General / Re: Consoles you had the most and least fun collecting for?
« on: October 25, 2021, 09:54:21 pm »
Favorite: Game Boy series (more so the original and Color games)

While a lot of the GB's library can be crap, their are still plenty of fun little bit sized games to be found and played that don't command Pokemon prices. While the GBA is one of my favorite consoles, I struggle way more finding games for that console that interest me; like 90% of the GBA games I run into are licensed games that I'm fairly sure aren't very good.

Least Favorite: WonderSwan

Language barrier is a hug issue with a majority of the games on this handheld for me thanks to a most of the library being RPGs or text heavy. At least it has a Picross game on it which I would like to get someday since I love nonograms.

I could also add the Game Gear to least favorite, but I'm super indifferent towards the console. If Sega ever made a Super Game Boy equivalent for the Genesis/Mega Drive so you could play Game Gear games on a TV, I'm sure I would be far more interested in playing games for the system. I'm a little surprised they didn't since Sega had the power base converter to play Master System games on the Genesis/Mega Drive and the Game Gear is more or less a Master System but with a slightly higher color pallet.

Classic Video Games / Re: Do you have a favorite Box art?
« on: October 07, 2021, 08:44:41 pm »
I always enjoyed the box art for Dragon Warrior II. While it's not Akira Toriyama's artwork, I can tell that whomever made the cover art was given samples of Toriyama's DQII art since the monsters and characters still resemble they're original versions pretty well (it's not Mega Man 1 or 2 box art levels of bad). I also really like the cover art for Dragon Warrior III and IV that were done by Chris Hopkins.

Modern Video Games / Re: What are your top 10 fav PS4 titles?
« on: October 03, 2021, 10:06:26 pm »

-Persona 5 Royal

-Undertale (Switch)
-Deltarune chapter 2 (Switch)
-XaviX Tennis (Xavix)
-Shanghai (Game Boy)
-Daedalian Opus (Game Boy)
-James Bond 007 (Game Boy)

-RetroDuo

I had the chance to get a Game & Watch game called Crab Grab this month but I passed on it. While it was priced stupidly great compared to what listings I saw online, I still couldn't justify spending that much for a single game. Was really cool to see though since I've never seen a Game & Watch before.

I didn't know the Blaster Master Zero games got an all in one release in Asia. That would have been super nice to know earlier this year before I pre-ordered Zero 3 on LRG. Would've been $30 cheaper than getting all three games on LRG and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have to wait like 9 months for the game to arrive.

-Mega Man 11 game informer
-interact Super Pad 64 Plus

-Game Boy Link Cable

-Super Adventure Rockman (PS1)

-Dragon Quest V (PS2)
-Sonic CD (PC)
-Picross e9 (3DS)
-Picross 2 (3DS VC)
-Balloon Fight GB (3DS VC)

General / Re: Months with Too Many Releases?
« on: August 24, 2021, 09:40:18 pm »
I've never heard of F.I.S.T but it looks like fun.

Their are quite a few games coming out next month and October I'm looking forward to like Sonic Colors, WarioWare, Eastward, Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania, and Metroid 5, but I'm not sure when I'll be getting/playing them since I've been really focusing on playing Dragon Quest games this year with only little side tangents into other games like Rift Apart, No Straight Roads, and various retro games. Might as well save some money and get them when I have the time to actually PLAY them instead of getting them day 1 or maybe I'll just wait for a sale.

Game Boy Color
Replaced the speaker
Replaced a fuse

WonderSwan
Replaced the polarizer film

Super Nintendo & Nintendo 64
Removed the plastic tabs by the cart slot to play Super Famicom games

PS One & Sega Genesis 2
Reflowed solder around area where the power jack plugs into to fix a short/no power issue

Sega CD 2
Replaced voltage regulator. Laser is still broken, but now powers on.

NES
Replaced 72 pin connector with Blinking Light Win, then with another regular 72 pin connector since the BLW stopped working.
Replaced power/reset buttons due to the previous power button having a short.

