It doesn't really feel like it but this is happening today at 2:00pm PT / 5:00pm ET.

I hope there's some good stuff!

I hope there is some good stuff shown off. I feel like most of those presentation/showcase things are very underwhelming, but they do surprise me from time to time. I saw a supposed leak of this presentation and I'm hoping it's true, although the lineup was so stacked that I highly doubt it was legit. We'll see it a few hours.

I'm mildly excited as I feel like this is sorta one of those "turning point" situations they need as they've had a lot of problems with the company in regards to their years long live service debacle (That's still technically ongoing), the issues with Bungie, I just saw an article that apparently their single player games haven't been selling as well as they use to on the PS5 and that it doesn't feel like they have a big and broad selection of games.  We got some big games coming, but they are all very realistic, cinematic level games and they don't have exciting like mid-tier stuff that is good gap fillers like Nintendo tends to have.  Astro Bot was a breath of fresh air and we are about to get a few more like that new Kena looks good, the Marvel Arcsys game looks fun, but more things like that would be smart I feel than banking on these big titles that then need to sell real big.

I'm always hoping for the best in these situations, I don't want to see game companies failing, firing people, digging into specific types of games because others are viewed as too risky, I just want a good reason to start up my PS5, which I haven't really done since Death Stranding 2 last year...close to a year.  I think I dabbled in something else since then, but I can't remember.  I was gonna check out Ghost of Yotei probably this summer and then otherwise, I'm just waiting on Wolverine at this point.  Not even particularly excited for Intergalatic, not that I think it'll be bad, it's Naughty Dog, it'll be decent, I just don't even know what sorta game it'll be yet.

I'll put my first impressions on everything from the show below this...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wolverine at the start is a strong sign I think.  This is the bloodiest game I've seen in a while that wasn't trying to be super cartoonish about it lol A streamer I was watching explained it well that it's very much that it's got Uncharted vibes, just without a gun, and Nathan can take .50 caliber bullet to the chest and regenerate lol Looks great, I'm glad it's a very different style of game compared to Spider-Man.

Marvel Tokon with the villain team reveal, announcing Magneto, Carnage, and Green Goblin. Pretty cool lineup.

Rayman Legends Remake got leaked the other day, I think there was a rumored remaster of an older Rayman too, but maybe that was just a part of this.  Visually it looks really good.  October 1st.

Dave the Diver spinoff game about Bancho the Chef about his backstory, it looks fun.

3 player co-op action game.  Very stylish, I liked how it looked as it's colorful and vibrant, but not super anime.  Kemuri.  Lead on it is Ikumi Nakamura the "It's spooky" gal from like Ghostwire Tokyo and did work on like Evil within and other games.  2027 release.

Tomb Raider, Legacy of Atlantis, that I believe it was announced before? Looks really cool, seems like it has more of the old school Tomb Raider style, just all done with a much more stylish movement and action going on.

The Lost Wild, survival horror dinosaur game, looks so good.  I can't wait for this.  Capcom isn't giving Dino Crisis and it has no ties to Jurassic Park/World, this is great lol

Phantom Blade Zero, Late Summer 2026.

Dune Awakening coming to PS5.

Dynasty Warriors 3 Remastered coming to PS5.  October 1st.

No Rest of the Wicked hitting 1.0 release in October, iso action rpg from the Ori studio.

Onimusha Way of the Sword, September.  Demo out now.

Silent Hill: Townfall, September 24th, the first person one, it looks really good.

Ace Combat 8.  October 2nd.  I never got into this series, but this looked cool.  Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War as a pre-order...A remake of an older game or something I guess?

Stuntman Hollywood.  Lots of famous cars in it like Knight Rider and the Back to the Future Delorean.

Ill, this was announced before, really good looking survival horror.  Has a very goofy feeling dub that feels very disconnected from the realistic horror lol 2027

The new Control does look good, though I'm still not 100% sure on it as it's a very different game from what I was expecting...September 24th.

Marathon: Season 2.  Out now. Open trial available.

Until Dawn 2, set on an island.  2027.

New God of War game.  Set alongside the games, Faye goes off to fight in a spirit world perhaps.  Gameplay is more fast paced leading to more floaty combos.  They showed off the entire opening game.  They are mixing pantheons more now with seemingly Japanese (Chinese?) and Egyptian deity's/beings. "Afterlife of the Gods", so could be all godly pantheons.  I was initially less interested in this game as I felt less interested in more God of War, but this being more pantheons has me more interested and Faye's gameplay is completely different vibe from Kratos, very flashy and quick and floaty, almost like...kinda like Chinese styled action games.  Gonna be honest, I started out very not wanting a new God of War game, to being very into this new God of War game lol

God of War: Laufey.  No date at all, probably 2028.

Marvel's Wolverine sure looks good!
Rayman Legends Retold sure looks nice.
Dave the Diver prequel doesn't look too compelling.
Kemuri looks a lot like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Lara look fine. It didn't seem the most exciting though.
The Lost Wild seems like a horrible name for a game, just sounds extremely generic. Dinosaurs sure are popular.
Who is buying all these musou games?
Is this Ace Combat segment gonna end?
Welcome back Stuntman franchise.
Control Resonant will probably be one of the best games this year.
Gitaroo Man port this month, Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy port next month.
Calling it Until Dawn 2 is bold. I'm interested enough.
More God of War.

No Fairgame$, 4:LOOP, Horizon Hunters Gathering, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet or Kena: Scars of Kosmora. Imagine this generation if Sony didn't finally acquire Insomniac. Four games and a remaster, Naughty Dog has two/three remasters and an unnecessary remake.

This God of War game is like Forspoken 2. They can't be serious.

