FPS, RPG, SIM ... where are you "at home"?
« on: December 01, 2024, 06:20:54 am »
Greetings,

during my life as a gamer, I met countless other gamers no matter if retro- or modern gaming... but I don't really recall meeting any all-genre type of gamers  :o ...

Name the 2 genres you turned out to prefer the most!

I'd be forced to start with RPGs in general, then First Person Shooters, though I quitted online multiplayer madness about CoD BO2  :P

How about y'all people?

Action/RPG is secondary.
 - Mass Effect
 - Witcher

...and a few more.

Only 2 Genres... brutal but lets see if I can narrow it down to only two...

First I would say 2D platformers is my favorite. Pretty much what grew up with and I still actively enjoy, Marios, Sonics, Metroids, Ninja Gaiden and newer titles are really good like The Messenger, Cyber Shadow and Spelunky. That is my bread and butter.

The Second Genre I would say would be Turned Based Strategy. Again I grew up playing Master of Monsters and Shining force into the early ours of the mornings with my friends when I was in middle school. Some of my favorite newer titles like Wastelands 2 and 3, The X-com games I love. Just finished Marvel Midnight Suns which was quiet excellent.

My two favorite genres are Action/Adventure games (ie. Zelda, Shenmue) and Fighting games. At one time RPGs would have been one of my favorites, but for one reason or another I have a hard time staying engaged with most RPGs now and often end up abandoning the game before I finish, or even get halfway.

Fighting games and Shoot'em ups /shmups preferably 2D but occasionally 3D. Honorable mention Platformers, and Run'n guns.

I feel confident that a majority of games I gravitate toward and play are within the wide genre of Adventure. But I'm finding it difficult to identify what a second choice would be. I'd say it's a close toss-up between Puzzle or RPG, though they're both a distant second to Adventure.

Hard to say just two, but I'd say platformers and RPGs, specifically just turn based ones. The Dragon Quest and Mega Man franchises are my "at home" games.

If I had to narrow it down, I'd say Action/Adventures games (Zelda, Soulslike stuff) and Shooters (Battlefield).  They are my usual go to experiences with probably Platformer being close third.

Only 2 Genres... brutal

Yeah, I know it's kinda brutal to narrow it down to just two genres, but that's exactly what I wanted to know - and your replies show me that we got experts on all kind of genres, which I think is cool!  8)
I'm excited what fav genres may follow - maybe we can accumulate a full deck of all general genres?  :P

I was suprised to read shoot-'em-ups so early, tbo  :P

FPS/Imsim is what I spend the most of my time on. Outside of that, perhaps ARPG.

As a kid I played whatever I could get my hands on that appealed to me. Which mainly consisted of platformers and horror games with an occasional RPG. Teenage me got hooked into first/third person shooters and fighting games. I love the fast game play you'd typically see in both with the execution/mentality required to play either genre competently. I put in way too much time trying to get that competitive edge. In adulthood that competitiveness is still there. I still play shooters and fighting games, just infrequently. Shrinking free time really puts your priorities into perspective.

As this moment my "at home" genres would have to be shoot'em ups and platformers. Shoot'em ups share subtle parallels with fighting games and I've enjoyed learning them. While a good platformer is easy to sink time into at your own pace. Horror and RPGs are on the periphery if the mood strikes.

Platformers are my bread and butter. It’s like momma’s biscuits and gravy. I don’t get more at home than a Mario game. I prefer 2D, because I’m old;  it I’m not too shabby at all 3D platformer.

Second is probably arcade-style Beat ‘em Ups. TMNT Arcade, Streets of Rage, Alien vs Predator, The Simpsons; you get the picture. They have so much replayability. Even newer ones like Streets of Rage 4 and TMNT: Shredders Revenge are great.

This was hard. Sports games and Wrestling games are really fun too. I’m sure my answer to this would change like the wind.

Exploration based action / adventure games.  This covers Metroidvanias and Souls-likes.  If that only counts as one genre then my #2 would be platformers.
