Author Topic: Older consoles or handhelds that you regret sleeping on when they were modern  (Read 828 times)

What consoles or handhelds did you overlook when they are considered modern that you now deeply regret?

I have two, well...I guess 1 1/2 depending on how you look it.

PS1: I only played the PS1 a handful of times when it was considered Sony's current console, however most of my experiences as a gamer in the mid to late 90s were either on the N64 or Saturn. I actually bought a PS1 console the same day the PS2 console came out, thinking it would be months before I'd be able to grab Sony's then newest console. However, I'd actually get a PS2 for Christmas just a few months later, but anyhow. I did get into the PS1 towards the very tail end of its life, and since then I've certainly made up for lost time by playing a ton of PS1 games over the years. Still, I really wish one of my friends at least would have had a PS1 for me to play more. It's just such a cool console and one I wish I'd have been able to make more memories with back in the late 90s.

GBA: What's sad is I actually did have a GBA in the early 2000s. I actually got a GBA for Christmas the same year they came out, along with Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 (which wasn't that great tbh). The only games I remember really getting into on my GBA were Advance Wars and later on Pokemon Ruby. Especially over the last couple years, I've developed a newfound appreciation for the GBA, one that has blossomed over time into full blown love. So, so many excellent games were released on it, and I find its graphics and sound to be beyond charming and nostalgic. I just wish I'd spent more time with the GBA back in the 2000s when I owned my original one, but I guess it's better to appreciate something eventually rather than never.

PSP and Vita I guess? It wasn't so much that I slept on them and more that I was a broke teenager lol Well, for the PSP anyways. I was in Uni and working part-time when the Vita was still "modern" but I just thought that it had no games lol

I haven't started to collect Vita yet as I am still collecting / playing PSP, but I do plan on getting to it eventually.

I hope I come around to the PSP at some point. Funny enough, I recently just sold my Vita and the 10 or so games I had for it. I got a wild hair and bought one from a game store back in like 2014 or so. I played it a handful of times around the time I got it and it's literally been untouched ever since. I decided it wasn't going to get played anytime soon so I sold it. I still have a PSP and a healthy collection for it, however it's just never sparked much joy for me despite playing some pretty good games on it.

The only one I can think of is the PS Vita, from times I was active in video games. I do kinda wish I'd picked up one of those mini wii's that came out with no internet capabilities, but technically I can play those games on my wii-u if I really wanted to.

The PlayStation Vita is pretty great. I still have mine, although it's been a while since I've played anything on it. It's a haven for fans of dungeon crawlers.

Re: the topic at hand, I'd say the Sega Saturn. I love my library of games I have for it now, but looking back at it there are a few others I would have likely enjoyed back in its day. I stan most things 2D and the Saturn is capable of showing those at their best.

don't have much regret on sleeping on the psp as one of the few systems I didn't do much with at the time. Even moreso for ps vita

otherwise didn't really miss consoles when they where modern at the time either played at friends or owned em. from xbox to nintendo

ye know what now that I think about considering dreamcast released around the time of the cube and ps2. do regret missing that one, but since it discontinued that quickly and wasn't that popular it was probably a very ez system to miss at the time.

The Dreamcast really was a flash in the pan and I'm forever grateful I was there to experience it. I was hyped out of my mind leading up to its release and then pretty much for the entire duration of its life. My brother got one in November of 1999 for his birthday and I played it easily 10x more than he did. I regularly bought and rented games for it throughout 2000 and 2001. In fact, I didn't even realize the DC had been discontinued until the later part of 2001. With games like Sonic Adventure 2 getting released posthumously, it was easy to be oblivious to the fact that Sega had already pulled the plug on it. I definitely wish it had been able to hold on for longer, but for what its worth, it was am amazing couple of years that I remember extremely fondly.

Heard it was kinda hyped at the time indeed, had no friends who had the console sadly nor did I see any of them games in stores. Some stories I've heard of it within my country is that all the big stores had some really heavy clearance bin discount of dreamcast consoles and games so it was probably gone pretty fast from most notable stores in the country when all that was sold.

Years later allot of the people I met who got rid of their sets where pretty uique characters and where often very passionate about the console. in the few times they didn't it was usually cause the mom got rid of their son's game stash and the og player was already long gone.