Overall a very decent show with good games shown off and getting dates, though for selling "Sony", I'm not sure if this did enough as for big system pushers, the best was Wolverine and God of War, and God of War isn't releasing for a long while.  Was surprised they didn't show off the Horizon game, but that and a couple others could be shown off at Summer Games Fest coming up.

*EDIT*
Found out the two gods in the God of War game is a Tibetan Buddhist god of war named Begtse and the Sekhet, who initially I thought could be Aztec with their design is Egyptian.  It has me curious how many other pantheons could show up and if we'll see gods from past games show up at all.

Not much interested me. Maybe Ace Combat 8 as I don't have any 3D jet fighter games, might just get 7 instead. Clutch looks good, but it's a racing game, so it's 90% going to be an always-online live service game. Loved Until Dawn, but can't really get behind a "sequel" that has nothing to do with the original or wendigos in general.

Sony really thought it was a good idea to start an hour-long presentation with twelve minutes featuring Marvel. Then, it ended with 20 minutes of God of War. I'm glad I never watch these events live.

Anyway, here my brief thoughts on some of the games highlighted:

God of War Laufey
As someone who's really never engaged with the God of War franchise: I ask: does this game really need to exist? Although I suppose we won't know until the game actually releases. I had watched some gameplay across the campaign for the previous two titles, and it never seemed that important to learn more about the title-character Laufey.

Ill
Ill continues to look like a promising action-focused horror game. How it's presented with its dialogue and delivery seems a bit at odds with the gameplay, though.

The Lost Wild
I'm not interested in dinosaurs, but this seems okay. It looks like a competent horror dinosaur game that's original.

Rayman Legends Retold
Rayman's propeller hair looks beyond silly.

Silent Hill: Townfall
The inclusion of stealth mechanics has already been revealed in a previous trailer, but after watching this latest trailer, I'm curious how such a change will impact the game within the context of the series. Also, part of the new story elements revealed remind me of Silent Hill 2.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis
Lara Croft looks very generic.

Until Dawn 2
There's no reason why this game needed to be advertised as a sequel, but it's obviously being done to promote the possibility of a franchise as this is just the latest "installment." Nevertheless, I like how this title is in direct contrast to the original game as far as setting.

She's basically the driving force of the first games narrative and is someone who gave Kratos his axe and before the first game, had fought both Thor and Kratos to a standstill.  She has some deep lore explored in the games and is what leads to the character growth of both Kratos and Atreus without directly being in either game.  That it's exploring a character we got to know indirectly from both games and it involves bringing in other pantheons, and will delve into a mystery involving Atreus that I think was only teased in Ragnarok, I think that justifies the game more than enough.  I say that as someone who wasn't interested a ton in a new GoW game before this, so the preview did alot to win me over lol

Yeah, Faye is the reason the new games happen at all.  I'm stoked to play this.

I'd give the State of Play a 6/10 overall. Okay, but not amazing.

  • Wolverine. Looked like good fun. Pretty gory and cinematic. Hopefully the combat has some depth to it and it isn't all QTE and the same combo's / animations on repeat the whole game. It's a game I'll play eventually, but probably not on launch. I'll pick it up when it hits like 50% off.
  • Marvel Tokon. Excited for this one but it's a game that has been known for a while so it wasn't like a surprise or anything. Basically a new trailer for a game I was already interested in.
  • Rayman Legends Retold. A remake of a great game is cool, but kinda unnecessary in this case. The game already looked great. The new visuals do look amazing but I would have liked a new game instead tbh. I'll play it when it hits a deep discount (like less than $20) or it hits PSPlus or something.
  • Kemuri. Probably my favorite announcement. Looked pretty cool and stylish. Need to see more raw gameplay to make any judgements but I'll be keeping my eye on it for sure.
  • Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. Like Tokon this is a game that I am looking forward to but was already announced, so this trailer did very little to make me "more excited" for PlayStation or something. If it is anywhere near the quality of the recent games I'll be playing this one out for sure. Maybe not a Day 1 though, it will depend on what I am playing at the time I guess.
  • The Lost Wild. Not a horror fan, but it does look interesting. Depending on how it reviews I might check it out. But it's a low %. It would have to be really good to get me to play it lol
  • Phantom Blade 0. Another game that was a known entity before the showcase. You can kinda see where my problem lies with this SoP. Sure its a cool game I'll probably check out but I was already interested in it before this showcase. Nothing new is really being shown to increase my excitement for PlayStation.
  • No Rest for the Wicked. Looking forward to the 1.0 release. I usually avoid early access because I want my first time playing to be the full experience. Again though, not a new title.
  • Onimusha: Way of the Sword. I've never played an Onimusha game, so I have no idea what they are like or how good they were. But I've been meaning to check them out since this game was revealed two years ago. I'll try to get to them before September to see if this is a game I should play day 1 or not.
  • Silent Hill: Townfall. This is the kind of horror game I might suffer through lol Looks super cool and atmospheric. I hope it delivers.
  • Control: Resonant. Cool game I am looking forward to but I've seen enough of it already. It's one of those games that keeps showing up in these shows. They don't need to show me anymore tbh, I'm already interested.
  • God of War Laufey. Wasn't a fan of the reboot, and haven't played its sequel yet. It repeated enemies so much that it got pretty repetitive about half way through. They even reused the same Troll boss fight over and over. It was cool fighting the troll the first time. I didn't need to fight it 8 more times with slight changes like "now he shoots fire" or whatever. Also, the exploration felt tacked on and completely unnecessary. It just slowed the pacing down when all I wanted to really do was push on and continue the story. But you can't really ignore it cause you get a lot of important powerups and items from exploring. So with that said, my hopes for this game are kinda low.

So yeah overall it was a show that had very little new announcements to make me excited. It was just going over a bunch of games I already knew and was interested in. Kemuri was the only game shown that I could add to my wishilist of upcoming games.
