Video Game Database Discussion / Re: Release Country TLD Master List
« on: April 24, 2024, 10:38:00 am »
TLD is for the country the item is sold in, not what language is present. There is no default.

So, (Spanish cover), (Latin America), Back Code ID, anything? This needs a very specific rule, considering that the distribution chain in Latin America has always been scattered for this kind of products (My job is logistics related to the area).

No I mean there is no default TLD. Descriptors like you put above (Spanish cover, Latin America) cannot be used.
If you don't know a country the game is sold in, you can use a descriptor but the descriptor should be some sort of number that is different. I just used the back number because the only other entry was the MX version and there was no US version with that name in the category.

That is fine. I just changed the MX one to use the same reference for descriptor so for now it is easier than to figure out the country.
https://vgcollect.com/item/217221

Then how should it be done for upcoming NA releases, since there could be up to 5 versions in the region: USA (ESRB, English), Canada (ESRB, English/French), Brazil (English and/or Portuguese, ClassInd), Mexico (Spanish, SMECCV), and the rest of Latin America (English and/or Spanish, ESRB)? Do we still default Latin America for old releases (pre-SMECCV) as MX (English and/or Spanish, ESRB), unless specified in the box, and something new for the rest of the region?

TLD is for the country the item is sold in, not what language is present. There is no default.

Should it go with a (Spanish cover) descriptor or something?

No.

What country did you buy it in? You would search the used market in that country to verify other copies have the same qualities as yours.

I found an Argentina version that has a back number of 3006527-AC and UPC of 711719547624 as well as a "Sony Argentina" import label. At least it seems that the back number may be unique between versions, as it does not match your pictures.

I can't find the one in your pictures but I only searched in Mexico, Argentina, Peru, Colombia and Costa Rica.

This thread is to discuss what possible options there can be for an upcoming Style Guide Update poll in relation to what categories Accessories should go when the are branded for multiple different platforms. This primarily comes up for concern regarding modern Xbox branded items, which also extends to the games. Microsoft uses unified marketing for Xbox which relates to anything gaming related, be it on an Xbox console, Windows, or a mobile platform. There is a larger situation here and we will discuss creating sorting rules for all accessories and if a different choice is wanted for Xbox items, then that will be voted on in the future. Sony has done so as well with PlayStation in recent years.

Reminder, this is for over-arching rule and not a per-system discussion. That can be handled in the future if the poll choice

Currently, category placements for these accessories are handled in a "whatever" situation, where the item can be in any accessory category but dupes should not exist.

There are two things to consider here: branding and compatibility. Branding is typically found on first party or licensed accessories and used to match up with consoles but in recent years does not, as mentioned above. Compatibility is relating to "works with" or system requirements that are present on the packaging and is not being used to referenced real world compatibility such as Sega Genesis controllers working on Atari 2600.

Examples:
Atari Standard Joystick Controller
branding: Atari 2600
compatibility: Atari 2600, Atari 400, Atari 800

Konami Hyper Shot
branding: N/A
compatibility: MSX, Atari 2800, Sega SC3000, SG1000, NEC PC-6001, PC-6001MKII

Sony AV Cable SCPH-10030 U
branding: PlayStation
compatibility: PlayStation, PSone, PlayStation 2

PDP Disney Epic Mickey: The Power of Two Clicker
branding: Wii
compatibility: Wii, Wii U

Seagate Game Drive 5TB HDD
branding: PlayStation
compatibility: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5

Sony Pulse Explore Wireless Earbuds CFI-ZWE1 [US]
branding: PlayStation
compatibility: PlayStation 5, PC, Mobile

Microsoft Wireless Controller 1914 (Carbon Black / M1143888-001)
branding: Xbox
compatibility: Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Windows, Android, iOS

8Bitdo NES30 Pro Game Controller
branding: N/A
compatibility: Android, iOS, PC

My Arcade Extender Cable
brading: N/A
compatibility: NES Classic & SNES Classic, Wii, Wii U

Since Xbox and PlayStation branding has been adopted as umbrella brand, they cannot be considered to be "consoles" or console branding in regards to this discussion and options. While PlayStation usage matched Atari 2600 in the 90s, it no longer does in the current day. Since the XBox logo used on the Xbox Series X/S accessories was introduced in 2010 during the XBox 360 era (and originally applied to Windows APK-based platforms) it also cannot be used to signify any particular system either.

There are a few different ways to go about it:
1. use the current method as for games: oldest system first. This would put many accessories into the PC Accessory category
2. use newest system first: the opposite of games, but would put the modern PlayStation items into PS5 and the XBox Series X controllers into XBox Series X Accessory category
3. Use primary branding first (if it exists) except for PlayStation (of any era), Xbox (of any era) and then oldest system first (for items without branding)
4. Use primary branding first (if it exists) except for PlayStation (of any era), Xbox (of any era) and then newest system first (for items without branding)
5. Change the site to allow an accessory to be listed in multiple categories: There is a plan for this, but dev time is low and I can't promise that this would get done in a timely fashion or ever.
6. Keep it as "wherever" placement as long as there isn't any dupes.

For the above, any accessory with a system that has no accessory category would be put into Other Accessory.

And for reference, there is a post I created in the Adv Guide to help determine where games end up, which is helpful for at least Micros, but any rules adopted based on release of a system would use this as reference as well:
https://vgcollect.com/forum/index.php/topic,10837.msg200323.html#msg200323

Please post any additional ideas or options you think would work. And remember this is for the overall rule for accessories and a future poll may be requires for unified branded items like Xbox or PlayStation if people believe that the overall rule does not properly apply to those, but also keep in mind these two examples for this rule as well.

