the European ones got Markus Naslund instead. The two possible issues here are...

1. Portugal. This isn't the only game where Portugal got its own release. According to my list, they only got their own PC games but that doesn't mean they didn't get their own versions for console games.

2. The two different UK versions. One that was released in the UK only and the other that was released in the UK and in the Netherlands. You probably could just say it is a Netherlands game and get away with it.

So from this example, you can see how release countries could end up being a pain, especially how it is currently set up to use categories with the country on them.

Site Feedback / Feedback on new item submit form (also searching)
« on: July 14, 2013, 03:35:14 pm »
So I like the idea that the new submit form looks for the game you are adding to cut down on the duplicates. But there is a problem with this and it relates to how searching works. Let me show some examples.

Searching for NHL 2000 shows the PC and PS releases:
http://vgcollect.com/search/nhl+2000

It however, does NOT show NHL Championship 2000. In fact, NHL Championship 2000 for PS does already exist in the database (incorrectly) as Fox Sports NHL Championship 2000.
http://vgcollect.com/search/nhl+championship+2000

Of course you'll notice a PC version in those results, that's because I just added it. Here is where the problem with the search on adding the items come in. When I added NHL Championship 2000 (for PC) it did a search for the game to make sure there you aren't adding a duplicate. The problem is that it did NOT find the existing Playstation one, which you'd figure it would since it finds it with the manual search.

I won't edit the incorrectly named Playstation entry as it may invalidate my report. To be specific, the product should be named the way I did in the PC version, where the "Fox Sports" part is the secondary name. And no, I don't know why the PC version has a Sony part number. ;)

Site Feedback / v2 Beta bug report thread
« on: July 02, 2013, 10:50:36 am »
We know that Admins have said that a lot of the site isn't working and is being worked on. I made this thread to post problems that are found, in case we end up finding one that isn't on the Beta to-do list. ;)

Using Firefox, when not logged in and looking at my profile page. By default, the first game (007) is selected and shows up in the info box on the right. If I try to click on a different one, I get a MsgBox that says failure, the a loading animation where the box artwork should be.

Site Feedback / Can I get certain categories reset?
« on: May 11, 2013, 02:32:07 pm »
Is it possible that a mod can reset only certain categories in my collection? The ones I'd need reset are:
- Gameboy Advance
- Gamecube
- Playstation US
- PS2 US
- Xbox
- Xbox 360

Thanks

Site Feedback / Search problem
« on: February 07, 2013, 07:14:19 pm »
It appears impossible to search for this game using the search or advanced search:
http://vgcollect.com/item/16817

I imagine it is because you currently are filtering out the apostrophe. I will add the barcode for it so others can find it if they have it boxed.

Site Feedback / How to add an accessory bundle?
« on: February 05, 2013, 06:33:02 pm »
I picked up a Wii game today that at first glance appears to be this one:
http://vgcollect.com/item/21537

But the one I have has a different item number: RVL P RLFE
At first glance it doesn't appear that it is any different than the one already in the database.

I got this used, but did a little research and found that the particular game I have (with this item number) is from this accessory bundle:
http://assets.dreamgear.net/manuals/DGWII-3160.pdf

dreamGear 3 in 1 bundle. The reason I ask about adding it to the database is because I don't see a clear way to find it. For example, searching for item numbers do not work. The advanced search is only for product title and barcode. This variant game has the same barcode as the regular release. Also, product records themselves are not really searchable, so if someone were to search for this game they wouldn't get 2 results. An example of this is if you search for Altered Beast, you don't see the appropriate Sega Genesis console as a search result.

Another issue is that you cannot see what a particular item includes unless you add it to your collection. So for the regular Altered Beast game, you can't see that it is case, manual, cart, insert, etc.

Site Feedback / How to remove
« on: February 01, 2013, 08:28:14 pm »
I accidently added a game I already had in my collection. I do not see a way to remove the extra game from the game page. Is there a way?

Also: I suggest that a change be made to the "Add" button if that particular item is already in the collection, so that this is more immediately obvious to the user.
