General / PS5 Showcase Announced - Wed. Sept. 16th
« on: September 13, 2020, 09:54:05 am »

With Microsoft having finally broken the stalemate between the two, Sony is now ready to show us more on the PS5. About time too given that we're what... maybe 2 months away from launch?

Details from Playstation Blog:

"Our next digital showcase will weigh in at around 40 minutes, and feature updates on the latest titles from Worldwide Studios and our world-class development partners.

Tune in live on Twitch or YouTube this Wednesday, September 16 at 1pm PDT / 9pm BST / 10pm CEST to see what’s next for PS5."

Looks like there will be quite a few streaming options for the event. You can watch the 40 second teaser either on the PS Blog link above or here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umfhduWXCCc

My take:

I personally expect that we'll FINALLY get a price, a release date, some gameplay footage and maybe confirmation on a couple games that will be day one releases. I'm personally hoping to see the PS5 with optical drive come in at $500 or less. I also want to see the back of the system to see if they have a couple USB ports in the back for VR and an external drive. I'd rather not have a mess of cords in front like with my PS4.

As far as games go, I expect to see more of what we've already seen and nothing new announced. I'll always hold out hope for a new Uncharted, but I'm guessing that might be announced at a later time (if I'm lucky).

What are you hoping to see? What do you feel the price will be knowing what the new Xbox systems are priced at? Do you think preorders will go live directly after the live-stream?

General / Will PS5 and XSeX be Delayed to 2021?
« on: August 26, 2020, 01:53:01 pm »

We are about 2-3 months from the launch of the next gen systems assuming that mid November is the original target window for release. There are still many important details that neither Sony or Microsoft have released to the public.

1. Release date
2. Price of the systems
3. Day 1 launch games list

Hell, we haven't even seen the back of the PS5 yet; I'm hoping to see two regular USB ports for VR and external HDD.

I'm sure there are a handful of us that have been saving for a few months for the new system of choice, but there are many consumers that will wait for the above information to be released before they start saving up. They need these details before making the choice on what and when to purchase.

The lack of information from both companies tell me that both could easily be delayed into next year. What are your thoughts? Is 2-3 months enough time for consumers to consider buying a $400-$600 system if they haven't already been saving? If they actually release this fall as stated, I think both will suffer from a lack of sales in comparison to PS4 and X1 because of the delay of information for so long but also because of the obvious lock downs and high unemployment from the global pandemic reactions.

General / Question - Zelda on DS/3DS/2DS
« on: August 16, 2020, 07:20:43 pm »
Hey all!

My daughter has a birthday coming up and she is wanting Zelda for her 2DS. She loves playing Breath of the Wild on Switch, but she's young and not allowed to take the Switch into handheld mode. It's the family Nintendo system to be kept connected to the the TV. She wants to play Zelda in her bedroom away from the siblings and I don't blame her.

I know that there is no Zelda quite like Breath of the Wild on it. That said, what do you suppose a soon to be 8 year old would enjoy that's Zelda-centric and able to play on the 2DS system? Doesn't necessarily have to be 3D in nature.

Thanks

With PS5 box art being released recently for a few games, when can we expect the next gen systems being added to the VGCollect Database?

Modern Video Games / Unreal Engine V PS5 Tech Demo
« on: May 14, 2020, 06:38:55 pm »
Very impressed with the new engine via the graphics, lighting, and physics. If you guys have yet to watch it, I recommend seeing what the next gen is going to be able to deliver. It's impressive on many levels. I also kind of wish that this playable tech demo was going to eventually be a full game. Sadly, it doesn't look like it's going to be. Seems like an interesting setting and premise though.

My hype for next gen officially started with this.

Site Feedback / User Collection Pie Chart Customization?
« on: April 24, 2020, 08:45:01 am »
Hi all!

I noticed that there's a pie chart at the bottom of the user profile showing what their collection consists of. Very cool idea. I was wondering if there's a way to customize the colors for each system in the pie chart?

Thanks for your time.

Modern Video Games / External HDD for PS4
« on: March 27, 2020, 10:52:38 am »
The last couple years have shown massive increases for install sizes on games. Ridiculous sizes of over 100GB for games like Destiny 2, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Division 2. Back in 2015 or so, I upgraded my PS4's HDD from 500GB to 1TB. It still isn't enough to keep my favorite games installed and keep playing new ones. There was so many times I've had to uninstall and reinstall. RDR2 takes about an hour just to install from the two discs.

