Off Topic / So, that Mario Movie trailer...

What did you all think of it? I loved the animation and Jack Black as Bowser, not too sure about Mario's look or voice though.

Video Game Database Discussion / Atari Mania clarifications
« on: August 31, 2022, 07:30:45 pm »
So, later this year (at an indeterminate date), a game studio known as Illogika has plans to release a game known as Atari Mania, a love letter to Atari games of the past coinciding with the company's 50th anniversary. However, many of my edits to the Nintendo Switch entry have been rejected, and I'd like to clear up some issues:
1-The game's developers stated they wished to put the game on Nintendo Switch, but didn't say whether physically or digitally. I logged it as physical for the site's database initially because I wanted to put it on my wishlist, and I personally prefer owning the physical version of a Switch game if I can help it. (Just a brief side note, the game's page on the Atari website only has a Steam and Atari VCS release on queue, so maybe the Switch version has since been cancelled)

2-The "box art" I uploaded, I copied from the Steam page. When uploading images to digital Switch games in the past, I would rely on the page for the game on the Nintendo eShop, but alas, Atari Mania has none (likely because of the aforementioned cancellation possibility). I didn't intend for it to be there permanently, just a replacement until something official was released.

3- The "box text" field I copied and pasted from the Atari Mania website, because I assumed that was what Nintendo would use on their site if the game actually had a page there.

But yeah that's about it. I hope the Switch version isn't cancelled like I'm pretty sure it might be, but it was initially listed as such, so I'll keep it in my wishlist anyway until I get outright confirmation. Thanks admins for bearing with me!

3
I'm pretty sure (even though E3 is cancelled) Nintendo will just hold a direct in June anyway, since Microsoft is also doing an expo around E3 time, and Sony just held a conference. What do you think Nintendo might show/reveal? I'm hoping to get more information/a trailer for the upcoming Mario movie, and maybe an announcement for GBA games on Nintendo Switch Online.

If there isn't one, I'd love to start one! If there is, may I join?

General / What are your opinions on the Lego games?
« on: May 17, 2022, 12:53:34 am »
I personally think that the series of LEGO games (that is, those made by TT Games) have a unique style, with great comedy, fun puzzles, and great character selection (well, the earlier ones could use something to be desired). Overall, I like them! But I was curious to hear other peoples' perspectives, especially since the general opinion I've heard is that the original Lego Star Wars, Batman, and Indiana Jones are good, but none of the others. I disagree, and I'd like to also share my opinions on them.

Lego Star Wars 1/2/Complete Saga: Fun from what I remember, but I need to replay these.
Lego Indiana Jones: I thought the levels were too slow, and didn't care much to play past around the third one, but I can understand why others might enjoy it.
Lego Batman: I didn't like some bits, but it was a nice time (again, I need to replay this one)
Lego Battles: Haven't played
Lego Rock Band: I tried to play this one as a young child before realizing I needed a Rock Band instrument to play, so that sucked.
Lego Indiana Jones 2: Haven't played
Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4: I thoroughly enjoyed this one! I strongly enjoy the Harry Potter franchise, and I feel this is both a good adaptation with a great character selection, and fun puzzles (I especially liked collecting the character tokens)
Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars: Haven't played
Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Jack Sparrow compass puzzles are kind of tedious, but I also really love this one, especially the environments!
Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7: I'm torn as to whether I like this or the first one more, but this might have a slight edge for the expanded hub world.
Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes: The first Lego game I've ever played, nearly 10 years ago, and I STILL haven't 100%'ed it. Frankly, I don't mind the fact that the games from here forward have voice acting. I like the open world, and collecting the characters in said open world. This one will forever hold a special place in my heart.
Lego Lord of the Rings: I got annoyed by the Troll boss battle, and didn't really enjoy the crafting mechanic enough to finish it. I do like how Middle Earth looks in the game.
Lego City Undercover: Haven't played
Lego Marvel Super Heroes: I massively enjoyed the hub world (like many other lego games) and all the comic characters in-game (especially the X-Men ones)! There's something special about absolutely decimating city buses as the Hulk.
The Lego Movie Videogame: This is a pretty good adaptation of the movie, and I like the puzzles and abilities used here. The fact that everything is made of pre-existing pieces is an amazing touch
Lego The Hobbit: Didn't care for it.
Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham: I think this is the most underrated Lego game. Once again, the character selection is great, and the levels are fun to navigate.
Lego Jurassic World: A great adaptation of the film series, with some amazing dinosaur action!
Lego Dimensions: I really really really love the concept, and it's amazing to see so many properties in this one game, but it has two major cons: It's expensive if you want to play as all the characters, and the 2.0. update was rushed, and makes the game buggy as a result. I still had fun with it.
Lego Marvel's Avengers: This covers the Marvel movies from Captain America: The Avenger through Avengers: Age of Ultron, but skips over Guardians of the Galaxy, which is an utter travesty. It doesn't have as much charm as the original lego Marvel Super-Heroes, due to being somewhat restricted to the MCU films, but this was a fun time.
Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens: This is the most pointless of them all, now that Skywalker Saga has released, but it was well-made with some good gameplay, even if it was just one movie dragged out over 15 levels (With the Return of the Jedi prequel included).
Lego Worlds: I like the concept, but it, for some reason, didn't quite click with me. When it comes to digital brick-building, I prefer using Mecabricks, but the characters being all from past Lego themes was cool.
The Lego Ninjago Movie Videogame: Haven't played
Lego Marvel Superheroes 2: I love the scale and scope of the character roster, but I feel like the hub missions could've been cut back slightly. As a big Marvel Comics fan, this was a great love letter to the company's past.
Lego the Incredibles: Haven't played. But this has Lightning McQueen in it, so instant 10/10
Lego DC Super-villains: Haven't played
The Lego Movie 2 Videogame: Haven't played
Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga: Also haven't played

