My first RPGs were that first-person dungeon crawler style - I'm pretty sure The Bard's Tale on the C64 was the first RPG I ever played, and I was also a big fan of the early Might & Magic games.
BTW, that style isn't a Japanese style since those Western games were the ones that created it - Wizardry was the very first I believe. It heavily influenced games like Dragon Quest, and of course today the Japanese are just about the only ones still making games in that style so it's easy to think it was Japanese in origin, but nope.
