General / Re: Games you beat the same day you bought them?
« on: May 10, 2021, 05:27:22 pm »
If I exempt short indie games and visual novels... I beat Catherine: Full Body the day it came in. It's about 10 hours long per playthrough? I forget exactly. Helped that I was obsessed with the original and knew all the puzzle techniques so I got through on the quicker side of average.

I also bought a copy of Spongebob Squarepants: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman for nostalgia reasons and obliterated it the day it arrived. My husband was kind of shocked as he watched me relentlessly play. XD I was so stoked since I couldn't beat it as a kid.

For me a big killer is that right now is that import options for Japanese games are abysmal due to restrictions on shipping. They're a huge chunk of my whishlist. I got a SFC and a Japanese 3ds with no games to play. So I'm just working through my minna no nihongo books for now.

I also just moved and everything is in boxes. Had to settle for a bit of a fixer upper cause my city is plagued with Californian refugees buying normal houses over list. Not getting to the games any time soon. All I have out is my switch.

The last issue is finding a way to make my retro consoles look good on my tv. It's hard to justify the price of a framemeister.

A cookbook is interesting, did the games add a cooking mechanic? Haven't played past the original few games as a kid on the PS1. They were pretty hard so I never managed to beat them though. I'd love to see HD rereleases like many so I could easily play again. PS2 still hates my modern TV. I really need to try and invest in new cables or something when I get a chance. I just moved so I'm building and renovating what'll be my game room/reliquary. I haven't gotten my hands on the new games though. Probably won't happen soon with the house stuff, but I might lurk a bit and see which ones are peoples favorites.

I'd watch the anime is it's actually an anime though. Sounds fun. I was so bummed by Castlevania's series because I expected an anime when it wasn't. I also spent the entire first episode not realizing Lisa was THAT Lisa. Really I also struggled to recognize almost any other characters until I got their name do to the massive style shift. Hype trains and high expectation can really kill a series for me. Also, please don't say it's because I am a weeb and hate American animation. It's solely about expectations for me in this case. I felt bait and switched. However, a movie anime would have maybe been the best. I'd love to see Laura Croft in an anime movie tier wilderness with vivid wilds and highly animated animals. Makes me want to drool just thinking of it.

I got a tatakon for the switch this Christmas... the sensitivity is worse than I thought. I want to love it though. Might have to mod it.

I use wire ties or Velcro ties. Frequently I just scavenge them off new stuff I buy. I use this in combo with an HDMI switcher so I don't need to frequently change out cords. I also reserve my least played consoles to only being out and plugged in when I want to play them. I put them in dedicated drawers in my tv stand with all their bobbins when I'm done.

For GoTY I'm leaning into Ghost of Tsushima if Cyberpunk doesn't dethrone it. Didn't play myself but saw my SO playing it and it looks top notch. I mostly just sat around and gawked at the attention to Japanese culture, history, and terrain.

I feel like CDPR is a lot of people's darling dev company right now though so I think it could steal a last minute win. Meanwhile, I'm still here licking my wounds that there's no Media option. Really they got rid of all the face classes. I still ordered the game, but ouch it's a lot less classes than they initially promised.

I got a few retro protection covers in summer 2019 (1 amiibo, Let's Go! Pikachu size, and 1 Funko pop)  and they all served me well, protecting my cardboard during a cross country move. I now display them in the cases. There's a little glare, but the only one that's really noticeable is the amiibo since it's not fitted. I can't recommend them enough.

Yeah, I stick to goodwill and the net. I've seen mind mindbogglingly expensive prices at pawn shops and such as of late. I'll never understand collector influencers so I don't watch them, but the bubbles are pretty obvious sometimes. Just wait them out, they usually seem to pop eventually when everyone who has one suddenly want to sell it to cash in.

"introductory priceā€ of $5.99 a month during it's Early access...

That worries me this could be really pricey down the road. Also, you'll need fire stick for tv connection I think? Could get pricey quickly if you want all the bobbins. Plus it looks like you'll have to pay for more games. I already saw a section for in the future that looks like you can purchase an Ubisoft games channel. I just don't know if I'd play enough to get my money's worth. Subscriptions are tricky. Really depends on the person if you'll get your money's worth or not.

I got a switch at launch so I'd know I had one when Splatoon 2 came out. Got mine in my backwoods walmart without a fuss. Nintendo handhelds are usually high priority for me. I also had a launch day New 3ds. Otherwise, I tend to wait on consoles to price drop. They don't usually have a good launch library anyway. Now though it's hard to want consoles at all when PC is an option. I find myself getting most ps4 games on the switch or PC instead.

Yakuza
The World Ends With You
Yokai Watch (I played in jp. I hear there are changes, but I don't know how many. I think they shamelessly just called it America.)
Shin Megami Tensei Series
Muramasa: The Demon Blade
Nightshade (An otoge about the Kouga and Iga ninja clans after their merger, but the romance is a bit light in many of the routes.)

I'm no platformer aficionado, but I always have to throw in my two cents.

Favorites: Mario Sunshine and Odyssey, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage
I can play any of these over and again.

Least favorite: Croc
I remember having this as a child. So slippery, weird physics/momentum. I hated it. Too bad, as it was kind of cute.

Yeah, I think it's going to be soon. I can't say I like the photo-realistic stuff, but I think stylized games will benefit as well from these advancements. I don't however think that graphics will end the console generations like some people I have encountered. I suspect they'll start competing over other things like improved speeds and features.

I chase high scores in rhythm games, but only trying to beat my personal bests. Online leader boards are too competitive for my blood.

General / Re: What is your favorite Game OST?
« on: August 12, 2020, 02:21:08 pm »
The World Ends With You OST always blew me away, especially for being on the DS. It fit really well and still feels pretty unique. It's something that doesn't even always feel like game music when shuffled in with my normal music.

Honorable mentions:
Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
Catherine
