Best: eBay, local game shops, local pawn shops

Amazon is good too, but most sellers don't provide any pictures. I'm not going to buy a game from you if I can't even see what it looks like. It should be a requirement from all sellers to provide at least one picture.
I've gotten lots of cool finds at local pawn shops, like Kirby's Return to Dreamland and Klonoa on Wii for only $5 each, both in great condition. The people who work at pawn shops normally don't do any research on what games they take in. The shop I frequent runs a policy that every "retro" game is only $5 and sometimes if they're having a good day they'll drop it down to $3 or $4.

Worst: GameStop

I think everyone on the planet shares this sentiment.

Here's some lovely stories from my local GameStop. Recently I went into the store to browse. I found a pre-owned copy of The Witcher 3 on PS4 which had lots of extra goodies including the slipcover, map, etc. It was also their only preowned copy. So I take it up to the register and check out, and after the guy rings it up and is taking my card he stashes the slipcover away below the counter and hands it back to me without it. I ask for it back and he says its "for display purposes". For what exactly? A new copy? A different game? There wasn't even a price sticker below the slipcover. Obviously someone traded it in the way it was sitting on the shelf. So frustrating. I almost wanted to say, "never mind, I don't want it anymore."

That same day they also forgot to put something I bought in the bag, which is fairly normal for them to be honest, however as I was walking out of the door he shouts at me to not forget the piece of paper he handed me that shows all upcoming releases, you know, the thing they use to shill pre-orders to every person within a one mile radius. Maybe you shouldn't forget to put something I already paid for in the bag. Really shows where their priorities are. I had to walk back in and get it 15 minutes later.

Just recently I went to pick up my preorder for Crash Team Racing (pretty much the only reason to go to GameStop anymore - their preorder bonuses). The lady behind the counter (she was sitting on the floor for some reason...) decided to give me my preorder bonus by chucking it on the counter. There's absolutely, 100%, NO reason to throw a collectible on the counter. Luckily, it wasn't broken but now the box has some scuffs.

Another time I found a preowned game there which had chunks of a Dorito slathered all over and under the manual and disc. Who knows how old that thing was. Disgusting. They could have at least cleaned it out before putting it on their shelf. They already have to open up the case to take the disc out, they definitely would have seen the mess inside.

I have more stories but I think those sum up the experience pretty well. I can't imagine a game store with worse service than GameStop.

I've purchased a handful of Limited Run games in the past. Their customer service is fairly good and the staff actively take measures against scalpers by only letting people buy a maximum of 1 or 2 copies of a game. Then, after the game sells out they go through and cancel all the botted orders and allow real people to sign up for a waitlist to get their hands on the cancelled orders. I'm not sure how great of a job they do for that though because it's not public knowledge how many bot orders get cancelled AFAIK.

I don't like that they ship games in crappy bubble mailers by default. You have to explicitly order a shipping box for a few extra dollars if you want your product undamaged. My Jak II copy came in the mail damaged (it looked like something was dropped on the case and there was a tear in the artwork), but customer service was kind about it and they mailed me a free replacement box. Nothing else though, only the box and the artwork, so if you wanted your game sealed then it might have been an issue when you had to open up the game and put your manual and disc in the new box. They made me take pictures of the damage first, and then after it was approved they had me take pictures again to make sure they sent out the correct cover variant (good). Fortunately I didn't have to request a shipping box for the replacement copy and they sent one on their own.

I've personally never had a problem with scalpers. They tend to only go for the supreme expensive collector's editions of games instead of the standard copies (obviously). Recently I've heard it's been getting out of hand with the Jak and Daxter collector's editions. I only wanted the regular copies and when Jak 3 went on sale, the standard PS4 copy remained in stock for almost 20 minutes after release, MUCH longer than the Jak and Daxter and Jak II batches. Edit: I just went back and checked, Jak and Daxter started at 5,000 copies of the standard edition, then Jak II and Jak 3 were upped to 7,500 copies for their releases, looks like they were trying to account for the demand.

The shipment times are usually very slow. For example I ordered Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath for PS3 (their first PS3 title) months ago, think February. Still to this day I've not gotten a shipment notice or any word about the game. They did this for Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee on Vita last year too, it was very slow. However it did eventually arrive and I'm happy with the product.

Same goes for all the other products. There's a lot of love put into the games and artwork and they don't seem overwhelmingly cash-grab to me.

Site Feedback / Re: Why is there no third-person shooter option?
« on: May 22, 2019, 08:43:31 am »
I second this, whenever I edit to put in a genre for a third-person shooter, putting "action" feels way too broad most of the time. I've also seen entries using the "shoot-em-up" genre in place of third-person shooter, which doesn't make sense but I can't entirely blame them for picking it if they didn't know any better. There's already an option for first-person shooter, it would only make sense to add third-person shooter as well IMO.

I have this problem. too. The only time the submit new item button appears is when I click on the Currently Playing tab. Only then can I add a new item. Logging in and out has nothing to do with it. I use Safari as my browser.
Same problem here. Only shows up under Currently Playing tab. I'm on Firefox 66.0.5
