Let's Name the Top 100 RPGs, Together
« on: July 30, 2020, 02:18:43 pm »
Some of you may remember some years back we built interactive Top 100 lists for each console where we'd each take a turn naming a game to add to the list.

Well, I'm bored AF. I'm at work with nothing to do, as I have no students still and I'm prepared as I possibly can be. So let's do another list.

Rules:
-Please only name 1 game at a time.
-Please allow others to answer before providing another answer.
-This is no particular order, we're just naming them as we go.

VGCollect's Top 100 RPGs
1. King's Field (U.S.)

2.  Chrono Trigger

What kind of criteria are we using to identify RPGs?  I know we've had some contentiousness about that in the past.

Also, a rule I tend to use for myself for these is that I will only post once in every 10 entries.

Lose and fast, bud.

I don't think we need to get into what constitutes an RPG debates. Western RPGs, JRPGs, action-RPGs, strategy-RPGs, dungeon crawlers, MMORPGs; they're all included here.

I know, everyone is thinking "Zelda". I think most of us here agree that Zelda games (except maybe Zelda II) are action-adventures, not RPGs.

Might as well get it out of the way, since it’s inevitably going to appear somewhere on the list and IMO it’s the greatest RPG ever...

5. Final Fantasy VI

6. Final Fantasy VIII

Often very divisive, I've always really adored it! Especially the Art Direction & Design - Odin being my favourite variation of any Summon in an FF game here.

9. Crystalis (NES version)

One of the best games on the NES, period. Done in the original Legend of Zelda style, but with added RPG-elements, better graphics, more enemy variety and location variety, and more NPCs and towns to interact in. I've wanted a sequel to this so badly, for so long. But shortly after this is when SNK began to focus on arcade games a lot more, especially fighting games.

I'm just not the biggest Final Fantasy fan, myself. I like RPGs and have played some of them to try to get into them, but they just don't grab me. I've finished 1, 2, 9, and Mystic Quest. And I've tried 4, 6, and 7.