Probably the Dreamcast, I know I played it somewhere, though I can't 100% remember where (Can't remember if I rented the console or not, it's been so long, loved being able to do that back in the day), but it had cool games, even though it didn't last long, though I guess I don't regret it too much because it was so short lived and the PS2 released and that was sorta the only thing that mattered until I got an Xbox to play Halo with my buddies.

I haven't dug that deeply into the PSP yet, but what I have played so far has been great. Monster Hunter is one of my favorite series so playing its early entries has been fun (if not a little annoying, cause the series has made a lot of improvements over the years lol). And it has a bunch of cool games you just don't see much of today outside of the indie scene like Patapon.

Vita I really don't know much about. There are a few standout games I really want to try like Gravity Rush, but other than that I know nothing about the system. Makes it kind of exciting to start collecting though as I have no expectations as to what I'll find lol

None, really. I was heavy into gaming during the 90's and 00's. I have a couple regrets regarding systems though.

1. I regret getting rid of my PS3 because there are a ton of games that I'd love to replay that haven't been ported to the modern Playstation platform. Motorstorm, Infamous, Killzone 2, Army of Two, Riddick... I could go on. I may look into buying another PS3 late this year or next.

2. I regret jumping on board with the PSV at launch. The one game it had that was exclusive to it and the only reason I keep it is Uncharted: Golden Abyss. Had they added that to the PS4's Uncharted Collection, I'd have sold my PSV. The system never got the support it deserved from western AAA devs during a time when those devs were still good. The one good thing that came from PSV, IMO, is the lesson to not jump onto Sony's side-projects until they're proven. That saved me half the cost of PSVR (my wife gifted it to me when it was on sale a couple years after release) and the full cost of PSVR2 (never bought it).

I do wish I had grown up with SEGA consoles (specifically Genesis, Saturn, and Game Gear) instead of the SNES and N64. I would've found more IPs I was interested in that way instead of only playing Pokemon and Mario until 2002. I also wish I'd asked for a Dreamcast on release so I could've been part of that experience instead of waiting until production was cancelled. But most of all, I wish I could've had a Neo Geo AES when I was a kid. There's no way my parents would've bought a $1200 console for a 5-year-old, but damn, those visuals from a home console would've been mindblowing in the early '90s. It released in 1990 and was so much more powerful than its competitors that it was still getting new games until 2005. Fifteen years... that thing hung in there.

This isn't necessarily anything new, but it's still funny seeing people mention Sega so much when it comes to consoles they wish they'd been able to play more back in the 90s. For whatever reason, Sega was far more a part of my upbringing than Nintendo. Most of my friends had Sega consoles, I had a bunch of Sega consoles, and in general we all discussed Sega games mostly. I did have friends with NES and SNES, and I ended up getting an N64 in 1996, but I'd say that was still a minority of my gaming experience back then. With how dominant Sega was in my personal life back in the 90s you'd like I grew up in Europe of South America lol.

Sega was far more a part of my upbringing than Nintendo.

Same. I started off with an NES, but quickly moved to Game Gear and then Genesis until the PS1 released. I skipped Saturn and by the time Dreamcast released, I was old enough to buy my own systems and did just that, owning every system from that gen, though the Xbox (OG) was only for about a month.

I was pretty split on Nintendo and Sega as a kid, I had an NES, then got a Genesis at some point, pretty sure it wasn't new, much like the NES, and then it was Nintendo 64, and so on. Didn't have an SNES, but my buddy had one I played off and on, that was a system I rented from my video store once in awhile when I could.  Loved coming home with a console in a big black protector case lol

After that I played a Sega Saturn at my other buddies house, I funnily enough, thought it was a Sega CD all these years, but just checked that it was a Saturn, because I specifically remember playing Battle Arena Toshinden on it, which isn't on Sega CD lol

Did remember playing a Dreamcast for a short bit of time at someone else's house, pretty sure it was Street Fighter Alpha 3.  It's interesting to think of a lot of systems I played, but never owned, like I love PS1, but never owned one back then, I would play games down at my local card store like Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, Twisted Metal 2, Tekken 3 at that store.  Buddy had a PS1 and I played FF7 with him on it.