I have an Xbox and Game Gear I could fix, but I'm not very motivated to fix them. Both consoles have capacitor issues. Not too long ago I purchased a non functioning pink GB Pocket from Japan to try to fix it as a fun activity, but I couldn't find what was causing the handheld not to power on. Wasn't a total loss though since I swapped shells with my ugly metallic blue GB Pocket so I now have a nice pink GB Pocket and the screen and buttons on the non-functioning Pocket also work fine.

Sounds like a fun idea for a series. I'm surprised how high up MM9 Wily stage 3 and Shovel Knight's flying machine level were on that list.

86
Assassin's Creed (PS3)
Crash Twinsanity (PS2)
Monkey Magic (PS1)
Aero the Acro-Bat (SNES)
Aero the Acro-Bat 2 (SNES)
Mega Man Xtreme 2 (3DS VC)

Zelda & Loftwing amiibo
Cosmic Red PS5 controller
TI-99/4A Speech Synthesizer
Caped Mario Hallmark Ornament
Donkey Kong Mario Kart Hallmark Ornament
SNES console Hallmark Ornament
MMX and Zero Tamashii Buddies figures

I was hoping to get Fuga: Melodies of Steel since I've been looking forward to that game for a few years now, but it sounds like the PS4 and PS5 versions got removed due to a pricing error. The $39.99 game was mispriced at $57.13 which is a really random price. I know I can get it on Switch, but I'd prefer to have the PS5 version just to have another game for the system. I can wait a bit longer though; been so busy with the Dragon Quest series this year, that I haven't really been buying or playing many new games.

Got a PS5 today for $1.88. Thanks to my employee discount being doubled this week and the fact that the president of the company where I work gave everyone a ton of Achivers points last year during Covid as a thank you, which I turned into gift cards, it brought the price way down. Only game I have for it right now (and probably for a LONG while) is the new Ratchet & Clank.

My other pick-ups this month were:

-Logitech wireless PS2 controller
-Rockman X3 (PS1)
-Rockman Complete Works (PS1)
-Rockman Complete Works 5 (PS1)
-Japanese PS2 Slim
-PS1 Pocket Station
-Non-functioning pink Game Boy Pocket
-Zelda II (Disk System)
-Lavender Game Boy Micro
-Mega Man Xtreme (3DS)
-Mega Man Xtreme 2 (3DS)

-Sonic the Hedgehog The IDW Collection

Well...my save file disappeared...even though the battery I replaced like five days ago is still working since it now has a new file 1 which starts me at the intro stage. Maybe the save file somehow got corrupted? Regardless, I'll just be keeping the game I waited 9 or so months for in its box where it seems it'll be destined to be in for the foreseeable future and if I ever get the urge to replay the game, I will just go with the 3DS virtual console release.

With that, I'm just going to re-focus my time finishing up Dragon Warrior VII and afterwards play something else before continuing on with playing all of the main games in the DQ series this year.

Wow, that's tantamount to incompetence. They charged a beggarly $44.99 for the game, so I'm guessing they were hoping nobody would actually open and play it. I mean, who actually does that in this day and age, right?

Seeing the listings on ebay for the LRG re-release of the game, I wouldn't be surprised. Coulda left my copy unopened and tried to sell the game for like $200. :P

Damm

That being said why didn't they use flash memory like they did with gba carts. Considering it's a modern era retro game surely you don't want to copy the lesser things of being accurate to og gameboy color games :o

Some GBA games still use a battery to keep save data like Wario Land 4. I'm not sure why flash memory wasn't used. I can't imagine it'd be that much cheaper to use a battery. Maybe no one has made a Game Boy PCB that has connections for flash? Or maybe flash memory isn't possible on older Game Boy consoles? I'm just pulling possible reasons out of my butt. At least replacing these little batteries isn't terribly difficult, just frustrating to do when the thing dies so quickly or in this case, arrives dead on arrival rather than last for like twenty years.
