@Soera, the greatest and most fun game to play on the Sega Master System goes to??????? ??? ??? ??? ???

Some of my choices of SMS games to play is : Phantasy star, Rocky, Space harrier, Alex Kidd in miracle world, Wonder boy III, Alien syndrome, Astro warrior, R-type, Basketball nightmare, Ys, Golvellius, Golden axe warrior, Kenseiden, Rastan, Time soldiers, Miracle warriors, Quartet, RC Grand prix, Ultima IV, Zillion.

But not ALF.  Definitely not ALF.

After reading this, I did decide to go give a few games a shot. You were not wrong about ALF. It is totally a worthless title. I cant believe stuff like this actually got published. ALF touches a cat tail (if you know anything about ALF himself, he eats cats) and dies. There also seems to be no purpose to this game so far. I may have to give it a serious go without my kids around to see if I can get more into it.

I also put in a few other games.
Strider - looks kind of like the NES version but definitely slower play. Seems very lag filled.
Forgotten worlds - Neat version of the arcade game. Since it was limited to only 2 buttons, you actually dont fire your weapon. Its automatic. Each button rotates one way or the other. Game needs a continue option (think I heard there was a cheat that allowed this)
Zillion II - Could be a fun title. Very quick response reliable.

Didnt get much else done with my kids around but Im going to try to get some play time on every North American released SMS game (missing 11 but will get them all soon) and Im going to end up doing a thread covering them.

I have never played a single master system game. I don't think I've ever even seen a master system in person.

Definitely an underrated system (And one of the coolest looking systems ever). Not a bad console to collect for at the moment either. With all the NES nuts out there, SMS is overlooked and almost all the games are decently priced and CIBs are obtainable for sure.

I want to preface what I'm about to say by first saying that I have a tremendous respect for older generation consoles and even going back to the atari/pong console days I understand their place in gaming history and that they paved the way for future generations... that being said, as someone who never grew up with an 8 bit console (we would occasionally rent an NES back when blockbuster rented out systems, but that was when I was very little and hardly remember it at all) I'm not a huge 8 bit generation fan, I still to this day don't have an NES or any NES games... I have a few on virtual console but that's about it. I think most of the games I would get that I do like (castlevania, mega man, super mario bros etc...) I already have either on virtual console or in anthology collections (and since I grew up with Mario All-Stars it's really hard for me to go back and play the originals on NES).

So yeah, I think one day I'll probably get an NES and maybe a Master System too... But I'm gonna wait until I don't have a billion games on my wishlists for the systems I love... and also maybe a tad bit more spending cash :D

I *did* grow up on the Atari 2600 and then NES, and I'm still not a huge fan.  :P  I was back then, but I have kind of a "been there, done that, things have moved on" point of view.  There are some 16 bit games I can still go back & play (Super Metroid is probably in my top-10 of all time list).  I can go back to the PSOne era for JRPGs and a few platformers, but the PS2 is my favorite system and I feel like its games hold up the best for me.  Which is why I focus on it for collecting.  That said, I do have some NES games that I won't get rid of - 2 of the 3 Castlevanias (still need the original), Metroid, Zelda - and there are some more I'd pick up & keep if I came across them.  But that's more of a "I really enjoyed these games as a kid and want to own them now" thing that really wanting to go back and PLAY them again.  ;)

desire to be very grown up.” ― C.S. Lewis

16 bit era I'm much more into... Most of the game I have on SNES are games that I will still go back to and play often. SNES and PS2 were the 2 consoles I had growing up. Every other console I have is something I've gotten since I've been an adult and had a job to buy them for myself. PS2 is the only console I ever had that my parents got for me (we got our SNES from a friend when the N64 came out and they didn't want the SNES anymore). So it's no wonder that my 2 biggest collections now are on PS2 and SNES.

and for me on SNES DKC1 and 2 are my games I always go back to. DKC2 is probably top 5 all time for me. both of them probably crack my top 10 list too.

@Bwigdahl I just wanted to say your forum phrase "I'm a person" just cracked me up.  lol.  It was good for me to laugh.  I know that sounds weird but maybe the way I read it is different from your intentions but it was good for me to get that laugh in.  Thanks for the phrase!   :D

Depends on your time frame. If you have unlimited time, Id go with Phantasy star. If you have a full day, Rastan is fulfilling. If its just a couple of hours, Basketball nightmare should work. If you just have an hour, go with Rocky.

Thanks Soera.  What do you think or where do you put Golvellious?  Maybe I am overhyping it, but Golvellious seemed so much more fun to me than PHantasy Star.  If I did not get lost every 5 minutes in a dungeon and have to go to Youtube for a strategy on how to make it out the dungeon, maybe i would put Phantasy STar on a pedestal.  But Golvellious had me locked in from the start and I wish the second one was able to get produced  :(

I'm glad it made you laugh... I don't really know what I meant when I put it in for whatever reason it just popped in my head. So however you read it that made you laugh is as good an interpretation as anything I guess  :D

You dont have to apologize/feel bad for not being an 8 bit fan. Some people only play 8 bit and dont play current gen. I prefer all gens in some form or other. I grew up with a Master system and games like Phantasy Star, Miracle warriors, Ultima IV, Ys, Golvellius, and Golden axe warrior are the games that I learned what genre I enjoy.

Golvellius is an awesome game. I dont think its as great a Master system title as Phantasy Star. Its more of a Zelda-ish style game than a deep drawn out RPG. Its definitely on my replay list.

Oh don't get me wrong, I don't really feel bad or anything. But if I'm going to say anything negative about such a loved era I don't want to start a flame war so instead of just saying something like "I HATE THE 8 BIT ERA" which IS how I feel sometimes, I like to throw disclaimers on there so my message isn't misunderstood. I've been on forums long enough to know how easily things can get out of hand and like I said, I have no intentions of flame baiting.

Edit: not that this place seems to have people who flame each other, it's just a mechanism i've developed over years of posting on forums.