If we can find an easy way to distinct the companies then we can certainly do it. It isn't like Mobygames where they have a wiki-like design and they actually have pages for all these different versions of Atari (and everything else) that makes it easier to use as reference. And while anyone could just use Mobygames to reference it, we can't expect everyone to do that and I can tell you that 99.9% of our users don't know there even is a difference or don't care. And frankly we should want to be at or get to a point where we don't need to rely on an outside website to manage our information. And then the other issue is that other reference websites have conflicting information. So 1 Atari to rule them all is way easier as far as attributes on a game database goes.

Atari full name is "Atari Inc."
-> Ataris Videogame division (including Home Computers) was sold to to "Jack Tramiel" (in 1984 - yes the previous owner of Commodore) which was named Atari Corporation or Atari Corp.
-> Ataris Arcade division was sold to Namco (1985) which was named Atari Games. End of 1990s Warner bought them back was integrated into Midway. For some time they used the Name "Atari Games" but as a company was integrated into Midway. Midway as a company also ceased to exists and is part of Warner Bros Games by now.
--> Atari Games video game subsidiary was Tengen
-> Technically there was a Telecommunications division which was sold to an electronic company. But for the focus of this page irrelevant.
-> Atari Inc was renamed after all that to Atari Holding but never produced anything, was afaik only to hold rights and maybe some estates. It was integrated into parent company Warner in Mid 90s without producing anything as far as I know. For the purpose of this side Atari Inc died in 1985.
-> Atarisoft is a Label of Atari Inc up to 1984 to release Atari catalogue for different systems like Intellivision, C64, PC and so on. The label died with Jack Tramiel takeover of the video game division, which did not release games for other systems up until IBM PC release of Tempest 2000.
-> Atari Interactive is complicated. It is the current company promoting Atari. It sees itself as descendant of Atari Inc. For that a understanding of history in Atari Corp is required. Atari Corp was sold to/merged with a disk drive manufacturer JTS. Thus Atari Corp as a company ceased to exist. After bankruptcy of JTS all remains including the right of the name Atari was bought by Hasbro. Hasbro sold the video game division Hasbro Interactive (including rights to Atari) later to Infogrames. Infogrames renamed itself to Atari SA and created/renamed its USA division to Atari Interactive. After the bankruptcy of Atari/Infogrames - Atari Interactive was one of the few bits of the company that survived. After sold out most of the more modern franchise games the company still exists. In short no there are a different companies just with the rights on the logo and name of Atari.

The issue seems to be that there are multiple Atari companies that are legally distinct over the course of history.
1. Syzygy -> Atari Inc -> Atari Games -> Atari Holdings
2. Atari Corporation -> JTS -> Hasbro Interactive -> Infogrames Interactive -> Atari Interactive
3. GT Interactive -> Infogrames -> Atari Inc

Now, we don't add the legal type to companies, be it things like Inc, LLC, etc.
Atari Inc has been merged with Atari.
Even if we did decide to start using the legal types, I can't think of a good way to differentiate between the two different Atari Inc.
Then there is the situation where the existing entries in the database that should have Atari Corporation may have just Atari instead, and the large amount of entries that are probably going to have Atari set instead of Atari Interactive or Atari Games.

So what I am recommending next is that we merge down Atari Corporation into Atari as well, and add Atari Holdings (if you think there is a reason to add it) and keep Atari Interactive as is.

No it isn't. Currently there is Atari in the system which is Warner owned Atari. There are 3x Ataris. in Early 1990s they have nothing to do with each other. Atari Corp. owned by Tramel, Atari Games former Namco owned and Atari Holding which is still owned by Warner.
Btw it would be nice to see which of the Mods discarded this.

It was me, to perhaps spur discussion about Devs list. As some cleanup work has been done in the list, but there are still duplicates.

Is Atari not Atari Corporation or the other way around? There are 5 options:
Atari
Atari Corporation
Atari Games
Atari Interactive
Atarisoft

Are all of these valid? Should Atari be removed and add Atari Holding instead?
Or should all of them be just changed to Atari?

https://vgcollect.com/item/11648

is a frankenstein entry:

data and cartridge pictures fits: 1983 Atari INC release
https://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-2600-vcs-jungle-hunt_7357.html

back cover fits: 1988 Atari CORP release
https://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-2600-vcs-jungle-hunt_18228.html

front cover could be either 1988 release or 1987 Atari CORP release
https://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-2600-vcs-jungle-hunt_18227.html

could this please be resolved. I could provide better pictures for a '88 release

It looks like front image is original and all the rest was added later, so everything was removed except the front image. So make it either of the two entries that you say are related to the front cover.

- Palm cat changed to PDA
- moved Psion Series 3 sub-cat from Psion cat to PDA cat
- deleted Psion cat
- created Pocket PC sub-cat in PDA cat

Palm OS predates Windows CE, so the Tennis Addict game will have to be put into the Palm OS sub-cat

Pocket PC is a class of device, and those devices run various versions of the Microsoft Windows CE or Windows Mobile OS.
Windows version requirements on the boxes are for Microsoft ActiveSync, which is a program used to transfer files to the Pocket PC/PDA itself and cannot be used to play games or run programs. So this makes it so they should not end up in a PC sub-cat.

Using this first example, the system requirements list PC specs as well as PDA. Being a multi-format item, this item would be put into PC [NA] since PC is older than the iPaq or Pocket PC.

If there is an example where it does not work on PC, then we can consider it.

Quick clarification to my edit. (As it is a bit Strange)
Seemingly the FIFA 11 release is unique in the series as it does not follow the set pattern.
It appears that the First item is a cross AT and CH Release while the Second item is just AT. As such I'm having to use the item number as a descriptor.

As these item numbers appear on the back, you need to put in description

Other back item number: n
