Greatest games almost no one has played
« on: May 09, 2013, 10:33:58 pm »
Know a game that almost no one has played? It has to be great. It also has to be one that when mentioned, almost never gets recognized.

My game: Policenauts.

It is the spiritual successor to Snatcher. It is way more original than snatcher (I do love me some Blade Runner). It gets referenced repeatedly in Metal Gear Solid. It has a killer soundtrack. Fantastic art. And most importantly, for my money, it is Hideo Kojima's best work. Sadly, most gamers seem to not know about it.

What are some games that you know are gems that no one knows about.

Nice! Policenauts is fantastic, I dont think many North American gamers care about it simply cause it wasnt released here, but with the English patch that was released awhile back, I too agree more people should play it.
Mines a fairly new game...Killer 7, a Suda51 game that is great. It's kind of an FPS mixed with an on-rails shooter, add in Suda's touch and you've got a game unlike anything you've ever seen before. I think when people mention Grasshopper or Suda51, No More Heroes is usually what comes up first. I really like Killer 7 a lot more though.

Another overshadowed game is Alien Hominid, at least during it's release. It's a Metal Slug rip-off in the way it plays, but its got really neat levels and tons of challenge. I know there is an HD re-release but I still dont hear many people talk a whole lot about the game.

The King's Field series on PS1 & PS2. Well designed action-RPGs played from the first-person view that has a high emphasis on exploration and figuring things out on your own. The fact that it dropped you into this world without telling you nearly any direction to go on, and the slow-plodding gameplay turns off a lot of gamers. But the labyrinth-like dungeons, secrets galore, magic system, and large amounts of loot and armor and weapons to discover kept me hooked. It's like one of my favorite game series of all-time.

Dark Wizard on Sega CD. I know, it being on Sega CD is reason enough to roll your eyes and it's why so many people never heard of it. It's a tactical RPG most closely like Master of Monsters on the Genesis, where the grid is hexagonal and your leader summons monsters to do battle. You also can hire humans, dwarves, elves, and hobbits. Everything can change class, and depending on what their alignment is they can change into something different (a Lawful Mage promotes into something different than a Chaotic Mage). There's 4 different leaders to choose from, each with their own abilities and available monsters and alignments and special secret characters to recruit. Also the music is amazing.

Oh Damn! and I just got Dark Wizard on the sega CD I havent been able to sink a lot of time into it but it is pretty damn good!
Tempo for the 32X is awesome as well, typical 2D platformer but with some of the coolest backgrounds and effects i've ever seen

These are the exact reasons I wanted this thread topic. I've never really heard of Dark Wizard. Also, Tempo is amazing. I just heard of it and purchased it 1-2 months ago. But it is a great platformer. And Tempo Jr. on the Game Gear is one of the best on the system.

King's Field looks really interesting. I'll be checking those out. Thanks!

It's a bit tough for me to narrow it down to just a few games, but I've got to start somewhere.

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy (Xbox-PS2-Gamecube)
It's a shameless Zelda clone, but it's a good Zelda clone. It's set in some alternate universe where creatures from (an admittedly inaccurate portrayal of) Ancient Egyptian mythology roam free. You alternate between playing as an agile demigod named Sphinx and a young prince cursed with the form of a mummy who cannot die. Sphinx's levels are standard (if well done) 3D Zelda fare, while the prince's are more puzzle-based. The puzzles are actually quite unique and clever. Seeing as the mummy prince cannot die, he has to do all sorts of things to his body to complete puzzles (setting himself on fire, electrocuting himself, flattening himself, cutting himself into multiple pieces.) "Sphinx" has tight controls, an interesting plot, fun locales and some absolutely gorgeous graphics for the era. It also has a pretty kickass soundtrack. If you even think you're a fan of Middle Eastern-type music, I say to check it out. These are my personal favorite tracks:

Heliopolis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b19EuWmSW6U
Fire Mummy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tmCnEXCsIQ
Museum: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=me9LjAzzt4E

It had a rather cruel sequel hook, but it looks like a sequel will never happen. The game bombed. :'(

I also continue to defend my stance that the original "Siren" was among the best survival horror games ever made, if not the best. But I could talk about that all night, and I doubt you guys want to read the essay that is sure to come of it.

