Classic Video Games / Re: Physical Quality of Carts
« on: October 25, 2017, 06:57:38 pm »
I must be in the minority. I haven't had a real issue with carts being damaged. If anything, the only issue I'm finding is marker on outside of carts, but nothing too damaging overall.

I'm thankful that I don't collect anything too old, but it's getting tougher and tougher for me to find CIB GBA games nowadays  :'(

And if you do find them, you run the risk of them possibly being bootlegs.  :(

Bootlegs are another reason why I don't really go the CIB route. There are too many variables involved for the cash involved.

For GBA cib games are actually a thing that will decrease the chance of bootleg games by allot.

While there are bootleg boxes they are easy to spot and the quality is lacking allot. It is way to much effort to track down an original box and manual just to put a fake cart inside.

Even with nes and snes there are hardly any high quality fake boxes out there very few and usually they are very easy to spot also the proffesional ones.

You make some very valid points. I guess bootleggers are willing to put more effort into their product if they know the return is worth it. Makes perfect sense.

I paid $60 for my 9.5/10 box/manual and maps for NES Dragon Warrior IV.

Wow! I've been wanting to get into the CIB world, but entry is so steep!

Retro - Working on GTA2 on PS1. In modern, I'm working through Stardew Valley on Switch and also Overwatch on XB1. I can't stop. It's a rough, rough addiction! I need those halloween skins!

Have you played Stardew Valley on other platforms? I'm curious how it all compares between the various platforms.

Yes! I've played it on PC before making the jump onto the Switch. In my opinion, it looks and feels exactly the same. The only difference is the load/save times on switch are much longer than on PC. But that is my only gripe. It's worth picking up! They really made the controls very intuitive as well, which was a worry of mine when I first heard that it was going to the Switch.

With how much time and long nights I put into this game on pc, and my Switch shipping soon, this sounds like a bad/amazing combination for sitting in bed and not sleeping.

You’re basically describing me. The only difference is that I’m catching myself playing on the couch while the Mrs. watches TV. I don’t know how many hours I’ve put into it, but it has to be pretty close to my Zelda addiction I had at launch!

EVERY SINGLE GAME I HAVE EVER SOLD TO GAMESTOP!

THIS. It cringes me to know I've done this more than a few times.

Ideally: Bring back additional rpg mechanics, put in meaningful dialogue and sidequest choices with interesting story lines, make siding with different factions have more of an impact,  less dev time, and use a new engine

Realistically: Todd Howard will hype us up for FO5, only to end up being another ehhhhhhh game within 6 months of release.

Bethesda's internally developed products from the last few years have been dissapointing, and i don't expect much to change, especially from a management standpoint.

In a little late here, but I agree with the RPG mechanics. If we can have more meaningful dialogue and sidequests, it would be fantastic! I put countless hours into FO4, but I started to get burned out after awhile. The only thing that kept me going after awhile was the mods release.

The first game I ever remember fully playing was Super Mario 64 when I was 3 years old in 1999 :).  My dad bought me an N64 for either christmas or my birthday that year with a few games. Smash went on to be a top 5 game of all time for me and one of the most nostalgic and sentimental titles I own and love :D.

One of my favorite games of all time. I’m dating myself, but I was 10 when it came out and I was hooked!
You’re dating yourself?
I just said my first was Space Invaders...and the cabinet was located by a Sears customer service counter, back when arcade games were found in all kinds of places, like restaurant waiting rooms. Now THAT’s dating yourself  ;D

But, I bet someone here started back on the Magnavox Odyssey, or Pong, or maybe even Spacewar on an oscillator  ;)

Ha! you make a good point. I have to say, I remember seeing arcades in almost all pizza joints I would end up at when I was younger. Though the one that really stood out to me was Mortal Kombat. That cabinet was everywhere!

I'll tell you what the Switch need more than anything.  It need to completely ripoff Xbox Live.  Get that damn online working.  Give us some party chat.  Do it now!

Yes to all of this! I picked up the switch on launch day and I’ve had a ton with it, but I’m still waiting for more features to be released. Picking up Super Mario Odyssey and Doom in the next few weeks. I just need to budget so I can still leave some dough for my retro pickups.

My goodies from Portland Retro Gaming Expo, my first gaming expo! (It was awesome.)

Einhander (PS1) and Lunar the Silver Star Complete (PS1) are two from my "Holy Grails" list, so that is awesome. Strike Gunner (SNES) & Wonder Boy in Monster Land (Master System) have been on my wishlist for far too long, so it's cool to see those get knocked off, too. The others are ones I got cheap there.

The book is by Brett Weiss, who was there, and signed the inside cover, as well as the copy of the 1989-1990 Edition I also owned and took with me to get signed.

The booklet in the upper corner is the program guide/contents of the event, and the badge below that. Up top is a free bag that they gave you.

So many awesome pick ups! Willow has a soft spot in my heart. One of my favorite movies of all time. And to think I’ve never played the game! Now I need to have it!

This looks really good! I've been debating on making my own shelves, but I wasn't too sure how I wanted them to look. You gave me some inspiration. For sure! I think the only thing I would change with your current setup, is I would have stained the wood. Fantastic work!

They'll look great stained, we plan on doing a dark stain with the ones we build for the movie theatre.  Might I also suggest not going over 4' in length on each shelf?  5' might be too long unless you're using some kind of metal brace on the backside?

Post some pics when you're done!!

Thank you for the suggestion. I’ll keep that in mind whe. I finally take the plunge on building these. I’ll surely post pics with my specs. I’m hoping I can get to them before years end!
