I always found it bizarre that the third party expansions packs available on the market are either the same or even more expensive than used genuine Nintendo ones. I have no ideal why anyone would take a chance buying one of those cheap third party ones if there’s not a substantial price break.

Has anyone tried one of those third party ones? I’ve always heard people say that some games freeze and not work correctly with them.

That's not disc rot. That is what I described with the top reflective layer (or artwork) coming off. This occurs with CDs because the top printed layer is the reflective layer. Unlike DVDs or newer formats that have plastic above the reflective layer.
Disc rot looks like this:

This is most certainly disc rot. Nothing was peeling off you can scrape the top of the disc with your fingernail and it was completely smooth.

The reflective layer is not on the top side of the disc it is sandwiched in the middle. Disc rot happens when the reflective layer due to manufacturing error is not sealed completely. Exposure to air causes the reflective layer to oxidize. If there is no reflective layer than the laser has nothing to reflect off of.

Disc rot is rare outside of Laser Disc's and very early CD pressing from certain manufacturing plants in the early to mid 80’s. I’ve actually acquired a CD this year from a Goodwill which had a huge amount of disc rot.

How's this for disc rot. Disc 1 from The Rolling Stones Hot Rocks CD I found at a Goodwill. The other disc had it too but not nearly as bad.

Hardware and Tech / Re: Non black PS1 Disc?

Is it a Greatest Hit release? I could swear I've seen silver-bottomed GH releases on PS1 before.

There isn't a GH version of Spider. Also it's grey not silver. If you shine a strong light on it than it appears blue.

Here's some more pics of it.

From what I understand, a plant in China (or Hong Kong as the name suggests) had illegally pressed some (extra) PlayStation games and sold outside of normal Sony channels. They are known as Hong Kong Silvers.

Definitely not a HK silver. Those require either a mod chip or disc swapping to boot. The artwork and instruction manual and printing on the disc are as high quality and legit looking as any other PS1 game I've seen.

I’m now thinking maybe it’s a factory error. Maybe they were running low on the dye or whatever they used to make the discs black.

Hardware and Tech / Non black PS1 Disc?
« on: February 21, 2017, 08:31:43 pm »
I recently obtained a copy of Spider for the PS1, and upon expection I noticed the disc wasn't black more blueish or gray depending on the light level. At first I concluded it must a bootleg, yet I tried it anyway in a couple different non-chipped Playstations and it booted perfectly fine. As far as I know pirates have never been able to create a self booting PS1 disc yet so I'm thinking it has to be real. Has anyone ever seen something like this?

Classic Video Games / Re: What is your least favorite controller?
« on: October 01, 2016, 10:19:18 pm »
The US Atari 7800 Proline controllers are the worst first party controller I’ve personally have ever used. They are incredibly uncomfortable and people will often complain of hand cramping after using them for long sessions.

The early versions of the Master System controller annoy me because their cord comes out the right side of the controller. The only comfortable way for me to hold it is to let the cord run in between my middle and index finger. Early versions also had that stupid screw hole for that optional joystick and the covers for them always seem to be missing.

Many people crap on the Intellivision’s controller I for one don’t mind it. The Intellivision II’s controller one the other hand is much worse. The numeric keypad has no tactile feedback at all. Also the side buttons don’t have much if any travel. So it doesn’t feel like your actually pressing them like a button instead it feels like you're just applying pressure. I hate the Intellivision II controller so much I actually wired a model 1 controller to work on the console.

Classic Video Games / Re: What is the oldest game you own?

I have most of the 9 Atari 2600 launch tittles

Air Sea Battle
Combat
Indy 500
Star Ship
Street Racer
Surround
Video Olympics

Only missing Basic Math and Black Jack. Outside of collecting there is no reason to own anything older than Atari 2600 unless you’re just really into Pong for some reason.

General / Re: Will i like the game The 3rd Birthday
« on: September 02, 2016, 09:48:25 pm »
You won’t need to have played any of the PE games to follow the 3rd birthday’s storyline since it’s really not connected to the first two games in any significant way. The 3rd birthday's gameplay is a tactical third person cover based shooter with light RPG elements. As for my opinion I enjoyed the game quite a bit and have played it through a couple times. I’d give it a 7.5/10.

Hardware and Tech / Re: Genesis Model 1 A/c Adapter.
« on: May 26, 2016, 01:52:43 pm »
I'm pretty sure you can use a Turbografx 16 power supply, if you happen to have one.
The TG16 supply is rated for 730ma which is even lower than those 3-1 things that are 850ma. Since people complain that those things don't power the Genesis correctly I'd avoid anything lower than 1 amp.

Early board revisions of the Genesis model 1 use two 7805 voltage regulators and later ones only use one. So I would assume that the later revisions would require less current. The Genesis model 2 only has 1 regulator and uses a 850ma supply. So if you have a later version model 1 you might be able to get away using one of those 3-1 jobs.

Video Showcase / Re: The Hardest Games Ever?
« on: May 25, 2016, 09:42:13 pm »
A game I just recently obtained for the Genesis Target Earth is pretty ridiculous probably the hardest game I've played on the system thus far. Also kind of a polarizing game too from things I read some people seem to love it others hate it.

The official power supply is rated for 10V 1.2a DC with a polarity of outer barrel positive inner negative. The power connector size is 5.5 x 2.1. You can run it off any DC power supply with the same polarity ranging between 9-12V with at least 1 amp or over. You can also use a Atari Jaguar or Sega Master System supply with a model 1 Genesis. You can't use a NES power supply or any others with a AC output doing so can wreck your system.

Also try to avoid those small switch mode power supplies as they generate a ton or EMI/RFI noise and a lot of Chinese manufactures will leave out filtering components that they're supposed to have to save money. What this means is they can create interference in your picture. Ideally what you want in a nice heavy Class 2 transformer type supply.

Classic Video Games / Re: Winback?????????

Winback is overlooked for sure. Plays like a combo of Metal Gear Solid and Syphon Filter and is the only game you're gonna find on the 64 like it. It is also one of the pioneers of third person cover based shooting, four years before Kill Switch and seven before Gears of War.

General / Re: Is Twilight Princess good?
« on: May 04, 2016, 01:22:55 am »
There is also a gamecube version with pretty much the best controller ever made. I don't see the problem in controls.

The wii version is cheaper but one cannot simply ignore the gamecube version. Especially since grapics wise the gamecube and wii are pretty much the same.

The wii isn't better aside from some motion control gimmicks. The hardware was not much improved the two games are pretty much identical.

The funny thing is that the grapics are a bit better on gamecube since the component cable better than the wii component cable. funny thing since it is an older console.

Because of those gimmicky motion controls they had to mirror the Wii port so the sword would be in Links right hand. Because of this the Gamecube version is usually viewed as the definitive version. The only positive thing that can be said about the Wii version is that is supports 16X9 while the GC version does not.

Twilight Princess was my least favorite Zelda at the time of it's release aside from Majoras Mask, but it has grown on me over the years with repeated playthroughs. It's definitely a masterpiece when compared to Skyward turd.
