So what is the best game to start with?

The folks here talked me into Persona 3 FES, which is a great game so far. I have another friend who called me fail for not going with the PSP version, but honestly, I think I prefer seeing an original version of the game over the remake first anyway. Plus FES includes a second scenario to it that is a direct sequel to Persona 3, which I think isn't on the PSP version of the game.

The FES extras are NOT on the PSP version. The extra for the PSP is that you can play as a boy or girl protagonist and see how the social links change.

Is it possible to fail the game if you don't make it to the top of Tartarus by the end of the school year?

I can't quite remember, but I think I read somewhere that if you don't make it in time, the game might send you back in time or something to change how you managed your gametime.

But I'm not sure if I just made that up or what ;D

I'd go with P3FES as well, but perhaps that's also because it was the first Persona title I started with.

The first SMT title I played was Digital Devil Saga, which is also very excellent but has a diff mood for sure.

P4 is great, but I still think I love P3 more for the characters and story, and I think it'd be an easier transition into 3 than it would be into 4 for a new SMT gamer.

Not trying to skew your view of the games or try to convince you to go for one or the other, but I do know that most of my friends have loved 3 and 4 but hated 1 and 2.

I had a hard time getting into 1 but was enjoying 2 on the PSP.  It's definitely a different way of playing, but it's interesting to see how it evolved into P3.  I gave in and purchased Eternal Punishment from eBay and was pretty annoyed because they shipped it in crappy packaging and the case got slightly cracked.  Haven't played it yet, but all this talk makes me want to grab the CRT tv from my parents' house and play!

Well there is no turning back now. I had kept my original save, in case I decided starting over wasn't a good idea. For some reason my PS3 (console) wiped save slot 1 and now all that is left is my new 2h save.  This time through I am limiting myself to 2 trips to Tartarus a week though. Cause I noticed on the previous game I was ignoring my social skills. :\

Speaking of ignoring social skills...

Don't have a Vita, but that might not stop me from getting a copy of this eventually.

I DO have a Vita, and have been wanting a reason to, ya know, use it.

To be fair, The Answer was absolute garbage and I applaud Atlus for removing it from P3P.

Ha I never even got that far... Sad to admit I haven't finished any of them, but I'm not the sort who finishes games anyway.

Alright, So I loaded up Persona 3 Portable tonight, to compare it to what I've played of Persona 3 FES. So far, I don't like the cut scenes, or lack of. And navigating the Dorm is lame. It feels so... I dunno. Like a point and click adventure.

I hate to be a stick in the mud but I really want to see a Persona 5, not so much a rehash

I agree, Scott.  I really missed the intro scenes of the PS2 version... It feels like so much is left out of the remake.  I gotta get that CRT from my parents and get some real PS1and PS2 action going.

Anyone who claims this is the definitive version of the game is on crack. Just because you can control your entire group =\= better version overall. Now if they would have not messed with the presentation and only modified the game play, added the female/story. Then I would consider this a better version. Instead its a cut down version of the game, with some new features sprinkled on top to make Atlus a quick buck.

I'll be passing on any of the other PSP Persona versions in favor of the originals

P3P is the only one they really changed significantly though. All the others just fixed things and made them look better, though Persona 1 is still completely unplayable.
