Where did New Nintendo 3DS go?
« on: July 20, 2026, 05:41:11 pm »
This site used to pride itself on making entries that matched what's on the box - to make it easier for collectors. So why is it that someone went ahead and renamed all the New Nintendo 3DS just Nintendo 3DS? Is this site trying to push the agenda that there's no difference between the systems? It's just pure obfuscation. What's next? De-Pocket the GameBoy?  I would love someone to explain the rationale behind that move.

That does seem strange. Why do Nintendo DSi physical games have their own category but New Nintendo 3DS games don't?

Presumably, names were changed to abide to our site's required ManufacturerName HardwareName formatting. Alternatively, entries could be formatted as Nintendo New 3DS. Which of the two naming conventions is most correct for our site's purposes, though, I don't know.

If we were to maintain the current Nintendo 3DS names for New 3DS items, then it may be ideal to supply New Nintendo 3DS to the Alt-Name field.

Why do Nintendo DSi physical games have their own category but New Nintendo 3DS games don't?

Long ago, the thought that a minimum number of total entries within a category was necessary to be met before a category would be created was practiced. I can guess as to why that rule may have been in place then, but it's obviously been changed in recent years. I'm not sure how long the DSi categories have existed (I could not find any updates for the platform in either of the Category/Platform Requests topics), but it's more than likely that New 3DS Games categories have not been created simply because nobody has requested them and that the platform comprises a small subset of items that's easy to overlook.

I did also come across this comment that showcases a lack of urgency for the creation of dedicated New 3DS Games categories.

In the grand scheme of things I doubt there will be that many games released for the *New* sub-model. We currently don't even have a category for New 3DS retail games.
For now just shove 'em in the standard 3DS eShop. If you want, make notes in the description stating that they're New 3DS only. We can always switch them over when/if the category is made.

New Nintendo 3DS games don't get a separate category in the same way PSOne branded games don't.
DSi has games not compatible with older DS consoles.

New Nintendo 3DS games are only compatible with New Nintendo 3DS system models. From this eBay listing, notice the front cover "Only for New Nintendo 3DS" text and the back cover "Not compatible with Nintendo 3DS and 2DS systems" text.

it's true new 3ds games don't work on older 3ds consoles

although I've heard some do but generally speaking not

and dsi has an even smaller list of games I think we should combine that with the regular ds library if you'd ask me. it looks stupid at just 5 orso titles. or neo geo pocket monochrome games

I can see some merit in combining it all. general consensus will see new 3ds as 3ds games anyway

that being said is this really new I can't recall for at least europe there being a new 3ds section. I got a few titles and they where on the reg 3ds section anyway

I'd argue it makes it far more annoying for collectors if you get too many categories. shit like Foto Showdown getting it's own subsection is stupid. just fill in some sub category or discription that it's only compatible on dsi tops.
Besides how is it hard for collectors when everything is in alphabetical order and or ez to find in the search bar.

still in all honesty just checked the new 3ds library again, a whopping 2 physical titles fire emblem warriors and xenoblade. I don't see how seperating it in it's own subgenre is a good idea or would make it easier for collectors just gives more fluff to make stuff less clear.

I'm also all for combining neo geo pocket monochrome and dsi with ds cause it's just dumb. same consoles at the end of the day with tiny libraries. and heck with neo geo pocket it's just compatible with the color console anyway

like who the hell made the neo geo pocket subgenre with a whopping 1 title makes it super annoying. more genre's are not a buff for every collector in the slightest.

https://vgcollect.com/browse/neogeopocketeu

Neo geo pocket genre meme worthy a whopping single title that works on the color console aswell anyway. if we can abolish the neo geo pocket monochrome section I'm all for it if new 3ds ain't seperate anyway. this is even worse

This is a topic about the database entry naming conventions for specific Nintendo 3DS consoles. If there's anything to be said regarding the possibility for dedicated New 3DS categories, post them here in response to my request for them to be added. Or, just wait until a response from an Admin is returned to me.

there is a difference between a console with hundreds of games + actually upgrading it's games and categories that have single digit to lone entries in which there are zero buffs to the games it's all just fluff at that point. also there is a far smaller difference in terms of the ds1 new 3ds vs the gameboy color vs classic gameboy. way bigger diff especially with the new 3ds. it's basicly just a souped up version and the dsi just had allot of extra's that nobody used.

I'm just agreeing with what the site already does for new 3ds and we having worse culprits that should be merged aswell. not big into 3ds so it ain't my idea why new 3ds entries are merged.

you either seperate or merge all I'd say but it does look silly to have sub sections with 1 to 5 games.

regardless just my opinion on the matter, I do think sub categories for these small libraries which are just small alterations on the console they are coming from are not a good idea to make stuff easier. they are just a small part of the original library for my taste.

exceptions to small libraries should be reserved for consoles that are actually really different

think about the N64 dd or the jaguar CD this is not just a souped up version of the very same console. it's very different. a new 3ds is just a 3ds with more power. but it's pretty much the same console at the end of the day it just happens that some games need to have that extra power for it to work. and the dsi is literally just a ds. but it gets some extra features compared to what ds had outside of the games. It's basicly just a ds + camera it's still a ds at the very end of the day + features that 99.999% of people did not give a flying fuck about and some games use them dsi features ain't much to it although it's really just 1 game cause the others ain't really games. wow a ds with a camera, we got an entirely different console guys  ::)

a gameboy color is a massive buff introducing color to games at the very end of the day the difference is night and day compared to consoles that look almost identical to their predecessors which I'll repeat it again non notable features that barely effected anything. in terms of new 3ds you can call it a pro model tops and your 2 exclusive games are massively gimped console ports. and a dsi is just a ds console with no power upgrades. just happens to have a camera.

Consoles would indeed be named Nintendo New 3DS which is annoying, but we'd rather not name them Nintendo New Nintendo 3DS.

@sworddude there is no new 3ds game that works on the older 3ds systems none. however there are some 3ds games that have enhancements when played on a new 3ds like some  monster hunter games for example.

These two games do not run on a Nintendo 3DS:

They do run on a New Nintendo 3DS.