I had had enough of it. Bought myself a 4TB external HDD for game installs. I started yesterday and will continue today for getting everything reinstalled. It took about 3 hours to transfer nearly 800GB of installs from the internal to the external. Ridiculous... but now I have a majority of my PS4 game collection ready to go. Just pop the disc in and play like the good ol'days of PS1 and PS2.

I'll also note that after transferring the data off of my PS4's internal drive, keeping only apps like Youtube and game demos, the launch PS4 is running like it was brand new again. Massive difference as the system isn't having to think as hard and dig through all the install data.

I recommend buying an external to use. Load times appear to be faster as well. If you decide to go this route, it seems you have to use the second (right) USB port as the first port doesn't like to format/use the external drives. Not sure if that's just my system.

Classic Video Games / Personal Hall of Fame
« on: January 31, 2020, 09:14:11 am »
I'm in the midst of planning a Hall of Fame for my favorite games/series through time. My plan is to take one game from the series of choice, generally the first, and put it in a shadow box with a screenshot from it 3D displayed within the box. There will be mentions of the other games in the series probably through a line at the time or bottom of the screenshot that has pics of the box arts of each. The game that's put in the shadow box will be a complete copy in as good of condition as I can find at a reasonable price. Secondary reason for this is the preservation of the game/box/instructions/ect. I may also include a sound card with a built in speaker and button activation to play a song from the game.

I'm pretty excited at the idea but it will take months if not a couple years to complete.

Current plans for my Hall of Fame is to include the following:
 - Ninja Turtles (NES) - The NES, Genesis and SNES games will be mentioned.
 - Jurassic Park (Genesis) - Game Gear, Sega CD and Rampage Edition (Gen) will be in a different shadow box for preservation.
 - Resident Evil (undecided on if original PS1 long box or the Gamecube Remake will be in the shadowbox. Only numbered games through 6 will be mentioned plus Code Veronica X and maybe Outbreak.
 - Tomb Raider (PS1)
 - Uncharted 2 (PS3)

Do any of you have plans or do you already display favorite titles as a Hall of Fame?

Modern Video Games / Playstation 5 Rumored to be Shown Tonight at CES.
« on: January 06, 2020, 09:51:18 am »
"The Future is Coming"

Looks like Sony is rumored to be showing off the PS5 tonight (Monday, 1/6) at CES. Their press conference starts at 5PM PT / 8PM ET, 1AM in London, 12PM on Tues, Jan 7th in Sydney.

Every generation has me a little less hyped, but at the potential full reveal of a new system, I always tend to get a bit excited. Here's hoping we at least get to see the system and/or controller. Announcement of what innovations there are. Maybe a couple of the games coming too it.

I don't expect the exact release date, pricing or full launch lineup.

What are your hopes to see if the PS5 is actually revealed tonight?

Classic Video Games / Game that Never Released that You Wish Had?
« on: January 05, 2020, 05:36:56 pm »
Hey all!

As I'm sure you can tell, I'm new here. I was a Sega kid back in the early 90's and I still have and really enjoy both my Genesis and Game Gear. I'm finishing up my Game Gear collection and looking over all released games for the handheld and there is one glaring omission that really gets me down sometimes. There was never a Ninja Turtles game for the Sega Game Gear. This was due to Konami having the rights to make the games and a deal between them and Nintendo that didn't stop until near the end of the lifespan of that generation. Thus, there was never a push to put a Turtles game on the less successful handheld.

Still.... the superior technology in the Game Gear always had me scratch my head and wonder what a Ninja Turtles game would have been like on the system. I'm currently in the middle of a project bringing a hypothetical Ninja Turtles game to life. My initial plan was to mod Streets of Rage 2 to have the Turtles in it similar to the Genesis mod of the same game. Due to encryption issues though, I had to let that idea pass me up. Instead, I'm doing everything from drawing 8bit screenshots to coming up with a story and creating an instruction manual for the hypothetical game. It's as close as I'm going to get I suppose. A fun project that's time consuming, but that's basically the only game I can think of that I wish had been created, but never was.

What about you guys? Do you have a favorite system from back in the day that simply never got a game that you were hoping for? Maybe it got a game but it didn't live up to the potential? What's your story?