Here's my (somewhat) definitive list.

10: AC/DC
-I haven't listened to much of their songs, but I REALLY liked what I heard.
9: The Beatles.
-They're The Beatles, that's why.
8: Ludwig Van Beethoven.
-Because Beethoven (DUN-DUN-DUN-DUUUUUUUUUN!)
7: Christophe Heral/Billy Martin
-Only on here through their work on the Rayman Origins and Legends soundtracks. Absolute bangers.
6: Ralph Stanley.
-A bluegrass artist I was introduced to through his performance in "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" I don't much care for his old stuff, but his post "O Brother" stuff is wondrous. He has this golden voice that sounded even better as he aged. His covers of O Death and I'll Fly Away are spectacular.
5: P.O.D. (Payable on Death)
-A Nu-Metal/ Rap-rock fusion band. They're my dad's favorite and was lucky enough to see them in concert. I've listened to practically their entire back catalogue.
4: Modest Mussorgsky
-A Russian composer from the mid-1800s. His works can be described as grandiose and chilling. I adore Night on Bald Mountain to Death, but also fairly enjoyed Pictures at an Exhibition.
3: Queen.
-Freddie Mercury has the greatest voice mankind was ever graced with, not exaggerating.
2: Weird Al Yankovic
-He's amazing and no one can convince me otherwise.
1: John Williams
-The true and undisputed king of the film score (though he may one day be dethroned by Hans Zimmer).

Honorable mentions: composers Ottorino Respighi and Anatoly Lyadov because they each have one piece I really really love (Pines of Rome and Kikimora respectively).

General / How do you organize your games and consoles?
« on: April 08, 2022, 04:18:42 pm »
I have my collection organized like this:
living room shelf: GameCube, Wii, Genesis and N64 (I have the cartridges stacked between them and the PlayStation games), PS1, PS2, Xbox 360.
Bedroom Shelf: GBC, GBA, DS, 3DS, Switch (I don't have many of either).
Consoles: I play them on a goodwill-bought entertainment center, and they're organized like this:
Drawer (left to right): Blu-Ray player, Wii, Switch (The dock is kept sideways so you can put the Switch in like a sandwich).
On the middle shelf I have on the left side the N64 (stacked on top of a bunch of Tolkien books) and on the left, there is (stacked bottom to top) PS2, Xbox 360, Retron 5.
Then below that is the box where all the controllers/cables/other stuff is kept. I also keep my one careless DS game (Mario 64 DS) in a binder with coin collection inserts I bought on amazon (it's also where I keep spare PS2 memory cards).
Lastly, I keep one Atari 2600 game (Super Breakout) on top of my bedroom shelf as a display piece.

Off Topic / YouTube channel hackings!
« on: March 26, 2022, 02:51:11 pm »
I don't know how many of you know this, but Nathaniel Bandy (one of my favorite YouTubers) has gotten his channel hacked. His "brother's" channel has been terminated for violating community guidelines, and the group he's in, Minus World, has also been hacked. The hacker(s) has deleted all but one of his videos, and I have no idea what would motivate them to do this. I don't know if any one of you are experts on reclaiming YouTube channels from hacking or not, but I mainly just posted this because I wanted to spread awareness on the situation.