Also, Snatcher was all kinds of awesome. I've been wanting to play Policenauts for quite a while, but just never got around to it.

Silent Bomber (PS1)

Its an arcadey run and gunish action game with bombs rather than guns. Basically, you are a one man demolition team and have to infiltrate enemy bases and beat the boss at the end of each level. It feeds my shmup itch and it's really fun in it's own right.

Now Playing: Persona 5 Scramble, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Mario Kart 8

Metal Arms: Glitch in the System (PS2/GC/XBox)
Criminally overlooked game.  It compiles great ideas from other games into a fun and cohesive experience.   They keep switching  things up, so no part of the game ever gets strung out.  Voice acting is great and it's often hilarious.  Weapons are varied, creative and fun to use.  I would say it most closely resembles the Ratchet & Clank series, but in many ways surpasses it.

Honorable mentions:
Journey To Silius (NES) - A really solid run & gun game, with fantastic music and great graphics.
Board Game Top Shop (PS1) - It's like Monopoly, but more fun and with excessive amounts of Japanese weirdness.
Metal Storm (NES) - It's received recognition recently, sending the price skyrocketing.

MegaRace. To this day, I can mention this anywhere and people don't have a clue what it was and think of it in terms of a movie. This little jewel came out for SegaCD, 3DO and PC. The whole concept was a cutting edge template that racing games have mimicked ever since. The graphics itself was simply something you did not see in racing games, much less the concept of having a active pre-rendered environment. The developer Cryo got a chance to show the gaming world that 3D graphics in games was a very serious future to invest in. The music itself also raised the standard a bit for racing games and inspired future developers to actually invest in an actual publishable game soundtrack. Every person who followed my advice and played this game was able to see the influence it had at a technological level. It simply did what no one thought a graphic intensive racing game could do. Then of course on top of that, it was vehicular combat as well. Thus the traditional treatment of sprite technology had to be upgraded as well, to had more visible angles to the vehicles in the race environment.

Then as if this wasn't enough. 3D cards became a reality and once again Cryo saw to it that MegaRace 2 was just as cutting edge with all the previous treatments. The cars were now made of polygons of course. Unlike the competition, the wheel motion was not animated images on a polygon. The wheels actually turned and rolled in the 3D environment. The environments were not as active, but made up for it with a detail level unseen in games for almost another 6 years. Cryo fell in love with the reality of graphic cards that could support multi-layer textures and challenged themselves to revamp the engine to do this WITHOUT the aide of the card. For reasons no one knows, MegaRace 2 was PC exclusive and disappointed the core gaming audience whom were looking forward to grabbing their game controllers and experiencing more Lance Boyle infused lunacy.

Sadly MegaRace, like so many other pioneers became forgotten and thus Cryo felt the demand simply was not there. The closing of Mindscape nearly ended Cryo, had it not been for a new publisher by the name of The Adventure Company signing a contract and establishing a new standard for graphic adventure games. MegaRace 3 simply did not measure up to its old legacy as well. We have seen this happen many times when sequels come a little too late and people try a little too hard to make it work as great. Cryo themselves simply could not make the staff investment they had in the past, being adventure game specialists and superstars at this point. Thus the pioneering pre-rendered backgrounds was scrapped entirely as well as no co-host for Lance
Boyle. The only upside to MegaRace 3 was the publishing of it on PC and Playstation 2. At least in Europe anyway. The new publisher DreamCatcher was simply lacking the experience to market the game properly and was more focused on the adventure style games as well. One of the few saving graces of the game's entertainment value was Lance Boyle himself. Everything people expected of him, they got. The the soundtrack suffered, since the composers Knocking Boots Productions was the property of Mindscape and thus not present. Fortunately they didn't end up unemployed and their talent was adopted by Tommy Telarico Studios.
