News / UPDATE - The long over-due update
« on: November 05, 2015, 08:38:01 pm »
Hello all,

It's been a looooong time without any sort of updates from me - and well that isn't a good thing. VGCollect has been my baby for years but over the past 12 months it's been ever more apparent that I no longer have the time to properly support the site the way it deserves. As most of you know I work a full time development job and recently (well it's been nearly 2 years now) started another side business that is growing month over month. That leaves me with little free time. I used to hit the forums daily, work on the site weekly and have a constant stream of updates. Nowadays I've almost avoided the site because I felt guilty for basically abandoning it. If it wasn't for our amazing group of staff members and our AMAZING community, the site would have surely faded away. You guys have made this site what it is today - something we all take great pride in.

That all being said, a few things are going to change here. Some of you may have noticed a new name in the forums lately. That name being Jason. Jason is a former coworker who was by my side a few years back during the early years of VGC. He is a very passionate collector and almost more importantly, a very passionate web developer. He will be taking over my role around here. He has had his hands on the VGC codebase and is already planning the first round of updates. More importantly, he is making progress on the mobile front.

I'm not going away, nor are any of our staff members. Most new users probably won't even notice since I've been inactive for months but I can assure you that this is for the best. I've been holding VGC down and it's time to humbly back off. I'm actually kinda excited to step back off and become a "normal" user again. Maybe I'll finally get my collection fully updated. :)

tl;dr Matt is stepping aside and Jason is taking and it's for the best.

Love,
Matt

News / Small Update - Big Bug Fix
« on: May 13, 2015, 09:34:45 am »
Hey all,

A few small updates were pushed out over the last 24 hours.

1. Finally fixed the login speed issue! If you were following more than a few people, you may have noticed that your login took forever. I was seeing over 20 seconds. This was due to the fact that the Feed was taking forever to run. Well I was able to shift some data around and optimize the query so this should now load up in well under a single second. I'm super stoked about this one as this has been an issue for a few years.

2. We pushed out an updated view of the item pages. The idea here is to simplify these pages and make room for a few new features. Two that will be coming soon are the ability to edit your games from the actual item page and larger box art. There are a few issues with the mobile view that we'll be cleaning up today.

That's all for now but more coming soon...

News / UPDATE - Few bug fixes
« on: January 28, 2015, 06:45:30 pm »
Hey all!

It's Wednesday VGC work night again! I just pushed out a fix for an issue that has been around for...forever. You can now see the correct field names on item history! I know it's small but it's one of those that has lingered.

I've also patched two other small bugs. One in regards to the Amazon pricing never updating and another which should help with some of our forum login issues. Going to be working on some more stuff tonight and will update this thread if / when I push out anything new.

Thanks!

News / UPDATE - Developers and Publishers are back and more.
« on: January 21, 2015, 08:15:25 pm »
Hey all,

We just finished testing and pushing out an update to bring back the developers and publishers. For now this is only available when you edit an item as we are in the process of cleaning up the database. The old system allowed anyone to create a new entry which caused loads of duplicates and typos. We are using that list as our starting point but will be cleaning it up over the next few weeks. Once we feel like we have a good handle on it we'll roll out the devs and pubs to the create screen.

For now - new developers and publishers will have to be requested through the forum.

I also pushed out a fix for a login issue some people were having. If you've ever updated your email address on the site chances are your forum login / settings were screwed up. This updated corrects this and will keep things in sync going forward.

Let me know if you have any issues!

Thanks,
Matt

News / UPDATE - New staff and more
« on: January 14, 2015, 08:28:11 pm »
Hello all,

As you've hopefully noticed, we've been trying to get back in the swing of things around here. Scott and I are back to our weekly VGCollect work nights each Wednesday which will allow us a dedicated night to knock out a ton of updates and maintenance items. I'm working through a back log right now but we have a bunch of features / fixes and updates in the works that we'll be slowly rolling out.

VGCollect is continuing to grow at a great rate. In order to help with these, we've decided to promote pacpix to a staff position. Believe it or not but he has had an account with VGC since August 21st of 2011. He will be helping us with approvals, forum moderation and other site duties. Please welcome him aboard!

We'll be pruning the admin positions in the coming weeks and hopefully adding another new face to the team. Stay tuned...

As for other updates my current focus is on 3 items:

1. New grid/shelf view
2. Reimplementing devs and pubs
3. Better category organization

More news coming on those fronts within a week.

Thanks!
Matt

News / Coming soon...looking for feedback.
« on: January 11, 2015, 01:00:02 pm »
Hey all,

I hope everyone had a great holiday season! As you may have noticed we have not been very active with updates over the past few months. Sometimes real life gets in the way but we are getting ready to move forward with a round of updates. In addition to a few bug fixes one thing we want to roll out is a new way to view your main collection. Here is a small preview:

You'll be able to toggle between "list" and the new "shelf" view. I'm looking for feedback on how you think this should be implemented. Here are my thoughts as of now:

1. The default view will still be the list view. If a user isn't logged in, they'll have the ability to toggle the view but that will only be for that session.
2. If you are logged in, you can toggle the view which will be stored as a preference on your account. Whatever you select will be how you see collections sitewide.

Any thoughts or suggestions on this implementation?

Thanks!
Matt

« on: November 11, 2014, 06:27:21 pm »
Earlier today I noticed a huge spike in traffic and new users. I dug through our access logs and found out that we were mentioned in this article:

So far we've had nearly 100 new users sign up! Let me be the first to welcome all you noobs!

News / CERO ratings have been added
« on: November 07, 2014, 09:14:23 am »
As to not pollute the other thread, I'll post the update here. I've added the CERO ratings for the Japanese games. I've also gone through and updated the labels on the other ratings just to standardize things a bit. They are now listed as:

Rating Type - Rating (Main Region)

Examples: ESRB - M (US / Canada)

Thanks!

Site Feedback / Multiple currency support
« on: November 06, 2014, 09:47:44 am »
Hey all,

I've got a bunch of updates in development right now and one of them is the ability to select a currency type other than US dollars. A lot of our non-US users have requested this. I'm looking to you to decide what currencies we should support. This will be a new option in your user settings.

Thanks!

News / Update: Image Galleries available to all!
« on: April 15, 2014, 09:09:31 pm »
Hey all,

Long time - not many updates. Things have been quite busy in my world but I still have a bunch of updates in the progress.  After a bit more than a month in testing we just opened up image galleries to everyone. The image limits are still there and we'll be evaluating those just to make sure we have a healthy balance between usability and disk space. Let us know if there are any issues.

Thanks,
Matt

News / Update: Image Galleries!
« on: February 25, 2014, 05:43:05 pm »
Say what!?

That's right. After much deliberation we have decided to add image galleries to the list of VGCollect features.

Screen:

Example:
http://vgcollect.com/gallery/scott

During this testing phase we are limiting users to 20 image uploads at 2 meg max size per image. The galleries are active and available now for all Pro users to test out.

To visit your gallery just browse over to http://vgcollect.com/gallery/insertusernamehere.

On another note - I'll be on vacation starting this Saturday, March 1st until the following Sunday. During that time I will actually be without internet...

...

I'm not totally sure how I'll cope but I'll obviously not be able to reply to requests/comments/complaints/etc. Feel free to keep em coming though as the other VGC staff dudes will be ready and willing to help.

That being said, I wouldn't expect these new galleries to open to non-Pro users until the week of March 9th. Feel free to post your thoughts or bug reports here and hopefully I can address them all before I take off.

Thanks!
Matt