General / Cheapest game or console you ever bought?
« on: March 22, 2022, 09:16:41 pm »
And more importantly, did it work?
I have Super Breakout for the Atari 2600, which I found in a dollar bin at my local retro gaming store. I do not know if it works, as I do not own the console.

General / What cancelled game would you love to play if it never was?
« on: March 09, 2022, 10:03:40 pm »
Despite how hard it was on the employees, Sonic X-Treme looked genuinely fascinating and it was a take on 3D before "true" 3D gameplay existed. I would love to have tried it to see how it might have functioned.

General / Happy March! What are you all getting this month?
« on: March 01, 2022, 02:52:01 pm »
I'm hoping to buy more stuff on the 3DS eShop before it closes. The ones I want most are Wario Land II, Mario Vs. Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move, Mole Mania, and Dr. Mario Express.

12
These games could be:
-3DS eShop exclusive
-3DS games with expensive physical copies.
-DSiWare games
-Retro NES/GB/GBC/GG/SNES games that have greater value by getting them on the 3DS shop then their physical retro versions.

I'd highly recommend Rhythm Heaven Megamix. This only applies to the US, though, since it got a physical release in Japan and Europe.

General / What's the weirdest/coolest/most obscure item in your collection?
« on: February 15, 2022, 04:06:33 pm »
I'm talking cardboard standees, promotional VHS tapes, promotional items, home-brew cartridges, whatever!

Video Game Database Discussion / E10+-T rating option for Game submission?
« on: February 10, 2022, 02:00:24 am »
I would love to add the recently revealed Portal Companion Collection to the database, but the Nintendo website lists the collection as ESRB E10+-T. I would appreciate it if the option was added. Thank you mods, for all you do!

General / So... What did y'all think of the Nintendo direct?
« on: February 09, 2022, 08:36:33 pm »
Here's my general thoughts:
Fire Emblem Three whatever: I know the series does have its fans, but I don't really care for it.
Advance Wars: Interesting, but I'll have to play it before I'm sure I like the series
No Man's Sky: Don't really care. I remember it being announced like six year ago and finding it interesting... then it came out.
Mario Strikers Battle League: Can't wait! But I'll have to try the Wii version first.
Splatoon 3: Nintendo finally convinced me to give it a try.
Front Mission 1st: At first I thought it was Cyberpunk 2077. It's fine, I guess.
Disney Speedway: They did not show Lightning McQueen for some reason. I will be so mad if he's not in it.
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed: I own it on 360, so I definitely won't be picking it up.
Assassin's Creed Ezio collection: Let's hope it doesn't require a download if you buy it physically!
SD Gundam Battle Alliance: Wasn't this the rarest game for some console?
Chrono Cross: Would've vastly preferred Chrono Trigger first, or the two as a bundle. The addition of a Satellaview game was epic!
Kirby and the Forgotten Land: Can't wait!
MLB the show 22: Do not care.
Kingdom Hearts Cloud versions: Because 20 year old games are too weak for a modern console. Makes sense. I know these games are great, but I'd rather own the PS2 versions.
Klonoa: I'm SO HYPED! The originals cost a fortune secondhand now!
Portal Companion: LETS GOOOOOOOOOO
Live a Live: Thought this was Triangle Strategy. Looks interesting, but I don't think I'll play it.
Nintendo Switch Sports: At first I thought WHY NO MIIS? And then I saw they are in the game. Good on ya Nintendo!
Taiko no Tatsujin: I don't get why we have to subscribe for a song library instead of just buying them individually like for the Rock Band games.
Triangle Strategy: I'm not inclined to buy it.
Cuphead DLC: Nice addition!
Metroid Dread: God Mode and Hardcore mode look fun for those wanting it, but I haven't played Dread yet.
Earthbound/beginnings: YO LET"S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! (While Mother 3 would've been nice, these two alone show that Nintendo listens occasionally!)
Zombie Army 4/GetsuFumaDen/Demon Slayer/Lego Brawls/ Two Point Campus: I can't wait for Lego Brawls, but don't much care for the others.
Mario Kart DLC: Good content... FOR A REASONABLE PRICE? I'm shocked...
Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Don't care much for this series, but nice regardless.

All in all, a great direct! I'd give it an A-.
