Look at all that backtracking.

http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/update

TL;DR
Games are no longer region locked, untradable, or unplayable on any consoles that aren't your own. Digital stuff still is, but that's digital stuff so it's not important.

Now they just need to remove the Kinect requirement (IE make a bundle without it) and reduce the price to actual reasonable levels....

They still insulted all of the gaming fanbase, but at least they're doing something mildly good.

My guess is that their preorders were REALLY low. Looking at Amazons top sellers the XBox one is now in first place. However, Sony has 5 different launch packages of PS4 in the top 10. My guess (which I'm sure I share with a lot of people) is that XBox is going to be playing catch up this generation.

There are not many people I really dislike without having met. But Don Mattrick is one of those people.

This is good news though. Hopefully, it will squash some of these practices due to how big of a failure this was. Gaming will still change. But this will be when physical media completely goes away.

I wonder if the games still have to be installed to the hard drive. I'd assume so, and you just have to pop in the disc if not online... ?

I want to see how everything is implemented. But honestly, I might be onboard. Forza is one of the franchises I really like. And, I'll be honest, I really like Halo. Plus, I do like the set top features. I might be the only one. But I like turning on NHL game center, youtube, or netflix on XBox while surfing on my laptop.

Is the damage done?  I don't know.  Gamers are a fickle bunch. They may promise a boycott, but the launch isn't until fall. We'll have to wait and see. I'm glad Microsoft heard our voice (read: lack of preorders), but it may be too little too late.

I find their backtracking to be a smart move ... but I definitely agree with the majority here : the damage is done. The snobbish attitude that they showed earlier with stuff like if you cant connect every day, buy a 360 really put a ton of people off. And whose to say that they wont go back to their bullshit once people get the system in their houses.

I'm still going to go with the PS4 for this gen, will I get an Xbone down the road...Maybe if they release one with a bigger hard drive cause let's face it 500gb is not going to be enough with mandatory install. Also NO KINECT PLEASE.

while writing this, a video popped up on my youtube feed and he's got a good point.

I find their backtracking to be a smart move .

You know... I'm not sure I agree with that :P

They're just doing the obvious move. The smart move would have been to not reveal these policies in the first place, meaning Sony would have revealed something similar first and gotten all the flak, instead of letting them just get all the gamers' respect like that :P

here is the backtracking statement from microsoft

"Last week at E3, the excitement, creativity and future of our industry was on display for a global audience. For us, the future comes in the form of Xbox One, a system designed to be the best place to play games this year and for many years to come. As is our heritage with Xbox, we designed a system that could take full advantage of advances in technology in order to deliver a breakthrough in game play and entertainment. We imagined a new set of benefits such as easier roaming, family sharing, and new ways to try and buy games. We believe in the benefits of a connected, digital future.Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One.You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world. So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360. Here is what that means:An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console — there will be no regional restrictions. These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray. We appreciate your passion, support and willingness to challenge the assumptions of digital licensing and connectivity. While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content. We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds.Thank you again for your candid feedback. Our team remains committed to listening, taking feedback and delivering a great product for you later this year."

still not buying one, they have lost my trust.

If they'd have paid attention and done this before E3, it would have been a smart move. If it had come out the E3 press conference, Sony's big announcement would have lost a lot of steam.

This is a good day for gamers.
hopefully these huge companies now see that WE are the customer.
i will still buy both a ps4 and a wiiu before i look at the xboxone but at least now i will look at getting this in the future.

when i was listening to the forza 5 reveal and the guy was saying that you have to be online for the AI i was confused. WHY do you not have standard AI and then if you go online it updates. it made no sense saying that was the reason you had to be online.
